This is the one movie this year that I'm excited to see. It better be fabulous!
The Munich Olympics is the most vivid memory of my childhood. I was riveted to the TV for the first time in my life. It was quite the sporting event. I gave my dad updates on what was happening when he was working in the garage or basement on whatever projects he was doing. It was the first time I saw gymnastics and it was the coolest thing ever.
Then these scary guys took the Israelis hostage. That was my first exposure to kidnapping and terrorism, and I could not understand what the guys in the ski masks wanted. I vividly remember watching them prowl around, live on TV. Stuff like that didn't happen back then. I didn't understand what happened when everyone died. I followed the story for years and was excited that the terrorists were tracked down and murdered. I was surprised to learn that they also killed an innocent guy.
The documentary that came out a few years ago sucked. I'm counting on you Steven.
yeah, it does look like an interesting movie. i'm pretty excited to see it.
i saw it in theatres tonight. it was a pretty intense movie. some parts were a little over the top, but it was entertaining over-all.

very, very good movie. it's draining, though - you'll feel like absolute trash and have no faith in humanity afterward. and be sort of terrified to start your car.
pee before you go into the theater. trust me.

We saw it yesterday. We see films in the theater so rarely but I felt really compelled to see Munich. Mostly because of Tony Kushner's involvement.
I was 2 when the incident at the Olympics happened so I was too young to have any memories from when it happened. It was just something I learned about over the years but never really knew much about.
It was an intense film and the way it ended really hit home. Steven Spielberg called the film his prayer for peace and I am grateful for it.
It does raise some political questions, for instance the point is made that the assassinations would be made so that Israel would not appear weak in the face of terror however as the killings occur the feeling is that they are for revenge and of course the book the film is based on is called Vengeance. I don't know enough about the situation to know how fair or accurate that is. But the motivation behind the assassinations ultimately doesn't matter much in terms of the ideas presented in the film (well, I don't know if that's fair to say..)
There's really a lot of food for thought in the film and also a lot to appreciate in terms of the filmmaking (inc. the acting & writing etc.).
Hubby and I had questions about the incident in Munich because again we didn't know enough to be able to follow what was going down with the kidnappers and the hostages at the airport (and the incident wasn't the focus of the film so it was plainly presented and a bit chaotic). We did some further reading after we got home, one thing he read is that only one of the Palestinians they killed (the last assassination taking place in 1992) turned out to actually have been involved in the Munich kidnapping.
I thought the film was excellent and I haven't always been the biggest Spielberg fan, I had to start grudgingly giving him more respect in the 90s as his filmmaking started moving to another level. Some people have called this his masterpiece so that alone would seem to make it a must-see..

this was one of those things i had heard a bit about, but nobody really ever told me what. i just knew that somehting bad had happened.
i really do want to see this movie, but i feel the need to bring some company along with me when i go...
** giving away a bit of a spolier**
i found a few parts to be absolutely ridiculous, including the end when he's having sex wih his wife while remembering the "assault" on the terrorists. i laughed pretty hard at how dumb that was. it was suppose to be dramatic, but it was way too over the top. other than a few things like that, it was an entertaining movie. the movie was based on the stuff that happened, but i wouldn't take all the things they showed to heart.

yeah, THAT part was a little (okay, a lot) over the top. it just made me kind of uncomfortable. i mean, the faces he was making. who does that during sex?!

I still haven't seen it. I'm stuck in a horrid little town and I'm pooped whenever I'm not working. If things work out on Wednesday, I'm hoping to see it then.
My dad thought the Israelis were just marvelous because of how they handled it, which is not like my dad at all.
I just found out that someone I know (more of a friend of a friend) knew one of the murdered athletes and he's apparently more fixated on this than I am.

I thought it was really good. I was a bit worried going in that it would be alot of pro-Isreal propaganda, but I was pleased to find that it wasn't really "pro" either side, just anti-violence. Nice work.

So I saw this film yesterday....
Very depressing and pretty boring- It shows what a reprehensible bunch of shits us humans are but takes far to long to make that point - lots of pretty stupid bits too (Like why did they shoot that chick with bicylcle pump gubs - they served no purpose).
Needed a good editing there was not 3 hrs of material in this movie it could have been half as long I reckon

I must have been the only one who didn't like this movie. I thought the pacing was bizarre and it didn't know if it wanted to be a suspense thriller or a character study. Waaaay too long.

Hmmm, I did like Steve's "Armistad" film jobby though, with Tony Hopkins. Is it as well directed?

Fairly - you dotn come out thinking it was particularly well directed - the sets are very good - create a kind of gritty 70s Europe feel very well, it is ever so long tho - I would recommend geetting it on DVD - a film has to be very good to justify sitting in uncomfortable cinema seats for that long!

I hate cinemas. They have a diuretic effect on me, usually about 30-45 minutes in. Especially if I have already been to the toilet just in case.

i was dissapointed, i was expecting a much better film.
it was well made technically, well acted etc. but it seemed to amount to little more than a series of vignettes that didn't seem to go anywhere. it did feel very authentic though.
and although i could see what Spielberg was trying to do with it, the *ahem* CLIMAX of the film was a bit much...the two opposing images didn't seem to fit for me.
OK overall...

Ha, Im the same way - I always have to go just before the film starts otherwise all thro the film I can think of nothing but whether I need to go or not.
I usually rate how could a film is by how long it is before I first start thinking how uncomfortable I am. Munich was about 30mins which is quite poor - especially when there is still 150 mins to to go!
By 2 hours in I had counted the number of people in the cinema which is a very bad sign.

Damn, what a bunch of losers. Only painful movie I've seen in a cinema is the last installment of the Lord of the Rings...it had like 20 endings, just when it would fade and I started to get up, BOOM! Another scene. I think I heard a gunshot and brain splatter somewhere in the back that day.
Hmmm, on my top 3 list (to watch).
