Skinks are actually more closly related to lizards than snakes - even the legless varieties of skink have lizard genes/characteristics and are actually classed as lizards. They're is a reptile that is kinda inbetween snakes and lizards called an amphisbaenian. So different is it from snakes and lizards it has actually now been clasified as a seperate species. Some scientists look at them as a "link" between, but this theory is slowly dieing. They may be involving in a similar way but it is unlikly that skinks turned into snakes.

Its a weird creature that lives underground, and one i have been lucky enough to encounter twice in spain when turning over rocks. I don't have a picture near but here is one i googled for:
