My Mom listens to classical radio and goes to the Seattle Symphony, my Dad is extremely narrow-minded on his musical taste, he likes two kinds of music, Country and Western, pre 1980 only. I kid you not. Buck and Merle...and maybe a few who others who got out of Bakersfield CA.

I think combined my parents may own 15-20 CD's. Books is their scene. At one time they had a few hundred albums...but those rarely were played and are now gone. But books are everywhere at the parents house.

They rage against the machine with the printed word.

It was just mom and me:
Beatles -- she had every album and I know the words to most songs.
She loves Elvis.
Blues like Etta James, Sarah Vaughn. I think she has an old Leadbelly 78, too.

My Mom played Billy Joel all the time. I find myself whistling or humming his music or trying to work out the tune on my piano, and I don't even really like his music, aside from Movin' Out.

I guess I've been brainwashed.

Elvis
Just curious on this MarsD. Did any of that rub off onto you? Bc late last year I saw the video to Suspicious Minds and loved it~Hell the drummer had a double bass long before that was fashionable. Since I was never really introduced to any of his music but knew that I wasn't a big fan of his early works, I bought Gold Vol. 5, which has the songs in the twilight of his career. Truth be told there are only 3 songs worth listening to. Suspicious Minds, Kentucky Rain~which Eddie Rabbitt wrote, and In the Ghetto.

My uncle gave me a Neil Diamond cassette for Christmas when I was 12 and I hated it at the time but just recently got into that. But he's, by far, a better live performer than studio musician~Which is a rarety in itself. Recently, I've been looking for his Hot August Night to no avail.

As for me: It went from quasi cool to not this shit again to thank God for Sony inventing the headphones.
As a young lad the 8 tracks and cassettes included
Fleetwood Mac~ Rumours
Seals and Crofts ~ Greatest Hits
Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
Rod Stewart ~ Blondes have more Fun
K.C. & the Sunshine Band
Carol King ~ whose got some hot tracks
Chicago
The Eagles
Beach Boys
Bill Withers
The 5th Dimension
and my dad even had that Herb Albert record displayed in the SYR video
and they listened to a radio station that played everything from disco to top 40; but never rock

Then it got bad 80 's Adult Contemporary. Thanks to bootleg cassettes from the flea market I had to endure the likes of
Carly Simon
Anne Murray
Air Supply
Ricky Nelson
Jim Reeves~to reminence I speculate
However, Solid Gold was their pipeline as to the status of Top 40 music and there were some exceptions that fell through the cracks that they liked

To worse....early 80's country
Mickey Gilley
Ricky Scaggs
John Conlee
the guy that wrote Swingin'
and that other hick that wrote Honky Tonkin'
though I could handle some of the tracks laid out by that Burt Reynolds partner in crime in the Smokey and the Bandit movies

To worst
Adult Contemporary Christian Music bc a radio station opened that solely played that genre of music.
The no talent hacks I can remember off the top of my head would include but aren't limited to
Amy Grant
Petra
Carmen
and that's all I can remember bc by then I tuned out of that swag thanks to having a walkman. That was right around the time I got pretty heavy into Van Halen~which was right before 1984 dropped.

You should really check the cover by Nick Cave to this song. A true dark-80s masterpiece.

Truth be told there are only 3 songs worth listening to. Suspicious Minds, Kentucky Rain~which Eddie Rabbitt wrote, and In the Ghetto. Definitely. Elvis was a much better live performer, too. His early 70's live albums were great. He does this version of "Are you lonsome tonight" which is hilarious. Also, live, he sings many songs with more of a blues arrangement than the pop stuff you usually here. Look for some live albums or even a live DVD of his Vegas performances.

I was always a fan of his version of "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Jail House Rock".

Elvis also led me to Johnny Cash.

I never much cared for Neil Diamond's stuff.

I was 16 when Van Halen's 1984 came out!

I am not sure about the dad, he didn't live with us. I know he now like Roy Orbison and Celine Dion. A lot.

Mom: Carole King, Carly Simon, and Fleetwood Mac are the ones I can remember her playing the most, some Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand.

The earliest musical memory I have is liking "That's the Stuff that Dreams are Made of."

I never much cared for Neil Diamond's stuff.

I was 16 when Van Halen's 1984 came out!

1st up: I didn't "get" Neil Diamond til I saw Saving Silverman~it played late one night on not even one of the movie channels and once it started I saw who was in it I stuck through the whole affair. It was witty at best but when I heard his songs played throughout the movie then at the end when he performed I was sold. But like you stated earlier, yeah, my early memories of his music was when I was a wee lad in the waiting room of the local spinepoppin' snakeoil salesman known as the Chiropractor~I wasn't a fan either. I don't know about you but if you hear it again maybe it won't sound so bad. Plus I went to his Myspace and his Hot August Night LP got mates much play and they are singing his glory and praises. I know I know~we're married and happy but notice on the Sure Shots threads who puts up his 12 songs CD as purchases. I think Neil may have as they say the mojo and his live music is worth a listen.

2nd up: You were 16 when 1984 came out eh? I believe it actually came out in late 83, which made me 11. At any rate, yep we're old but still cool  What your favorite Dynamite Dave LP...Me "Fair Warning" was their coup de force and Sunday Afternoon in the Park was the cats ass seque to One Foot Out the Door was Dave at his best

My dad was a music freak. He had amazing jazz and swing records. In later years, he enjoyed the Who for some reason, and Bob Dylan. This was when he was in his 60s.

P.S. In the 70s, my dad looked just like Charlie Rich and was often mistaken for him at hotels.

Dad: I have no clue.
