I'm sure Bush needed to lie to get to the terrorists faster...
APRIL 19, 2004, Hershey, Pennsylvania:
"You see, what that meant is if you got a wiretap by court order -- and by the way, everything you hear about requires court order, requires there to be permission from a FISA court, for example."
APRIL 20, 2004, Buffalo, New York:
"Any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order...Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so."
JULY 14, 2004, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin
"A couple of things that are very important for you to understand about the Patriot Act. First of all, any action that takes place by law enforcement requires a court order...In other words, the government can't move on wiretaps or roving wiretaps without getting a court order...What the Patriot Act said is let's give our law enforcement the tools necessary, without abridging the Constitution of the United States, the tools necessary to defend America."
etc.
"Asked whether Bush had misled the US public, Bush spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday that Bush 'was talking about (the issue) in the context of the Patriot Act.'"
Standard.
For years, Bush said court orders required for spying

I love the fact that his defense of the entire situation is that it is a secret. That it is shameful that they leaked this and that it is helping the terrorists win. I'm sure this is the first the terrorists are hearing about wiretapping.
When are these fuckers going to stop waving the 9/11 flag and stop trying to grab all the power they can.
See Cheney's Nightline interview? He referred to the "3,000 AMERICANS that died on 9/11" at the beginning of any answer having to do with wiretapping or the Iraq war,
Obviously, they know what is good for us better than we do. Who wants the responsibility of all those civil liberties anyway?

Cheney said we haven't had any attacks since 9/11 on U.S. soil which shows that wire tapping is a useful tool. We didn't have any attacks on U.S. soil between Pearl Harbor and 9/11 so what does that prove?

Blowing up a large portion of japan gets you a couple of decades of peace.
But after that you need to blow up some other country.

Serious talk of impeachment has started to arise.
He all but admitted it.

He all but admitted it.NO! Make the fekker stay and deal with the shitstorm he and his cronies have stirred up.
I heard ages ago that Rummi asked George to fire him and George said "No way"!

At the time Rumsfeld was taking a lot more flak than Bush. I reckon that they claimed that Rumsfeld's offer of resignation had been denied by Bush to stop the calls for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Although I am loathe to make anything that could be vaguely construed to resemble a defense of Dick Cheney or really anyone in the current administration, I do have to say, that bit there is not exactly true. If you recall, the WTC was bombed in 1993, and I seem to recall there was an incident also in the 90's in Arizona(?) involving an attempt to derail Amtrak trains to disrupt commerce/travel.

i stand corrected Peachy. I forgot about the WTC in the 90s. Thank goodness i'm not working for Homeland Security :D
Oklahoma was domestic christian/exsoldier terrorism which doesnt count.

Which is why I didn't mention it. Or the Olympic park bombing, or any of the Ted Kaczinsky stuff.
But I'm pretty sure I remember reading around the time that the Arizona/Amtrak thing was shown to be linked to a midlde-eastern terror network, no?

I'm not aware of that. Doesn't mean it didn't happen...

Damn it, I couldn't find very good info on it either now. It was Oct 9 1995, and a note or something was found claiming it was carried out by a group calling themselves 'Sons of the Gestapo'. So initially domestic terrorosm was suspected, but then apparently there was some reason to suspect that this 'Sons of Gestapo' group made the claim opportunistically and that it was not domestic. Or something. But I can't find any good clear info past that. Damn it. This is going to annoy me for at least the next 5 minutes.

I'd really like to know if Bush used any wiretapping for political purposes. Dick Nixon, anyone?

For political purposes? How could he? A judge would have... oh, i see.

Not true.
What about Oklahoma City? Or the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center?

Don't forget the Oklahoma City bombing!
And the World Trade Center in '93. My dad was on the forensic team for both bombings, and he brought home some pretty awesome pictures. The WHOLE bottom of the WTC was entirely blown the fuck out. It was so powerful that the Presidential limo that was parked across the street was blown over and itswindows blown out. I have a chunk of the bullet-proof window in my room.
My dad had the coolest job before he retired.

I find that interesting. Can you please tell me the timeline history of this Dick Cheney you speak of. Particularly who was he working for when he is now speaking about presidental powers being weakened after a Watergate and Vietnam. Rumfield would make an excellelant footnote in this as well. And I don't know why but I keep thinking abou a Donald Rumfield glad hand to Sadam and him
