I know the music that's all big right now is rap but that was already started, I feel like we need a new genre of music or something.

With the exception of the 60's, when people seemed to be much more aware that the things around them were really changing and that a new era was dawning, I think most generations didn't feel there was anything special about their time period while they were experiencing it. It's generally when we look back at an era and look at the whole picture, do we say "ah, those were the good old days."
