i have had this theory for sometime.. my friends claim to have it too, but w/e...

ok so you look at a color you say green. we all say green. but what if just what if... we all saw something different? we call it green and it could be joe over there's blue to him. you know? . how will we ever find out? i doubt we could, if this is true o' course

why the hell is it that whenever someone actually gives any deep thought to something that we generally take for granted, people's first response is "oh ok DUUUUDE, interesting theory BRO, lay off the drugs for a while ok BUD"

jesus man, you don't need crack to think about these kinds of things

i used to think about this too. i'd ask my friends how they could describe a color, say, blue, and they'd say "oh, well, you know, it's blue, the color of the sky", but that all presupposes that you know what blue looks like, and really, you're not defining anything because you're using the word in the definition. so i'd say "ok, but how would you describe a color to someone who's never seen it before? how would you describe it to a colorblind person, who has no idea of what the color blue looks like?" and they'd say "i don't know, shut up"

whenever you ask a question without an answer, people accuse you of being a pothead, it sucks

No not crack but a lot of deep thinkin is done on weed...especially the theory posed in this thread.

Of course not, but considering the fact that every single person I've ever met in my life calls this colour green suggests to me that it is in fact the same colour in each case - "green"; the name given to it by the person responsible for naming the colour. If one person thought that blue were green for instance, I think he'd be corrected instantly by 99% of people he bumped into when he tried to force his crackhead theory upon them.

without using the color or a reference to any object that shares the color, can you describe to me the color green? what do you see when you see green?

basically what i'm getting at is this: we have no ability to see things from another person's perspective, we spend our lives seeing only what we see, as obvious as that sounds. for my entire life, grass looks like this . but perhaps if i were to transplant my consciousness into your body somehow, grass might look like this. we both call it green, because that's what we're taught. indeed, this color that we see is called green, that's pretty obvious there. but perhaps what i see and what you see are two different things; we'd never know, because nobody can tell you what green IS, you just see it and then attach the label to it.

supposing somebody had a disease that caused them to see every color as its inverse. we'd never know, because he'd never know anything was wrong. you show him a picture of grass and say the grass is green, and he'd agree, yes that's green. but he's seeing what we'd commonly define as black, or yellow, or whatever the hell the inverse of green is.

we all agree on what green is, but we don't have any way of knowing that we're all seeing the same exact thing. we probably are, but IF, and that's the important word, IF, we weren't, we wouldn't know

Wait, I just had a thought...

Suppose you said, "what colour is a fire engine?" and to use the font colours to show you.

I might type red
You might type red
Jackrock might type red
Loppfessor might type red because he has dog vision.

Then we'd know something was wrong because we'd all be showing the colour we see when we say that word, and Lopp would be the odd one out, non?

Loppfessor
12-07-2005, 10:33 PM

whatever man, you're talkin crazy talk...<scratches behind ear with toes> Oh shit!...umm I gotta go

Bob
12-07-2005, 10:37 PM
no, because fire engines are objectively painted red. if a fire engine is red, that's the only color it's ever going to be. normal red may look like this, and dog vision red may look like this, but whatever we think red LOOKS like, the fire engine is still that color. so if he's "mistaken" about what red looks like on the fire engine, he's going to be mistaken about what red looks like on the font colors too. he's going to pick the color that corresponds to the color he sees on the fire engine, and he's going to call it red, because to him, that's what red is. our red and his red may look different depending on our individual perceptions, but it's still the same color, and it's still called red, and all red things will appear to be that color.

i know that doesn't make a ton of sense in writing, but it's the best explanation i can give at the moment...if i think of a better one i'll keep you posted

I know exactly what you're getting at here, but personally I think we are all experiencing the same thing. Biologically we are all wired up pretty much the same. It would probably be impossible to see in "inverted vision" because of the way the light interacts with your eye. We'd all experience white as the same thing, and since white is a mixture of all the colours, I'm pretty sure we're all seeing the same colour.

Yeah, I've thought about that before. How would we explain to a blind person what blue looks like. I remember reading an article on that before, very interesting. (y) You'd have to somehow find the perfect adjetives to describe blue, like how's it feel, taste, sound, and smell so they can get a picture in their head on what it looks like. Since they are blind, it makes all of their other senses stronger I heard.

i had some psychology or philosophy class in university where some acedemic argued having this exact thought was an indication of reaching some level of something or another...i guess its that common of a thought...i've had it!

I really believe that some people see colours differently. The actual colours are the same though casue they're just photons emited at a constant wavelength based on upon the energy released when the excited electron from the inital collison jumps down a few energy states ....but everyone's receptors may take that photon and process it different..who knows...

Let's get us some fresh eyeballs and hookem up to a LightBright and see what we can figure out!

For real man...if you've never seen Mask go rent it. Cher plays a real tramp in it too and I think she may have one an award for it. Anyway all your questions will be answered
