the dictionary just says christmas time - after new year, but the google link faz puts there seems to relate mostly to winter solstice.

so my question is, does the southern hemisphere have no yule, or should we celebrate it in june?

hmm?

All I can think of is my friend's uncle's cat, which makes this sound when it throws up:

"Yul, yul, yul, yul, YUL, YUL, YUL - *barf*

which for some reason we made into

Yul, yul, yul, yul, YUL, YUL, YUL - footini (jawa yell) - then the sound of an explosion....

Christmas in Swedish (and in other Scandinavian languages as well, except Finnish) is jul, which is pronounced the same way as yule, so I guess it's something that the vikings brought to the great continent in the west.

Why is Finnish different? Does it have to do with the Vikings staying out of Finland during their crazy rampages during the 9th 10th and 11th centuries?

Actually Finland isn't even counted as Scandinavian countries, it belongs to Fenno-Scandia. I think it has more geographical reasons, and the original Finns arrived from around the Ural mountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenno-Ugric) in Russia, the people from there went for a walkabout and divided between Finland, Estonia and Hungary. You can hear loads of similarities in those languages, Estonians and Finns understand each other just as much as Swedes, Danes and Norwegians.
