I'm curious what some of you have to say. What is the best film of all time? Not your favorite film, but what you consider the best film.
....I haven't made a new thread in a while. May as well be good.

I hated it because I was forced into it, but Vertigo probably.
If only for the details in it.

Look at cinematography, look at themes, look at the acting, and then formulate an idea pointing towards something unbiased (as in not just good because you like it) and roll with it.

there's far too many elements involved....and too much criteria to be considered, you could never say "yes, thats it, the best film"

I'm even willing to except Fast Times at Ridgemont High

It's easy to pick a great film out of all the shitty ones out there, but there's no such thing as a best one.

I never seem to like the "best" films people in the know select. I quit being a movie freak about 5 years ago, but prior to that I'd seen all the classics.
The only one I have always loved is Singing in the Rain, and even that has parts I want to fast forward through (where the ballerina comes in to dance with Gene Kelly for no reason). But it has a few of the best scenes ever.

Lord of War is a masterpiece
I saw it as a double feature 1st seeing Saw II then that. And when I left something about that picture stayed with me. First off I would like to say that I abhor Nicholas Cage but am a huge Jared Leto fan; so I quess it came out in the wash. My friend gave me the bootleg DVD a couple of nights ago and saw it again this time I was able to read the subtitles bc when I saw it at the movies it was all in thai~and needless to say the ending subtitles about "The US, UK, France, Russia, and China are the 5 biggest arms dealers and then adding that they all have permanent seats on the UN Security Council" was the money shot.
Not just that though. I thought it was an interesting character study how everyone draws a line in the sand of what they see as ethically they will or will not do and how time/$ blurs the lines. At the end he was morally bankrupt but made no excuses. Great 1 liners too~ My favorite at this moment would be when he went legit and said something to the effect of fuck it! the profit margins are too small; If it's legal everyone else is doing it. Brilliant and spot on. I also loved how it wasn't the typical Hollywood ending. He lost it all but wasn't dead or in jail and kept doing what he loved and was good at.
Also some side trivia: That movie had no financing from any of studio in the US. And was a composite of 5 arms dealers.
The only thing that suspended my disbelief was that he lived in the US...Bc what kind of nut would be in that line of work there? Plus it made it seem too easy of a business to get into. And Coke with Gunpowder is something I've never heard of much less tried...so whose got the coke and lets get this started
Lord of War was very good. had a bit of everything.
and yeah, the last subtitle text thing about the 5 countries.. that took me a few minutes to get but... (y)

A lot of people being anal about this. I read "best film of all time' to mean "my favourite film of all time"
For me it's joint between Amelie and Fight Club. If I had to pick one it would be Amelie.

I always found the Kubrick films '2001 a Space Odyssey' and The Shining to both be examples of spectacular cinematography. So I would probably say one of those two and I would lean towards 2001

Objectively: the best movie so far?
Yikes.
So: on the basis of pure construction and lack of flaws?
I'd say it's either
Aguirre, the Wrath of God or Goodfellas.
Citizen Kane is probably the best, most nutty, giddy, holy-shit-I-get-to-make-a-movie movie (only Goodfellas can touch it), but the Rosebud flaw does really hurt as far as perfection goes.
Keaton's The General almost qualifies, except that it takes a little long to get rolling. Once it does, it's almost mathematic in its construction. Just a superb movie.
I think you could make a great case for The Purple Rose of Cairo, Diner, or Fargo, also.

The Godfather Part 1
That bit in the restaurant where he comes out of the toilets and he's sitting there with the gun and he sort of zones out and all you hear is the screeching of a train going past before he suddenly gets up and shoots them both. That scene is fucking sick. It's like the cherry on the cake in terms of the film's excellent directing.
My favourite film is probably Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction though. (y)

Fight Club - although its one of them where the suprise loses a bit second time round
Shawshank Redemption

American History X - dark but ace
Trainspotting - Crackin'
Pulp Fiction - got everything that film

the stand bye, critics-choice answers would include Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind....
as these were the first great epics from a new medium.....
if i had to pick more modern, trendy (but great) films...broken down into genre's:
romance: Annie Hall, High Fidelity, Jerry Maguire, Chasing Amy
drama: Rocky, Pulp Fiction, Resevior Dogs, BraveHeart, Shawshank Redemption, Deer Hunter
Action: Aliens, Fight Club, Ninja Scroll, LOTR, Star Wars saga, Indiana Jones trilogy
Thriller: Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Signs, Jaws
Comedy (way too subjective): Anchorman, 40 yr old virgin, Team America.

hmm...
horror : psycho, the exorcist, the shining, texas chainsaw massacre, halloween, the ring (japan)
abcdefz
01-12-2006, 01:17 PM
The Exorcist is a good choice.
Psycho would be perfect if not for the kind of dragged-out denouement at the end where the psychiatrist "explains" everything.
Hitch's perfect movie might be North by Northwest. If Farley Granger had been better, it might be Strangers on a Train.
God, Robert Walker was good in that. Hitch's daughter, too -- Peggy? Patricia?

I think my favorite Keaton full-length movie is probably Our Hospitality; but The General is just a masterpiece of construction. You can practically diagram that movie.
