View Full Version : Best opening to a song

Whats the best opening few seconds to a song that you can think of. I'm talking about something that just hooks you in instantly. I'm not talking about long intros that build up the tension ala most of new orders intros. Something that you just go bang and you know what that song is instantly.
A few for me include:
Hot Hot Heat - Island of the Honest man
Bodyjar - Hazy Shade of winter
Dogs Die in hot cars - Godhopping
QOTSA - No one knows
AC/DC - Back in black
Weezer - Buddy Holly
Le Tigre - Deceptacon
LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is playing at my house
Bravery - Honest Mistake
Dallas Crane - Sit on my knee
The Datsuns - Motherfucker from hell
Theres alot that I haven't listed, just kinda brainstorming. I think for every band I like theres an intro to one of their songs that just captures my attention. Feel free to throw in a few songs where you only listen to the intros. God knows I skip alot of "Island of the honest man", it would be a pretty shitty song if it wasnt for that totally awesome intro. But when I say intro, and I know I'm repeating myself, I don't mean ultra long intros ala enter sandman, stairway to heaven etc etc...
weezer - island in the sun
not even close to their best, but I know exactly what song it is when I hear that intro. Now that I think of it, Weezer has a lot of songs like that.

Ooh, good topic. As I said in that other thread, it's what most of the singles I love have in common. (I'm also a sucker for handclapping and gimmicks of any kind.)
I can't name any now, but you guys already got some of them. (You're right about Weezer--you always know it's one of their songs. And the Le Tigre song is a classic opener.)
I hate songs that limp in and you can't tell what the song is until you're heard 20 seconds.
Okay, I'm naming My Best Friend's Girl by The Cars. Or pretty much any Cars song. I don't even like The Cars.

Seek and Destroy -- (dont need to say anything..)

Yeah I meant to list you as my inspiration for doing this thread but I forgot. Nice songs everyone, but I was thinking intros that are generally a little more explosive (y) "You really got me" is an excellent one as an example. "Sweet Child o' mine" and "gimme shelter"....hmm not really explosive but very recognisable. If we're going by straight up recognisable, "Flashlight" by Parliament is up there, as with "Who am I (whats my name)?" by snoop. But as far as explosive, i still think that "Island of the honest man" wins (y) Alot of hives songs come close though. Particularly "see through head" (y)

^I said "generally". Whilst "T.V eye" is definitely explosive, the other one you listed, "Teenage Riot" is far from explosive...but yeah T.V eye is the sorta thing I'm thinking.

I'm surprised no one has mention Led Zeppelin yet. So many awesome openings. I'll give the band some props....
Just a few great openings by Zep are...
Immigrant Song
When the Levy Breaks
Celebration Day (kicks ass on all choices I've read so far)
And my all time favorite, the opening that Kicks the Door Down,
Heartbreaker!
Led Zeppelin were always very fucking serious about the start of a song.

Doesn't Buddy Holly not have an instrumental intro? I haven't heard it in awhile but I thought it just started right in with the lyrics.
Intros I just like:
Cannonball - Breeders
Groove is in the Heart - Deee-lite
What's Golden - Jurassic 5
Learning to Fly - Pink Floyd
These ones might be more the "explosive" type:
Even Better than the Real Thing - U2
Let Forever Be - Chemical Brothers
Thunderstruck/Back in Black - AC/DC
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Precious Things - Tori Amos
Barrel of a Gun - Guster
Baba O'Riley - The Who (I know it's already been mentioned, but it's worth reiterating (y) )
Alive - Pearl Jam

Uh, calm down, or something. Just a freakin question, jeez.
Also, you used the word "intros" about seven times in your first post, so pardon the confusion.
And I don't personally think an intro has to be "explosive" to be really good or the best. I am a Weezer fan but don't think BH is a more relevant choice than any of mine.
And calling me a doofus was mean. :(
