I've been on both sides. In my teens, I was 5'7" at a buck forty and was called the Ethiopian body builder and shit but I didn't mind.
I was at 5'8" at 215 pounds in my late 20's being called the normal things you hear others say to overweight people and it kinda upset me.
Maybe cause it's alot easier to get chics when you're thin and it's much harder to loose weight rather than gaining it.

I wasn't aware it was an issue. But if it is perhaps its because its easier to put on weight rather than lose it so there's an element of pity for overweight people but a sense that underweight people can change it.
Dunno, just a spur of the moment theory.

My theory
Because models and celebrities are underweight making it seem glamorous, stylish and desired to be so; so being underweight is enviable to such a degree that it is empirically understood that most people want to be too thin. Then an admiration for bodies that jiggle is regarded as sassy and defiant towards the prevailing fashion. It's always been more socially acceptable for the poor and underprivelidged to make fun of the rich and privelidged. The skinny are seen as blessed, and as compensation for not being skinny, others get to make fun of them for it. While overeating is abusive to one's body in an antagonistic way, looking underweight appears abusive to the body in a neglectful way - so maybe people think bringing attention to food in the skinny person's presence will encourage them to pay more attention - and it would make things worse for the heavy person. Skinny people are not seen as lacking in self confidence so people don't worry about offending them.

you see, I hate how fat people complain. or give excuse. funkin annoys me.
I'm fat. That is because more goes in me than come out the other end. I've always been fat. I eat shit, when I don't eat as much and I exercise more i lose weight. I don't care if anyone calls me fat. I'm fit and healthy I know that. I think I could beat most average skinny people in most exercise trials. Like a beep test or something. I'd welcome the challange. But I don't mind being called fat. I know I am, I need reminding before I stuff something else down my throat cus I'm closer to a heart attack than the next person probably - I've go more weight for my heart to support.
People are too touchy about themselves. Who cares if you ain't perfect. Who is? Not everyone in everyones eyes and those that discriminate against someone because of whatever they look like ain't gonna have any friends in the end.
People have seriously gotta get over their own egos and accept people are different. I wish more people would make more fun of fat people then I would get stuff like to other fat people 'oh, do you think it's your glands'
- 'yes, yes that must be it, it's my glands why I'm fat'. I knew it wasn't sitting in my 4x4 driving to McDonalds ordering a 4 burgers and a milkshake everyday. Milkshake must be good for me'.
People should say: "Why are you fat, tubby?"
- "I'm big boned"
"No you're fat, why? Do you have a medical condition or do you eat too much"
Seriously, most fat people need a rocket up their arse and telling they are fat, otherwise they'll hind behind discrimination bullshit until they die of a heart attack.

skinny is considered healthy, while obesity is not.
our society is taught to (in a variety of ways) pity and look out for the sickly, while we jealously poke fun of the fit and nimble.

Whatever, Q. Kiss my ass, you DJ Qualls-looking muhfucka.
I agree with your piont about society being taught to look out for the sickly, though.
That was excellent. My own theory is kinda similar, only not as well thought out. And I don't spell priveleged that way. But now I'm just nitpicking. Ho ho ho.
See though, not all thin people are proud of being underweight and associate it with looking like models and celebrities, obviously. They're not all needing to be knocked down a peg or anything. I just don't like the double standards. I see it so often in my everyday life. And on this board too. You people disgust me.

As children we learn from fairy tales that the good people are usually chubby or at least curvy, and the evil people are usually skin and bones. This is not always the case, but fat often suggests joviality and harmlessness while stick-like figures suggest a lack of sensual enjoyment. So maybe the perceptions lead to thinking like this; Every good and fun loving and healthy person should enjoy food, so how can you blame people for enjoying it too much? But a person who doesn't eat much is suspect and unhealthy and needs to be jostled out of that state of mind with tough love.
Disney Movies - the young are healthy and thin but the adults are either good and fat or evil and thin
Sleeping Beauty - the royal family is slender but they look healthy and Briar Rose/Aurora is young so her svelt figure appears to be the result of scampering through the forest barefoot fearless of tapeworm, lyme disease, and chiggers. The three fairies are rolly polly while Maleficent is skeletal.
Aladdin - The Sultan is fat, Jaffar is thin.
Cinderella - Lanky evil stepsisters and stepmother, chubby king and fairy godmother.
Beauty and The Beast - Belle's father is fat, The Beast is just big boned, and Gaston is in shape because he's vain.
The Little Mermaid - Okay, this one isn't so much in line with what I'm saying.

Overweight means you have too much fat, too much fat is not healthy. Being fit means being in shape with a reasonable body fat ratio.

Haven't you also noticed the trend in Disney movies of short stumpy fat fathers? All little Santa Clauses, and the princess leans down to peck him on the cheek (she's so tall and leggy she must take after her absent mother) before going off with the tall handsome prince. Maybe he's that way so he doesn't compete in sex appeal with the prince, to refer to some kind of Electra complex there.

A quick point about "BMI" or "Body Mass Index". When I played basketball at college, the team got a big kick out of my BMI. I was 6'1" and weighed 224lbs. However, my body fat was @ 9%. So, I was not fat, but yet according this scale not only was I fat, I was obese. So yeah, I heard plenty of fat jokes, but when I'd throw those skinny fuckers around, it was pretty cool to be "Big'n". So, I don't go by what so made up chart says about me, blood-pressure and stuff sure, but some quack's idea of healthy, nope.
Then you weren't fat if your BMI was 9%.
You earlier said that you were fat AND healthy and fit.
Do you not see what I'm saying?
I'm really confused by what you're saying here, The BMI scale told you that you were obese because you had a 9% body fat ratio at your weight and height? When I say overweight I mean fat, not just heavy. A big muscley guy is heavy but I wouldn't call him overweight. You called yourself fat. Well, are you or aren't you fat?

The "BMI" chart said that if my height was 6'1" my weight should be 180lbs. If you were more than 40lbs. overweight you were considered obese, according this chart. Hopefully they have modified this since 1991 to take in account muscle-mass, but back then it was a height to weight ratio formula. No, I didn't think I was fat, nor did my teammates, it was just good natured ribbing.
That doesn't change what I said earlier about how you can't be fat and fit and healthy at the same time.

I would have to agree with Nuzz along the lines of, skinny people are assumed to be okay with self-esteem while overweight people aren't, and therefore it's firing season on skinnies.
I have experienced it all myself, my self esteem has taken a gigantic hit ever since I put on weight my freshman year that I haven't since been able to take off. Is it anybody elses fault? No. It's completely mine. But it's been a very hard experience, and I don't blame anyone else for it, but it's still hard to deal with. I constantly think that if I just "lose weight" everything will be okay, and then I find myself eating total crap and telling myself that I should go excercise. So yeah, personally, I'm on the offense when it comes to this kind of thing. I mean, I'm not a whale or anything, and I can joke about it, but when someone asks you if you are pregnant, and you say no, and then they say "oh you need to los that stomach!", it's kinda hard not to be hurt.

I never said you could be overweight and fit and healthy. I said you could weigh a lot, and be fit and healthy. I assumed that my use of the word "overweight" would not be taken to simply mean weighing a lot, but would be taken to mean weighing too much because of an excess of fat. The prefix "over" itself suggesting an unhealthy excess. And "fit" means in shape, right? Like in good shape, enough muscle tone and low body fat percentage. I guess you're right, I would be a terrible speech writer because a good speech writer would consider her audience and I obviously expected too much from you. I shouldn't be so presumptuous to assume you would interpret words the same way that I do.

Media standards say she's fat? I thought she was muscular and thick...accordinG to the media. Of course, black women are allowed to have a little more body fat because they're more basely sexualized in the media than most white actresses.

Oh, one more thing. I DO blame some of my issue on "society" or whatever the hell you want to say, because of the standard women are supposed to reach nowadays. I'm a little chubby, it's true, but overall it's pretty much in proportion and okay. The only reason I feel like I'm not good enough is because so many guys are just used to girls who are very skinny and have near-perfect bodies, and in comparison to them, I certainly feel like a big blob. Yeah. I had more to say about this but I'm sick of talking about it.

People have made fun of me and given me a hard time about having pale skin. They tell me I need to get a tan. Going by the logic of why people feel okay making fun of thin people, you'd think that if tan is the ideal, then people would make fun of the too-tan people and tell them to stay out of the sun. But I never hear people saying that. Instead I hear compliments on their tans.

How come it is PC for a black woman to have more body fat than a white woman?
Signed,
mickill
signed mickill? Okay, how did you throw your voice like that? Or, your message rather?
It's more PC because black women are seen by society as possessing a more earthly sexuality. White women are supposed to be pristine and fragile but a black woman is supposed to have voluptuous curves and exaggerated sexuality in her form. It's like, her body is allowed to be oggled and made into something purely sexual, and the darker her skin is, the more men want to look at her as a sexual object. White women, men want to see skinny in order to respect them. I think there's a gradation of respect that goes hand in hand with sexual desire that travels correspondingly along the range of skin color, from high respect, idealism with thin body, light skin and blonde hair, down to no respect and base sexual urges with dark black skin and heavy curves.

Goth.
I'm the palest. Near fluorescent.
It's a bitch when you spend most summers in Italy. I try to stay out of the sun because even when my skin doesn't become all itchy I just burrrrrn.
It's especially obvious because most people in southern Italy are bronzed if not basically black in the summer.
Meh.

you don't hear people with overly tan skin getting made fun of? oompa-loompa? carrot?
it's true, i don't hear it as much, but i do hear it. there is such a thing as too tan.
i really wasn't aware that it actually was politically incorrect to make fun of fat people. well i mean, maybe it is, but no more technically politically incorrect to make fun of people with eating disorders. people still do both, though.

on the topic of overweight and healty. Bodybuilders. They exceed their height and weight requirements.
Typical cases in the army are some of the most fit people get either flagged which means they get no promotion and no increase of pay till they can meet the height and weight requirements.
What's fucked up about the way they check you if you happen to be overweight on the scales, they tape your body and if your neck is thick, then you're good to go.
I've seen cases where a really fat dude meets the height and weight requirements because he's got a really huge neck and I've seen muscular people fail because their neck isn't big.

i hate that, when you're self conscious about something, and you admit that you're said something, and people go "no! you are not! shut up!" that just makes me feel worse. if i really wasn't ugly, then you would have just laughed when i said i was ugly, you wouldn't have gone all "no, you aren't ugly, shut up", etc

I feel sorry for the person that said fat is a choice, because that's pretty ignorant. There is a great deal of people who overeat by choice, but it's not a black and white situation of "If you're fat, it's your own fault," because it's not that simple. Ever known someone who eats and eats and eats and NEVER gains weight? It works the other way too. I know someone with Chrohn's disease right now, who's on steroids and it makes her gain weight like no other.
I gained weight when I wasn't getting enough iron in my diet - my hemoglobin went down, my metabolism shot way down, I didn't have enough oxygen in my blood or going to my brain, I was always tired and sluggish. Does that mean I chose that? No, my body did. I ate as I always had, but I was unaware when I was 13 that the amount of blood lost during menstral cycles wouldn't be replenished as easy or as well as it should.
Sure, I do have the friends that eat fast food everyday and complain that "they gain weight if they eat just a carrot," which is a bunch of shit, because they ain't eatin' carrots, and I'm pretty sure if they did, they'd lose weight. They can go fuck themselves. But I have known many situations where gaining weight isn't their choice. They don't deserve torment. Hell, no one deserves torment. But people in this society are a bunch of uncaring, unsympathetic bastards and see it as "If you're fat then fuck you, that's your problem" though I'm pretty sure somewhere along the line they've been friends with or have been related to someone struggling with their weight.
And I know for a fact it hurts my brother when people make fun of him for being skinny. He doesn't really have girlfriends, and when I asked girls that are friends with him "Why not my brother?" "Oh, um. He's really small. I feel fat in comparison." He's 5'11 and 140 pounds, and all of that is muscle which means he's pretty small and has next to no fat. It's rough for him, too.

i didn't know that lack of iron can make you put on weight.
It can if it affects your metabolism. The lack of oxygen in direct result from lack of iron made me sluggish and my metabolism plummetted. (n)

Yeah they do. They go there to eat healthy, meet people like them, and exercise. They work until they go home to their old habit.
