I dig him. We saw him live in berkeley and I laughed so hard my belly ached and my cheeks hurt from smiling. We though he put on a great show. humor is a very individul thing. there are lots of popular comedians I don't care for and then there are some that I think are phenomenal. I don't know if I'd put Dane in the phenom category, but he makes me pee my pants.

I use to think Howie Mandel was not funny at all, then in sometime in the 90's he did a stand up special on HBO or something and I was shocked beacuse I laughed my ASS off. He had totally changed his delivery and material and it worked for me. Go figure. I never saw it coming.

Dane Cook has fairly decent delivery. I will give him that. His structure and shit is well executed. However, the jokes/subject matter is very very mediocre at its VERY best. Nothing particularly unique or new or hilarious. Ive listened to a shit ton of his stuff and I think Im just missing something.

You said he SUCKS! That's a ton more harsh than agreeing on all points with what sweetcheeks said. I love when people make an adjective out of a noun, especially a proper noun, a name, it's so schmoozy, like you just lifted your head off a line of coke over a glass coffee table so you could put a French cigarette in your mouth and make the neurotic man next to you feel intimidated and awkward. Maybe that's too Woody Allen movie though.

I can't help what I laugh at, and I know that it might reveal how unsophisticated I am when I say I laugh at him. I think he's always been funny whenever I've seen him, except for the time he delivered a speech at the roast of Jimmy Kimmel or Drew Carey or someone.

sweetcheeks

its true, its true.

thinking somethings funny doesnt mean you lack sophistication...it means you have a different sense of humor. To me, most of his shits so obvious that it feels like "okay, idiots would find this funny" and a lot of people whos opinions I trust enjoy his shit. Who knows. Ive met people who dont find the Simpsons funny. Generally that completely voids their judgement in my mind.

I don't think good delivery and visual comedy can be overrated because to me, you could be saying anything at all, reading from the Joy of Cooking, and if you do it funny, it's funny. Material is immaterial in those cases.

Wit and insightful cleverness have their own strength as well, and are awfully funny too, but without good comedic timing they fall flat as jokes.

The Notorious LOL
01-06-2006, 02:52 AM
right but again its all in how its delivered and theres a lot of variants. If Dane Cook is mostly a visual comedian, then why are his cds so popular? you arent seeing a thing hes doing, just listening to his material which fails to stand out in any merit in my mind.

I think a part of it honestly is mostly looks. The fact that hes this sort of athletic looking "hunky" dude that every sorority slut in America wants to bone probably adds to his popularity. Patton Oswalt is much funnier than Dane Cook can ever hope to be but hes stubby and awkward looking. Mitch Hedberg was much funnier than Dane Cook, but he looked like a slightly burnt out hippie. Its the whole "visual appeal/fixation" thing that we kind of cling to.

I met a kid at a party once who said "Dane Cook is like..the Richard Pryor of our generation".

In a way he was right, and that sort of indirectly explains why our generation sucks such huge balls.

Nuzzolese

He also does good sound effects with different ways that he wraps his hands and mouth around the mic. I don't know why his CDs are so popular! Probably becuase people saw him on stage and then have to buy his shit so they feel like legit FANS, and they forget that it's going to get old soon because jokes get old.

Dane Cook, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon - Frat house next door looking guy, approachable, reminds you of duders you know, familiar and young and energetic and you feel like you are laughing with him, in many cases you in fact are laughing with them at their own jokes.

I initiallly thought Dane's looks were something keeping him from being more popular. Vince Vaugn and Owen Wilson are also pretty attractive, and sometimes Ben Stiller and Will Farrell can be cute.

It seems like dumb vain jockish duders like them because they identify, and girls like them because they're more comfortable liking someone like that because they feel like, since they're a comedian and self deprecating, that it compensates for their fear that they're totally shallow.

The Notorious LOL
01-06-2006, 03:09 AM
yeah but generally the sound effects tend to be variants on the different styles he uses to jerk off, then he tends to go off on a 4 to 5 minute tangent about jerking off. Switches it up to something about disliking bees or something, revert back to jerking off, talk about something from childhood, jerking off.

I think its mostly his approach I find annoying. He sort of reminds me of some kind of asshole sales representative for a slightly upscale company. A real GO GETTER type.

Maybe I just dont identify with the shit he talks about. Hes got some bit about like "y'know how everyones got that one friend in their circle of friends everyone just HATES?" and I think to myself "no, I dont know that one friend...I guess I dont have that shallow of relationships, sorry Dane, I wasnt your target audience with that one". I can see some people definetly having a laugh riot with that one though, because they do have that empty of friendships that to them thats hilarious because its so true.

yeah, but then he has that thing about how the bathrooms in clubs are all beat up and the doors are hanging off and he imitates someone running into the bathroom and jumping and kicking in the stall door and he's actually running and jumping and kicking. that made me laugh. but that was like 5 years ago when he wasn't famous. that makes me the coolest.

knowing of a mediocre comedian 5 years prior to becoming anyone worth a damn doesnt mean anything.

I seen this dude a couple weeks ago with some pretty serious ass Cerebal Palsy that was funny. Josh Blue or something like that. I talked with him after his set and apparently hes opening for some other comedian Ive never heard of but hes a paid comedian. His bit consisted of a few "hey note that Im handicapped" jokes but it wasnt his whole shtick so it was effective. Had he referenced it the entire time, like I suspect he might do in longer sets, it would get old.

Why do people laugh automatically when you remind them of something they haven't thought about in a while? I do, I laugh, I don't know why. I think it's more of a laugh of surprise and recognition than of amusement, but a laugh's a laugh.

I don't find his delivery or his material to be the slightest bit amusing. He's the comedic equivalent of that guy at every bar on a friday night who's all loud and obnoxious and slapstick because if he wasn't, you might catch on to the fact that he's saying absolutely nothing of relevance. I hate that guy.

See, that's exactly how I'd describe Robin William's stand up routine.

He just says the same shit over and over in different voices until someone laughs.

I've found some of his bits - particularly the ones about Catholic mass and working at Burger King - absolutely hilarious. Then a few others I haven't found quite so funny...like the one about the blow job in the car. Maybe guys appreciate that one more, I don't know.
I think that he does have some good material, like in the examples I mentioned. His delivery helps make that good stuff really funny. He probably does rely on his loud, hyper delivery to make some fairly unimpressive material seem funny too, though. And it obviously works with a lot of people.

what the hell is all this...oh the material is just not impressive crap? there is humor in some of the simpliest most mundane things. there's not reason why comedy has to be intellectual.

again, one of life's little mysteries is what makes a person laugh. it's different for everyone.

this makes me sad.

i think we should have a thread where we all suggest better beer choices for bigblu to try. i'm fairly certain he's willing to try anything once, as he seems to have that sort of jovial, easy going personality from what i've seen in his photos.

I agree that there is humor in the mundane and that simplicity can be the best approach to humor. But standup comedians should possess some quality that sets them apart from other comedians, and other people in general, for that matter. If I wanted to watch an average dumbass flail about like a retard while telling me his feelings about urinals, I'd date the Kappa Sigma Phi treasurer and hang out with him on a friday night while he pumps himself full of Miller High Life. Standup comedy is a performance art, and without SOME level of originality in a comedian's approach, delivery, or material, I'm not interested. It's not about intelligence as much as it is about creativity.

there was some really funny bits, the guy being hit by a car looking like eddie gordo in tekken when someone doesnt know the moves and just hits the buttons. or bout shooting a guy in the chest with a super-man t-shirt on, and when his chest starts bleeding going "i guess not".

oh and the bit bout having trapdoors and secret tunnels in his dream house.

pretty funny.
