suggest one artist that you think everyone should give a listen to. try for something that most people won't know, but should be able to get their hands on something by said group. and maybe suggest an album or a couple tracks that would be best to try.
just 1!
i will start:
Monster Magnet - heavy rock/metal type stuff. check out stuff from the albums "monolithic baby" or "spine of god"

I'm sorry, man, but I'd rather have sex with a jar of broken glass than listen to Monster Magnet.
My choice: Minus the Bear (members from Botch, who would kick the living shit out of Monster Magnet.)

Meat Puppets - '80s alternative/underground. First were a hardcore group, then expanded their sound to include some folk and country-ish elements to their own desert-style take on punk rock (they're from Phoenix, Arizona). Were a HUGE influence on Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. "Meat Puppets II" is a must to listen to...

you all need to step your recommendation game up and yousend some shit [actually i'm not sure if its cool to post copyrighted material on this board...so whatever]
colder [marc nguyen tan]
electronic production, you can figure out the inspiration behind the vocals yourselves. which isn't to say that colder sounds like postal service [electronic + male vocals]. here is a single, 'crazy love':

Giant Robot - a "dub rock" or "city funk" band. It's pretty hard to place them under one genre. Hip hop, rock, electro, r 'n' b, it's all there.
Here's the video for the song Helsinki Rock City:

Roxy Music.
Without this, there is no Duran Duran, and without Duran Duran, there is nothing.

definitely Arctic Monkeys (y) (y) (y)
nice one - when i heard about these i thought they were gonna be poo and i that i would have heard it all before. their stuff does sound familiar but "i bet you look good on the dancefloor" is a massive tune and i'm sure they will get better.
Mattafix - listen to this album if you like massive attack, zero 7, groove armada etc. Big city life is the key track

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
the first self titled album for rockier stuff (Whatever Happened To My Rock'N'Roll, Love burns, Spread your love and the excellent White Palms)
second album (Take Them On, On Your Own) for Six Barrel Shotgun, In Like The Rose and beautiful And I'm Aching
latest album Howl for surprising country/hillbilly/gospel/r'n'r mixup (Shuffle Your Feet, Howl, Devil's Waitin', Ain't No Easy Way and one of their best, hidden in the end; Open Invitation)
and they have loads of excellent b-sides and some yet non-released songs, but you can start with those.

I'll second chiodos, that's real good music and I don't like emo at all. Prog=(y).
Jaga Jazzist; Norwegian nu-jazz or future jazz is what I hear the genre is called. It sounds like jazz/rock fusion (and electronic) timbres combined with dancy rhythms and great melodies. It's a ten-member band, and it sounds like nothing I've heard before. My favorite album by far is What We Must (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00080EU44/qid=1136161461/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-9931318-3376029?v=glance&s=music&n=507846). Check the songs 'All I Know is Tonight' and 'Oslo Skyline.'
