 Did anyone see this report by the BBC that the MPA (Music Publisher Association) will begin a campaign against websites offering tabs and lyrics. This is complete bullcrap. These people are hampering the growth and spread of music in my mind. I go online all the time and look up lyrics and guitar tabs. This goes to show you companies never care about the consumer there care only about themselves. All ways looking to screw people. (n)

Anyone else care about this or am i all alone, outraged?

i think that idea is retarded. i look up lyrics a lot, whether it's just to see a clever rhyme, or to find a song. i'm not too worried at the moment about it, though, because it will take time, and even then, the governments have to agree to implement it.

i like it when the lyrics are written inside the cd cover (y)

so i don't have to bother going online to get 'em

but if what you say is true then i guess i don't have a choice

I kinda see where they're coming from on the guitar tabs stuff, but lyrics sites? Good God. Not every CD features the lyrics to the songs. How are we supposed to know what they're singing about?

It's fucking stupid. How is "by ear" transcription illegal? If I draw a picture of a building from an image in my head am I infringing on the architect's copyright?

Any transcription on these websites is always done through an individual's hearing and 9 times out of 10 is innacurate. People who post tabs aren't trying to post the copyrighted music, they're giving their own interpretation of it, to try and help fellow musicians learn to play.

The Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents US sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006.

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed.

He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal".

Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective".

These fat-cats are going to stifle the creativity of young musicians worldwide. All they care about is the money they can make off tab books, and not the musicians we could see in 10 times time (or not see as the case may be). Well, I for one will refuse to buy any more if they go ahead with this. One of the best ways to learn an instrument is through tablature, and taking away access to unofficial tabs is diabolical. How many people can afford to run out and buy tab books for all their favourite bands? How many people's favourite bands actually have tab books released anyway?

If there was actually a readily available source for every song ever recorded where any song tab was available for download at a small cost then I'd have no complaint, but there isn't, and censoring all songs for which the majority have no official tab makes me sick.

yeah no shit. Downloading MP3s without paying for them and exposing yourself to people are against the law too but thats not stopping me!!!
