1999
Police organizations across the country call for the cancellation of a sold-out concert scheduled for New Jersey's Continental Arena. The concert, featuring headliners Rage Against The Machine, the Beastie Boys, and Bad Religion, is a fundraiser for death-row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal.
In August, the national Fraternal Order of Police announces a mass boycott against musical artists who support a new trial for death-row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal. The group specifically targets Rage Against The Machine and the Beastie Boys, but plans to keep an updated list on its website once it has compiled a list of all the musicians who support Abu-Jamal.
Also in 1987 any concert the Beasties where perfoming at tickets had to be typed to say "Adults only" Do you agree or disagree?
I'm still doing some research on censorship for my class and I was just wondering what is up with Abu-Jamal and why was some people pissed at the Beasites for supporting him?
Plus if anyone would like to write there name, where they live, and if your for or against censorship and why its greatly appreciated. Thanx ;)

I'm Paddy, I live in London, and I'm against censorship. People are intelligent enough to decide what offends them, they should be allowed to make the choice themselves.

In the past, RobMoney posted this link (http://www.danielfaulkner.com/index.html) and it has information about the Mumia case from the viewpoint of the prosecution. You can google mumia and you'll easily find his website for the other side. RobMoney's link has actual court documents and decisions, or links to them (if I'm remembering right). I think you would also have to know something about the political climate in Philadelphia at the time of the killing and at the time of the Beasties' limited involvement to understand why people would be upset. A lot of good people supported Mumia because they thought he was an articulate guy who got a raw deal. They may have been misled.
Your censorship question is pointless. You can't answer it yes or no. Of course free speech can't be completely without limit. The hard part is deciding where to draw the lines.

Yeah, but the question is silly. Everyone's going to say they're against censorship, until you ask them further questions. Maybe if you asked whether there is ever an appropriate circumstance for censorship or something.

Not to sound even more stupid than I already did to myself on this thread but, I thought in the U.K. you can say anything/ do anything on t.v. anythime of the night or day? That is what my teacher said anyway...

There's a whole lot you can't say in Britain. Speech is more restricted than in the USA. Perhaps you can show a tit on TV. But the press can't say lots of bad things about the government. And it's easier for someone to sue you for libel/slander if you say something that might not be true.

What? Are you insane? The press in Britain can say whatever the fuck they like, and frequently do. There is no censorship here, beastieluver your teacher was right, but I'm just talking about the idea of censorhip in general.

OH... can I ask you a question then without you getting absoultly pissed at me? How the hell can America be all like "WERE THE LAND OF THE FREE" and "OTHER COUNTRIES WISH THEY HAD WHAT WE HAVE"... its all an illusion. So in the U.K. you can say Fuck, God Damn and anything while you naked at 5:00 P.M. on T.V. and not get censored correct?
I love America but, the only reason I do is because I can say alot needs to change and not get killed.I think we need to stop criticising other countries and, realise where the most fucked up because we have a constitution we dont even pay attention to anymore.
P.S. The Padster ( I know this is off topic) but, are you a fan of Friday Hill/ Blazin' squad?

No, not correct. There are certain times of day when some things are allowed, and other times when they are not. Generally it's after 9 or 10 o'clock that you can have the nudity and the cursing, the assuption being that any parent who is responsible enough to not want their 5 year old listening to some TV character yelling "Fuck you, you cunt" will have put them to bed by that time.
At any rate, 'freedom of speech' to me isn't merely about what words you can use, it's more about intention and criticism. Yes there is a dangerous climate developing in the US today and it needs to be watched carefully, but there's still a hell of a lot more liberty to criticise the government than in many places, and it's worth remembering that. Saying freedom of speech in the US is all an "illusion" is pretty insulting to the thousands of political prisoners rotting in prisons around the world for daring to protest against their governments.

Yeah, pretty much anything goes as long as it's after 9pm. And the media isn't really censored at all in terms of speech, but we do have the mandatory age ratings on DVDs and shit, like 15 for a bit of nudity and swearing and 18 for sexual shit (but no erections allowed) and loads of swearing.
And I don't know who Friday Hill are, but Blazin' Squad are a bunch of stupid talentless pikeys from middle class families who think they're ghetto cuz they wear expensive velvet tracksuits and talk like Jamaicans. Like most people in England I hate them and wish they would die.
