....so: of the stuff of which you actually own a copy (no burning, etc.), how much of it is still stuff you haven't read, listened to, or watched? Ever?

I ask because I made a disturbing discovery the other night. About 45 of my 430-some CDs are things I've never even heard. Now, to be fair, that means (in some cases) that I've heard a certain symphony, but not this recording by this conductor, but that only accounts for about 10 of the CDs.

Ouch.

When I had DVDs, probably less than seven percent were movies I owned but had never seen.

Books? Probably about 30% of my books I own but haven't read. Maybe more.

I have two CD's out of 300 or so that I have not heard. I have 3 books out of around 20 or so that I have not yet read. And movies? I've seen em all. I think I have at least 50.

See? That's restraint.

I buy so many books on the cheap because they look interesting or "I really should read this someday."

To wit: My Thomas Hardy collection. :D

well, i don't own manybooks. most of my collecton is text books now...

i've watched all of my movies to some extent, although i havent sat down and watched the wall in its entirety since i purchased the dvd...

music wise, i have listened to all of my cd's (not counting the one that i just bought and havent had the chance to put on yet). but i'd say i havent listened to about half the records that i own, mainly because the record player athome is in the attic, and since im not home most the time, and when i am i dont want to spend my time moping in the attic, i havent gotten to them

I definetly do that with books...I buy them all the time and then never have time to read. That's probably at least 40% of my books, cause the ones I do read I end up getting at the library!

I don't think I've done that with any of my DVDs but I don't have a very impressive collection. I hardly ever buy them.

When first read this thought "what a dumbass". Then I thought about it and I realized that I do this a lot, I mean a whole lot. Not so much with books, it's hard for me to read some thing longer than a post, but with movies and cd's, all of the time. I'll see a cover, remember the movie, or songs, and think "Damn I need that!" Get it home and nothing. I wish I kept better track of my receipts.

There you go.

See? What makes aperson have to own The Dekalog but only watch three or four episodes?

Don't you wish that you would get barricaded in your house for a day or two? You'd have a chance to explore the stuff in your place you don't know about. Sometimes I fantasize about spending an entire year in a high tech fully supplied living station on the top of a frozen mountain where I'll get to read, watch movies, work out, sleep, learn stuff on my own, and get supplies and (occasional rare) visitors choppered in. Maybe I'd have a dog or two.

I have few DVDs or CDs I've never played, those CDs are usually gifts. Tons of untouched books though.

Yep, yep, yep.

I've got about 30 Coltrane Cds I'd like to hear back to back; all of the Ella Fitzgerald songbooks; Beethoven's quartets... some of this stuff is just demanding attention, man. Even to just hear all of Zepplin's stuff in order would be great. And there's just not time to really listen; you can throw it on in the background, but to really listen?

I'd love to have 10 hours to watch The Dekalog, for instance. That must be amazing to just sit and let unfold. (y)

The only two books that I own that I haven't finished is War and Peace and the second play in Sophocles Oedipus trilogy, Oedipus at Colonus. You'd think I would read them in order, but last year we had to read Antigone for History 100 and the year before in Grade 12 I had to read Oedipus Tyrannus for my World Lit. papers for IB...I should probably read that during the holiday break.

I just finished Notker the Stammerer and Einhard's 'biographies' of Charlemagne in time for my reports...now I want a biography on Einhard...

As for WaP there's not a chance in hell I will ever finish that thing, as much as I want to. It only cost me 4 bucks, and now I can say I own it.

As for music, I've listened to everything I own. I might have 50 CDs so that's not exactly an impressive feat.

Movies, same thing. I can't seem to finish the original Batman Movie. I got an hour in and just couldn't take it...sorry Adam West. :(

Yep. But I'm talking about things that I have never even opened. Opened? WTF. Damn it AZ, you have inspired my for the moment to clean out my unopened shit, and give to charity for Christmas. Thanks. (y)

I totally understand.

I have about 15 CDs still in cellophane.

I have "wrapper-removing" moments where I just go through teh collection and tear the wrap off anything that's still sealed, just because the cellophane winking at me from the occasional media spine makes me feel guilty.

The book I have is the Paul Roche version. 1958 was the original print date, but mine is a sexy 1991 reprinting. I'll scan the cover.

No Fitzgerald on this copy. I like the cover of this one, what with the old plate with Oedipus on it.

I frequently have this same fantasy except that I am barricaded in northern Minnesota with all my books and music, as well as coffee.

Years ago, I thought about buying a house I couldn't afford and as I was running through my budget and realized that I couldn't eat our or see concerts anymore, I thought that maybe I'd be forced to read the approximately 100 books I own but haven't read (as well as the other 100 or so on my library list). I ended up staying in my apartment a while longer instead.

I've listened to almost all of my CDs, though I did notice yesterday that I had loaded a few on itunes and promptly forgot about them.

(the only VHS movies I own and haven't watched are the two Adrock movies and I'm too scared to watch them.)

I don't have an CD's to which I haven't listened. I listen to them within the first few days after purchase. I may only hear them once, though.

I have two books that were given to me to read but I haven't had the inclination to get involved in them. Both James Patterson mysteries, so easy reading when I get motivated.

I only own a handful of DVD's and they're all for the kid.

I do have 3 Netflix rentals that have been waiting for viewing for the past two weeks. One is for the kid, but the grandparents said March of the Penguins will be too disturbing for him. Might be for me, too.

I have listened to all the music I have, except my Foo Fighters latest box set is unopened. It took several months for me to get it and by that time I had downloaded it from soulseek so I never wanted to take the shrink off.

The videos' I think I've watched them all, don't buy that much anyway. I taped an awful lot back in '96 when I was on sickleave for three months and I got some movie cable channel for free for that time (they had perfect timing calling me :D ) and I still haven't watched them all, I think.
I only have a few DVD's, but the only player I have is on my computer so I haven't bothered to watch them all cause it's a bit of a pain in the eyes to watch films on comp screen.

But books! Oh man!
There's a book sale here every February and every time I go abroad (read England) I buy loads of books and there's about 50% that I haven't read. Also I buy an awful lot of coffee table books and gardening books and those aren't usually for reading, they're more for "checking things out when needed".

All of my CDs I've listened to. I make sure to give a spin to my new purchases fairly immediately (because my dad has stuff from more than 10 years ago that he still hasn't OPENED, so I don't want to go down that path). However, that doesn't mean there aren't stuff I should be listening to more often. For the CDs that have the bonus DVDs and the like, there's actually a bunch of them where I still haven't watched the DVDs. With the Christmas holidays upon me, I plan on watching some of those.

Among my movies, I think I've watched everything at least once (though there's a handful of recent purchases I need to watch). However, I think there's some special features on the DVDs I haven't gotten around to.

When it comes to books, I'm the most horrible person on earth. I've got too many Hemingway books and other such stuff I still haven't read. I'm a notoriously slow reader and I never seem to have the time to read 'em (I'm either too distracted by music, movies, everyday life, this damn internet... and when I want to read, I get too tempted by music magazines instead of my books :( ). One of these days, one of these days...

I buy movies I've already seen. I get the spiffy special editions and then never touch them.

I've got special editions of seven, pulp fiction, scarface and I have never had the dvd out of the box.

Worst of all, I also have Fight Club and have been meaning to see it since forever. I found the receipt and I bought it last january.

Might pop it in nowish. Or tomorrow.

I have not read around 75% of my book collection, not watched around 5% of my movie collection, and not listened to around 10-20% of my music collection.

Dude, I need to start reading.
