Why is it that if I want 32 oz. of cottage cheese, it's cheaper to buy two 16 oz. tubs than one 32 oz tub?

Why is it that if I want 12 oz. of tuna, it's cheaper -- WAYYYY cheaper -- to buy two six ounce cans than one twelve ounce can?

...and why does that lady at register three just strike me as... as so cheap?

Just curious.

It's the other way around here. If you buy eggs for example and you
know you don't need 10, you'll have to buy 10 anyway, because 6 are
more expensive. So, you buy food you know you'll throw away.

That's uncool, too...

...but I guess that's the way I would expect things to be priced: buy in quantity; it's cheaper.

It's just weird.

Luckily, two gallons of milk is $4.59. One gallon is $3.49. I assume that's supposed to subsidize milk for families with a couple of children or something, but I sure can take advantage of it, even as a single guy. (y) (y) (y) (y)

i always thought it was cheaper for the bigger container. i mean, some stores will give you the per oz breakbown, or whatever unit they use, and its usually slightly cheaper for that bigger one...

but then again, they could be basing their pricing off the fact that they know most people will buy the bigger one because it looks like the one they want, and not compare prices...

Me, too. *shrugs*

Maybe it's because..... I don't know. I assume that Starkist or BumbleBee has already paid off their canning machines, so it's not like the 12 oz. can is still making its money back or something. I have no idea.

...mmmmmaybe. The xpiration says October 2008.

That's better than the Italian store I went to the other day for "exceptional olive oils" for some friends' Christmas gifts.

Most of what was on the shelf was from 2002.

The stuff should be used within about 18 months of its life, so it's odd to me that the only crap these folks had which had a reasonable production date was the most generic of oils I could buy at 2/3rds the price at the regular grocery.

...what is that... about seventy cents U.S.?

This store where I buy the six ounce cans has 'em for fifty-eight cents each right now.

12 oz cans are $2.14.
