....sorry, folks: our boy Jake blew it. So to speak.
Heath is great, and this could've been a great movie, but Jake just wasn't there, chemistry-wise. So I can't believe how these two got together, and thank God Heath's character carries most of the story.
King Kong has a really similar problem, even worse: I'm not invested at all in that relationship (Ann/Kong). At least with Brokeback Mountain, I give a damn about Heath (Ennis?), and, even more so, his wife, because she gets treated pretty awfully badly and I felt real pain for her watching her husband go off with this other guy "fishing," and how alive he became whenever the guy was around, etc. Yowch.
Brokeback Mntn. looks fantastic, for the most part. Ledger's performance is probably the best this year. It's not quite up there in the pantheon of great performances (Brando/Streep/DeNiro/Theron), but it's close enough to wait and see.
Seymour Hoffman might've just had the Oscar plucked from his hands, as far as that stuff goes.
Brokeback Mountain: B
King Kong: C+

I'm supposed to go see Brokeback Mountain with my gay roommate. Unforunately, it hasn't been released over here yet. I think it'll be interesting to hear his take on the movie and comparing/contrasting it with mine since... well, he's gay and I'm not.
King Kong on the other hand... I've got no desire to see. I do, however, think it's funny that there are some people that are calling the film racist (http://www.drudgereport.com/flash6.htm). But, whatever. People will do what they wanna do.

The sex scenes in Brokeback... I don't know. There was one of just the two of them kissing in an outside stairway that I TOTALLY believed, and it really worked, but the main one that kind of launches the whole adventure or what have you... the one that gets the story rolling.... about 15% believability. I mean, I know that drunk sex happens in lots of different ways, but these guys just went from zero to sixty in about 8 seconds, in a way that I just couldn't believe at all since one was resisting so much. You know? I believe someone caving in, maybe, but not when there's been zero contemplation shown on this guy's side. Well, whatever.
Mainly, I just really didn't believe in these guys' "love." The SITUATION rang true just fine, but it was the same as with any romance or anything else in a movie that I just can't buy the main premise... you can excel in all the other departments, but if I don't buy your fundamental plot device, we're in trouble.
That's the sort of reason I couldn't watch, say, MISS CONGENIALITY. I'm sorry -- a movie hinged on the idea that Sandra B. is UGLY!? Are you NUTS!?
VERTIGO suffers because Kim Novack's characters are just so unattractive to me that it's hard to feel that Stewart's anything besides a major, delusional chump. Fine for most characters, but this was a respected detective who allegdly had some brains and savvy? Forget it.
Etc.
As far as KONG goes -- I don't feel bad for the ape much at all. And I don't ever really understand why Ann (Naomi Watts) gets hung up on him, either. It's sort of a given without any actual motivation shown, and that winds up more an more distancing each time they're in scenes where they're "connecting" or "sharing a moment" or whatever and they pretty clearly aren't there. They've leapt ahead in the emotional logic of the story and it just leaves the audience behind, as if signifiers equal earned empathy or something.
I could recommend Brokeback Mountain; can't recommend Kong.
Anybody else? Nygel chipped in... Buehler? Anybody?

I think one of the big issues that they really underdone in King Kong is the remains of the other gorilla in that cave where Ann and Kong fall asleep near. They show it matter-of-factly (I know I used that wrong but bear with me here ha), and I'm sure most people thought nothing of it. But obviously, that means a companion died, he's the only one. The guy is lonely! With Ann, she ended up entertaining him, and she fought back as well when he was pushing her too much (when she hits his hand and says NO!) When Ann runs off on her own she runs in to danger at every corner. The dinosaurs, the bugs, etc. Kong comes to protect her everytime, and wants to keep protecting her. He saved her from death. He showed emotion towards her as well (being entertained by her, looking at the sunset with her, playing in central park, etc). When Kong showed any anger and threw people around/etc it was because he was trying to get to Ann.
In the beginning of the movie, it's mentioned how Ann had a hard life, and everyone she ever knew always left her. Kong was the one that kept after her and protected her.

These are great points.
The skeleton must've been a blink-and-you-miss-it thing, or it just happened to be when I dashed off to pee, because I never saw it.

I can see why you compare Kong and Brokeback.
One is a remake of a remake that didn't need to be remade.
And one might just change the way people look at relationships -- though not CJ or Norcen.

NOT REALLY SPOILERS AHEAD, BUT SEMI-HEMI-DEMI SPOILERS AHEAD
...I dunno.
I'm afraid that the way this movie gets interpreted is "oh those poor two dudes who had to hide their sexuality....!"
Well.... uh, maybe. I don't see either of them as laudible or anything, though; they both freely cheat on the people they did actually commit their lives to; one of the two doinks anything that moves because he's so lonely without his man, etc. The pain that Heath's character inflicts on his wife without pause is intolerable.
...and is all of that because heterosexual society "made them do it"? I do not doubt in any way that times have always been tough for gay people, but that doesn't FORCE a gay person to marry and continue a cycle of pain and abuse through their marriages and offspring.
Is it a good movie? Heck, yeah. Could've been a masterpiece, even. But that doesn't make Ennis a heroic tragic figure any more than it makes Jake LaMotta one.
I get so sick of "society made me the victim." There's a point where people just have to say, "Fuck it: I'm starting with me" and leading honorable lives.
