View Full Version : Late to the Party...an older fans story...

Perhaps I shouldn't clain "older" status since I am most likely the top demographic for the Beasties? 34, probably a lot around that age?
Anyways...I was in Aruba in 89 hanging with this black kid from Miami and he was going on and on about Pauls Boutique, "you heard License to Ill right? It's nothing like that way way better way different".
At 17, and still addicted to Led Zeppelin, I remember being "hmm yeah I should listen to it...yeah ok whatever..."
Then in college Check your Head and Ill Communication came out and I liked what I heard on radio and on MtV but never bought any of their stuff.
THEN...as a young adult out on my own in Florida my wifes younger brother bought Hello Nasty while we were at a mall together. We listened to it in the car and I distinctly remember the secend song "yo ... yo ... yo ..." and thinking FUCK that is funky!!! And then I must have forgotten this...
So throughout the 16 years between that kid telling me about how great PB is and me buying it 3 months ago I must have heard from about 10 people and 5 reviews telling me how freaky great it is.
So during the past 3 months all I can listen to is the Beastie Boys! And it doesn't look like it will pass anytime soon. Just too damn interesting, funky and varied.
It is kinda cool I found out so late because all of this has been so new. I was just thinking "man, you know I haven't bought any new music for a long time, nothing really great any more?"
So...there thought someone might get a little kick out of that story.
I should really starting keeping a list of things to do!

one of those "Beastie Miracles" the first time I heard them was a few years ago when I was like 7 and my dad blasted No Sleep Til Brooklyn and I had no idea what the hell it was. Now I am 13 and know every word to it and the story behind it and all that stuff an obsessed fan knows. Also I discovered all the other magnificent songs they have. (y) (y) :)
p.s. welcome!!! (!) :)

welcome, MrPeters!!
Beastie Boys influenced my taste in music back in the late 80's, from Zeppelin to Marley and Bob Dylan, anything they referenced or sampled I was investigating...

I'm 32 years old, and been down since '85. The first memory I have of the Beasties is from the movie Krush Groove. I saw the video shortly after that at a local skating rink on a class room size movie screen. I don't know how many black people are on this site, but I'm one of them, if not the only one. At that time, the reaction to the Beasties was definitely mixed. Some people I knew hated the fact that some white guys were rappin' and others liked them because the music was good. I liked "She's on it" but it didn't blow me away. I also didn't think too much about their appearance in Krush Groove, either. Probably because it was so brief, and they were getting mixed responses from the audience in the movie (mostly boos). I looked like it was supposed to be some sort of comic relief, not to be taken serious. I knew some guys a little older than me who had the single, and I don't remember anyone who didn't like "Slow and Low". I didn't see the "Raisin Hell" tour, but it definitley put the word on the street that the Beasties were dope. By the time "Licensed to Ill" came out, everybody was down. That's a Hip-Hop classic for sure. Hands down! I never liked "Fight for Your Right", but the video was dope. To make a long story short, the black audience loved the Beasties, but felt slighted when they left Def Jam. Even though they continued to make great albums, to the black audience (the original Hip-Hop audience/ along with east coast latinos) the Beasties fell off the radar. I'm sure not in every single case (like myself), but in general. But I'll end with this: Everyone I know that saw the first Hip-Hop Honors, was blown away by the Beasties performance of "Sucka Emcees". That song is a classic, and I listened to it every morning before school my 5th grade year. The Beastie Boys got mad respect in Hip-Hop history. That fact is non-debatable! Back in the day many emcees would boast about how they would still be rockin' when they're old-n-gray, and in rocking chairs, and shit (paraphrasing). Looks like the the Beasties are the only ones who pulled it off. That's public record. Respect Due!

I'm 26 and have been a fan since 1994, Ill Communications.
I loved them at once, but I only owned Ill Communications. I bought LTI because of Fight For Your Right shortly after (fell in love quickly with Girls and Brass Monkey). I didn't buy their other discs however, until 2004 and that was because even though I loved their songs from those 2 albums, I had never bothered to check out their other albums :o
Now I know most of their songs. I do listen a lot to their music and I do go on "binges" (have to listen to Beastie Boys and only Beastie Boys) but I still don't know a lot about the boys themselves.
I got to see them live for the first time November 8, 2004 at the Air Canada Centre, Toronto. And, I will never forget that date!! It was actually my first real concert. I was on the floors and had the best time in my life. I now am very sad realizing how many times they have come here and I could have seen them before then, but what can you do?
When they come back here (cause I know they will) I will definitely be at that concert!!
I joined the boards here slightly before that concert because I wanted to learn more about the boys and I check in here about once every few days (sometimes more, sometimes less).
I have learned very much here and have become more of a fan because of that.
Thanx to everyone!! :) (y)

I'm 31 my brother brought me my first Beastie's record in 85/86 which was "Cookie Puss" a bit of time later on TV & in the press! there they were! how cool were those guys & of course the music rocked!....(I was hooked)
My brother kind of liked them but knew I listened to there music! every week he would buy me a new record or picture disc 7 inch vinyl from "Shes on it, rock hard, ffyr, Brass monkey, nstb etc.etc...." I had a shit load of old vinyl!
1987 came & they were playing in London at Brixton, I was 12 or 13, I told my
parents I was going...lol....they hated them!!...so you can guess there answer!
I've seen them many times now even met them! but I wont go into that cause I've posted about that a few times on the board here! (when they left the stage at london 2004, I was presented with the drum stick used in Gratitude & sabotage....amoungst other things!!! OK enough!)
BIG SHOUT OUT TO CEY ADAMS!
