Just wanted to congratualte the Beastie Boys for making number 6 on the MTV Platinum club countdown last week (don't remember the date). Number 6 out of 15 I believe it was. The countdown was totally based on album sales 16.1 million for the Boys so far. I fnd it noteworthy that those artists who scored higher album sales were for the most part Gangsta/drug rappers.
Also wanted just say Thanks to the B-Boys for providing me with 20 years ( I came on board in '86 when a friend brought over his casette of LTI) of Rump Shakin Action and unmatched lyrical flow. NOBODY in the industry does it like the Beastie Boys do it. I'm 32 and I'll keep buying albums as long as they continue to make them. I hope they become the Rolling Stones of Hip Hop :D .
Anyway, Happy Holidays to all you guys.
Peace on Earth

I just thought it was so great that they out sold B.I.G, P. Diddy, and LL Cool J by a substantial amount. When you consider the differences in the B-Boys style compared to everyone else on the list it's a huge statement. They broke ranks with Def Jam years ago and basically made the type of hip-hop they wanted to. Take that Russel

good stuff there, does anyone noticed the beasties have like, 6 months of big time popularity during their release period for a new album (3 months before and 3 months after) but then they just kinda fade away and it's like 'oh, the beastie boys, those guys are pretty cool'. Shame, they deserved to be remembered for the legends they are, hopefully they will in time.

i think it's by choice that they are aren't all up in the glitz of shit. beastie boys are wise.
the US media and general public's attention span is shit. You have to be a champ like Chingy to hold on to that number one spot.

If you go to www.riaa.com (and hit the "gold & platinum" link, and then the "searchable database" and finally throw their name into the artist field) you'll see that it appears that they've sold more than 16 or so million if you count everything up. Shit, License to Ill sold like 9 by itself. Also, the bestsellers link has them selling 22 million. I'm almost 100% positive that the figures there are JUST USA, because if you go to the "about us" page it says:
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States.

They truly are a breed apart in the hip-hop world. I honestly don't listen to any other current rap artists if I can help it. Way too much violence for my taste. The B-Boys are just so uncanny with the lyrics. I think time and again that's what sells me on their music, of course the beats are excellent, but the lyrics are amazing, and often simple.
I don't really have a favorite album, I think they are all great and they have so few anyway . I can say that it is often difficult to go back and listen to LTI because it is so far removed from what they have done since. I mean worlds apart.

Spitting wouldn't make them popular- you've clearly never heard of El Hadj Diouf.
