Sam,
Didn't you get the memo? The liberals / Democrats need things to go badly in order for them to regain power. They need America to fail.
Please don't pass along all the good things going on such as the huge elections in Iraq, the economy, etc............they need bad new.
Thanks!

Sorry.....I must have missed my "talking points."
I intend to post good news ad infinitum from now on, in order to forcibly eject the pessimistic hand-wringing that permeates these boards.
Look out! :D

Only clicked on the first link. Sorry but there is only so much good news I can take in one sitting.
WASHINGTON - President Bush embraced Sen. John McCain's proposal to ban cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of terrorism suspects on Thursday, reversing months of opposition that included White House veto threats. Bowing to pressure from the Republican-run Congress and abroad, the White House signed off on the proposal after a fight that pitted the president against members of his own party and threatened to further tarnish a U.S. image already soiled by the abuses at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison.
Can you explain to me why cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of suspects had to be explicitly banned instead of being a logical result of civility?
The fact that the White House threatened to veto it in the first place means that they were in favour of cruelty, inhumanity and degradation of suspects, as in people suspected of having done something. Now suddenly Bush "embraces" it.
Politics is so transparant...
I can't see how you can post this as a glorious occasion. This is shit that most of the people on the globe already knows.

Wow, clicked the second one, I was feeling particularly warm and fuzzy.
The strong participation by Sunnis, the backbone of the insurgency, bolstered U.S. hopes that the election could produce a broad-based government capable of ending the daily suicide attacks and other violence that have ravaged the country since the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Bolstered hopes... Hopes?
Whooptiedoo.

Yeah, don't talk about the elections in Iraq, because it'll overshadow Bush's approval ratings, the 2,000 death milestone, Katrina, and all of the other shit Bush has had to deal with this year.
C'mon valv. This good bit of news is like peeing on a fire. It may slow down the flames, but eventually this whole administration is gonna burn down regardless. :p

Actually, his ratings are up, the death rate for Americans has fallen this month, Katrina is long over and the Feds are rebuilding the wall that surrounds New Orleans and nearly everyone unemployed by Katrina has found other jobs and restarted their lives.
Sounds like GOOD news to me

When he's at a bottom of a pit, the only way to go is up. That doesn't mean they're going far, though. Don't forget about our friends and their indictments, either. :)

C'mon.
In that other thread I pointed out that this kind of crap happens in every second term for a Prez and gave you numerous sources that exposed Demos with scandal problems and indictments.

I know that. I'm just saying they're going downhill. Most presidents do their second term, sure. They're definitely no exception.

That isn't "picking apart", I'm not trying to see the darkest of the dark in a good situation.
What you posted were in my opinion teensy tiny silver linings in an otherwise shitty situation presented as if they are a winning lottery ticket.
They aren't even a coupon for free coffee.
Show me some genuinly good news and I'll embrace it regardless of the political meaning.

as i stated before, maybe bush is doing things the way he is because he thinks its the right thing to do and really doesnt care about the polls....
i assume you would rather have a president who leads based on the latest popularity poll??

Fair enough.
Your worldview and mine, quite obviously, do not look at "good" and "bad" news the same way. I suppose there's no real way to be objective about it, since everyone has their own private peccadilloes and idiosyncrasities that they bring to each issue. Throw into that a paradigm that each individual either knowingly or unknowingly subscribes to, and you have the basis for ceaseless debate and unending nitpicking from both sides of any issue.
All that being said, my goal with these threads is to (hopefully) show some progress and "good" news instead of the relentless drumbeat of anti-Bush, anti-America, anti-Israel crap that's TENDED to be our primary debating ground in recent months.

I thought "freedom was on the march"? Whatever the hell that means.
So the voice of the people in a "democracy" shouldn't mean anything at all to the President?

Should Roosevelt have pulled us out of WWII if a poll told him it was unpopular?
Should we not do the right thing just because those who are polled ostensibly speak for the whole country?

Dumb questions as WW2 was not unpopular, and no one would poll against doing the RIGHT thing. That's the key here, more people think we are doing the wrong thing in Iraq.
Ask one of these poor war families who have lost a child over there if they think it was ok to lose that child so Iraqis could vote.

Not really. Wars are hard. People die. Changing paradigms is heavy lifting. Shit happens.
Emotions cannot rule foreign or domestic policy, else we become a theocracy.
LexisNexis shows polls that were taken during WWII, but I don't have access to that site. I truly wonder if WWII was as popular DURING the war as it has become since the war's conclusion. I'd be willing to bet not.

I do try to keep an open mind and give anyone the benefit of the doubt but it's hard to do so sometimes, especially when Dubyah is involved.
