'When we make music we don't necessarily think about the commercial outcome of those songs,' says Mike D. 'For us it's about following something that we like, picking a sound here or there and going with it. Our music is about what inspires us, what makes us laugh, what makes us sick. We are the Beastie Boys and it's our job to shake up your conception of us."
from Solid Gold Hits-"A Story" Part 2 (http://top40-charts.com/news.php?nid=19511)
this should be read to all the biters and haters out there, I read this and was inspired to share it with you fans...

"I give thanks for inspiration
It guides my mind along the way
A lot of people get jealous
They're talking about me
But thats cause they havent got a thing to say"
100% inspiration + 100 % talent = The Beastie Boys

The boys definately have their own sound. That's what makes them unique and sets them apart from other bands.
That and a high percentage of what they do (lyrics, instruments, and beats) are done by themselves. I mean think of all the bands nowadays (pop culture wise) that have other people find beats for them and write lyrics to. That's why those songs only stay popular and fresh for a short period of time because they are doing stuff musical wise that appeals to the fans 'right now.'
For many years now the beasties have created their own sound even including 'to the 5 boroughs.' Seriously, think of another album that sounded like that in 2004.
Can you seriously think of one really popular song by the beastie boys that 1) Only appealed to fans for a short period or 2) stayed fresh only for a short period then faded out?
Fight for your right: No, still used at parties today
So Whatcha Want: What sounded like that in 92? Nirvana, gangsta rap? NO!
Sabotage: Still sounds fresh today. It would have been great just as a Inst.
Intergalactic: I cant think of one song that even remotely sounds like that.
Every Beastie album sounds really new to me. I'm sure its the same for most of you here, if not, you wouldnt be here.
'Well Drunk a skunk am I from the celebration
To peep that freak unique penetration'
Sorry haha. Had to say that mike d line. I have been playing that verse all week in my car. Rewind play, rewind play, rewind play.
