I'll start.

I hate Jedi Mind Tricks, for rapping about beating up gay people and anyone who isn't muslim or something.

I also hate AFI and other fake-underground rock bands on major labels who use the excuse of not being on MTV for being indie and better when they're not.

I don't like AFI or anything, but there's a lot of "indie" or "underground" bands who have gone on to major labels. Your point?

I think he means pretending to be indie due to indifference that greets them, as opposed to being labelled 'indie' by music journalists and T.V stations.

Some of my favorites like Modest Mouse and Death Cab For Cutie have gone on major labels, and I never stopped liking them.

I really hated 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News'. That's the only reason why they were known in the mainstream. My favorite album by them was 'The Moon & Antarctica'. Death Cab For Cutie's 'Plans' wasn't bad.

Fall Out Boy. "Sugar We're Going Down" is a decent enough song, but their new song sucks. Plus they clearly spend more time focusing on their make-up, clothing, and oh so punk rawk choreography than on the fucking music.

I think it's stupid/ignorant to write off an entire genre of music.

I just hate all shit music. But I can appreciate good music from any genre, whether it be gangsta rap, country, metal, punk, whatever. I like to think I can listen to any new band with no prejudices or preconceptions and respect them for what they are. (y)

Very true. Having said that, some genres are EASILY better than others (e.g. I don't think I've met a single "new age" band I've liked, but I suppose it's possible there's one artist that doesn't suck) and we all have our preferences and biases, no matter how eclectic anyone claims to be.

Yeah. Emo died a slow painful death a few years ago.

I just wish I could play people some Jawbreaker or Sunny Day Real Estate or Embrace, etc. everytime someone goes "Oh, emo is so lame." That would shut them up and they'd realize emo isn't supposed to be tripe like The Used.

Id say im pretty tolerant when it comes to music, and theres alot of stuff from alot of very different genres that i love.
But theres that little group containing Athlete, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Radiohead....It grates on my mind. They're so miserable and tuneless. Some of coldplay's ok, but its often so overplayed that i end up hating it anyway.

fuck i hate all the recent emo stuff like the used. it's just corportate punk (gay gay gay gay GAY. punk rock is dead get over it) with screaming in it. what do those other emo bands sound like droppin'?

i also hate any kind of rock that noodles through the whole song like joe satriani. it just has no substance. Any grunge other than nirvana. they're all unoriginal nirvana wannabes. Everything in the mainstream is shithouse these days cause the corporations have a stranglehold over it.

I had more but forgot it

It's hard to pinpoint the "sound" of the "true" emo bands (the ones from the '80s and '90s) because they were actually varied in and of itself. But they're definitely not even close to stuff like The Used. What we're seeing now is a lot more screamo and violent imagery (that whole "you're stabbing my heart" whiney stuff) and it's all sounding the same and indistinguishable, quite frankly.

Essentially what was originally emo was that it was an offshoot of the '80s DC hardcore scene where they decided to mix in a bit of melody and sensitivity into their brand of hardcore punk.

In the '90s, emo was a lot closer to indie rock at the time, and sometimes it'd allow itself to be more on the poppy side (and Weezer was a definite influence on emo, specifically the "Pinkerton" album).

When I think of emo (and I mean, the good kind), I usually point to Jimmy Eat World, Jawbreaker or The Promise Ring as what I'm into when it comes to this sort of thing. And Jimmy is one of the few good bands to still be together. And they're certainly now an odd fit if you look at the context of what we think of as emo today.

But whatever, the label is kind of silly to begin with. But good music has come from that scene.
