When I listen to this,
I picture the Beastie Boys in the locker room getting pumped up before a B-Ball game or something.

I really like it. Very basic, but very effective. Nice cuts too.

Hot!

Sorry for being stupid but by "cuts" do you mean samples or something else  ?

Well, generally, cuts means scratching. So a single cut would be one "wicky" sound. I guess it could mean the samples too, just as long as there's scratching taking place.

Cheers - I only use CDJ's so scratching isnt somethin i know too much about - i thought cuts might be another term for loop. So if your scratching a sample and then let it play e.g 3 MC's and one DJ (mixmaster mike video version) is that still "cutting"?

Oh man! That is the epitomy of cuttin' and scratchin'!!!

Actually cutting refers to cutting the record out and then back in with the cross-fader or the transformer knobs (transformer scratches are old school and really cool)!

Out!

Cheers, I should have known all that really considering how long I have been listening to beasties and other stuff but I obvioously havent being paying attention! Since joining this forum a few weeks ago I have learnt loads about making music, about other music and about the beastie boys. :)

the bass sounds horrible and percussion sounds plastic, and the second verse enters 4 beats early. scratching was cool though.

Yeah. The bass was even muddier than that, if you believe it, and I didn't feel like EQing and tweaking. The percussion is a sample from a old jazz record, and I didn't want to tamper with the actual LP sound.

As for the early start, there are significant change-ups in the Beastie Boys' style, and they do not play to normal 4 bar standards; Overlapping and early starting is one of their trademarks, and I wanted to make sure the listeners noticed the sudden change.

Thanks for all the replies and feedback, and what seemed to be a.... debate about sampling/djing. The scratches were, in fact, samples that I placed - so, no, I did not spin the overlays myself.

This was actually my first remix, though.

Yeah my hip hop knowledge is sadly lacking but its getting better, as for your mix as i said i liked it, I've only done two mixes myself and am still learning. You just gotta keep tryin and gettin ideas/tips from this forum, i've had loads of help from the people on here :)

the second verse enters 4 beats early.

I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that. As long as it syncs with the music, it don't matter if the vocals are pushed back or forth a few beats. Whatever the remixor feels is appropriate.

However, I'm a little disapointed that the scratching is a sample.

i think this one is better than the original, so yes i like it. (y)

the bass could have been a little bit louder though, but the samples are pretty good!
