What would you be like?
I would either be the best boss in the world or my buisness would fail because I'm not authoritarian enough.
I would probably pay all my workers hourly. I wouldn't care if people showed up late, as long as they understood I was keeping track and they wouldn't get paid for hours they didn't work. Basically I wouldn't care what my employees did or how they got thier work done as long as it got done otherwise they're outta there. I would require that they give excellent customer service and always be polite..but that's about it.
if possible and appropriate, our office would have a break room with a pool table, a pin ball machine and a keg-er-ator. ( I've known a few advertising execs and that's seriously what thier break rooms were like. seen it with me own eyes I have!)

What about Charles in Charge?
If I were the boss, the receptionist would be giving more notice than 15 minutes that she's going snowboarding and needs "coverage".

i'd make full use of torturing machines and physical threats.

i never liked charles...
but really...i would probably be pretty loose too. i am an avid supporter of the 6 hour work day, because, evidence of this board shows that nobody works all of those 8 hours. so i figure, if you only require 6 hours of work time, and provide a wide enough range, then people would be happier and more productive.
as far as break room goes, i have been to places with free pop machines, and one had a bumper pool table. those would definetly be nice in some regards.
and the design of my office would be based on the lighting. because the better the lights, the better you work

I was just thinking.....
It would depend on what type of buisness I ran. If I was managing my own Event Planing business, I would have to be alot less flexible and force my employees to stick to a schedule. In event planning there's no room for droping the ball, things have to get done or the event will fail miserably. I still wouldn't be a nazi, but the employees would have to communicate alot more of what they were working on so I could be sure the event would be a sucess.

i'd make sure they weren't into posting on message boards.
Not to mention Pizza Fridays!
Let me guess - your receptionist would have to use her credit card?

I would be extremely leniant when it comes to dress code, but keep it cool as far as language in the office. 10 minutes late isn't gonna make the company bankrupt immediately, so it's cool, but if it happens more often than not, you're fired, but not before an hour of humiliation in front of your collegues (that hour is paid though).

at my old job, the secretary who sat right by me had the company credit card number on a post it stuck up by her desk. that way she could go and order things for lunch meetings whenever she needed. if i had half a brain, i could have borrowed the number a few times...

but will you allow free style?
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

Did you say having A PINBALL MACHINE ! (y) I'll work my balls off for that sorta perk.
i'd be tough but fair, and my employees would do unflattering impersonations of me behind my back. i'd pretend not to know about it, let them have their fun, i'm a jerk, it's true, but i expect a fair day's work out of my people, that's what i'm paying them for, not so they can get high and make out in the stock room goddamnit
a keg-er-ator.
seriously. what is that?

I'd hire people I like and fire people I don't. People who annoy me would be required to run my errands.

I don't think anyone should be the boss of anyone... I think that all of us should teach each other how to lead a better life... if you know something beneficial for mankind's search for peace and happiness, please share with the rest of the class (humanity)...
besides I've always been a follower... I guess if I were the boss, I'd be the boss of myself... I really need direction and leadership... I'm the only one that can do that :o

If I was a boss I'd make everyone take part in a mid-morning dance off battle and the prize would be the rest of the day off

Same here, I've never really been a leader myself. I'm not a very independent person either (n) Gotta toughen up I do!!

I've turned it down because I wouldn't like it. No one can live up to my standards. I would be a total bitch. My bosses would be fine with that, but I couldn't live that way. Last time they asked me, I threatened to quit.

I run a well oiled machine that can only be compared to Dignan's leadership skills in Bottle Rocket (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115734/)
