View Full Version : Anybody have any good ideas about how to just shut the fuck up?

I'm curious.
It's probably symptomatic of really wanting to talk after so many years of just listening to other people's shit; that, or it just indicates how little I care about whoever is being tortured by my words and whatever that person/those people might just have to bring to the party.
But for the last few months, man, it's ridiculous. At the slightest provocation, I begin holding forth or something and then only realize after the gang's all gone that I just monopolized the hell out of that conversation. No -- not a monopoly so much as a coup.
Seriously. Other than duct-taping my mouth shut, which is a little impractical for existing in the world at large (plus then, someone might ask "Why the duct tape?" and I would start to speak) -- any ideas or hints or tips on how to just shut the fuck up?

Try to not be the 1st or last person to talk in a conversation.
Also, keep in mind people might enjoy what you have to say.

Take up smoking or drinking. It will give your mouth something else to do. Or just hang out with people over dinner.

I have the same confliction...
I say keep on talking...you're bound to have company that will like what you have to say...even if it's a lot of bullshit that makes absolutely no sense...
ya never know...you could be famous!! like:
George W. Bush
Bill O'Reily (and everyone at Fox News)
Rush Limbaugh
Donald Rumsfeld
Dick Chenny
Condoleeza Rice
Dennis Miller
Dan Rather
Martha Stewart
Eminem (the early days)
I know there's gotta be more out there...
See, there's still hope!!

I was starting to notice a trend. :(
I'm not sure that folks realize I am 100% serious about this.
So far, all I have is a cryptic post it note on my computer monitor to hopefully remind me.

Holy smokes! "Whinging" really is a word, and used correctly in this context! I thought you kids were just adding another to your long list of typos all this time. Wow.

Sometimes, it's a product of who you're with. Some people really have nothing to say and they have only perfected the art of asking questions. They tend to be very popular.
I have a friend like that, and everytime we have lunch I promise myself the whole way there that I'll ask HER questions and get HER to talk. But at the end of the meal, my jaw aches from talking too much and I realize that she has done nothing but ask me questions. I can't answer "what's going on with your mom?" in less than 30 minutes.
So I think that maybe trying to shut up isn't enough. You need a list of standby questions to ask others.
Also, when someone asks how you're doing or how someone in your family is, it is probably better to say something like "Fine" than to tell the truth and start a long complicated story.

Yeah -- I'm an over-answerer -- big time. I try to say "the short version is:" and go from there.

...so the penicillin is probably okay for that one.
What gets you out of that one? Should I just crumble some cheese in a corner and see if you creep out after it?

Do you give too much background and go off on tangents? I have a close friend who does that and it makes us love him all the more, but we do tease him. He has trouble in casual conversations with acquaintances.
I sometimes give too much background.

...I'm a storyteller by nature, and so a lot of things wind up being stories.
Not just "have you had lunch?" but the STORY of lunch, ya know? Not always, but when something's happened, yeah.
Also, I have this empathy-uniting thing, so if someone has told their story about whatever and I can relate, sometimes I bat the ball back across the net with the story of "yeah, that's like what happened to me..."
THAT'S the stuff I absolutely have to cut out. It probably seems like competing or being a last-word freak.
