post some inventions of the past year that are truly remarkable
the life straw (http://www.lifestraw.com) allows the roughly 1 billion people in this world the ability to access water suitable for drinking.
the small polystyrene tube filters the water before you consume it, and will last for roughly 1 year (700 liters)
this could reduce the amount of waterbone diseases significantly, and is pretty amazing (y)

since nobody else wants to participate...
the env bike (http://www.envbike.com/) is a full purpose motorcycle that runs on a fuel cell. its emissions are clean, and it runs on a tank of hydrogen gas for roughly 100 miles. top speed is around 50 mph
pretty cool that they finally have a vehicle running on the fuel cell. the only downside to this now is there arent many places that refuel hydrogen tanks

that is an extremely important invention (y)
here's another possibly lifesaving invention: skin cell printing (http://www.livescience.com/technology/050201_skin_printing.html)

That's really cool. I wish I had something to contribue but I haven't heard of anything that was invented last year that is worthy.

it would be creepy if you could print out skin on your home PC
i wonder if you would need resume paper for that?
BGirl
01-11-2006, 10:31 AM
yeah I don't think you'd be able to do it at home.. :)
resume paper... as in heavyweight, cotton paper with a laid texture?
paper is a big part of my life.. you'd be amazed how many kinds there are
speaking of paper, a new kind of waterproof paper (http://news.com.com/Making+paper+waterproof--and+writable/2100-1008_3-5823337.html) was invented last year, and strides are being made with electronic paper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_paper) as well

Just use a tiny net. A tiny net is a death sentence.

Buh, F fuel cells, it's all about biodiesel.

That straw and bike are great! Thanks for bringing those to my attention, Pete!
A friend of mine used to deal with polluted waters at reservations and it turned out there's this energy drink powder here in Sweden that was really good to clean up the water so the kids wouldn't get tummyache and she tried to get the company support some African water projects, but nooo, they wanted to make big bucks instead.
Also when I was studying in the middle of nowhere in a village nearby there was this guy who'd made his car run on steam. Sometimes he'd go and tease the people at the gas station, pulled in, put another log in and waved off! :D

biodiesel is cool too, but i saw a think on how they convert the ocoking oils, and it would be hard for a regular person to produce the amount needed

Who said we'd be doing it ourselfs. Saw a Dirty Jobs episode on it, didn't look anymore difficult than a high school chemistry lab.
But making it ourselfs isn't really the optiminum result, rather it being produced cheaply. Hell look what state of the art gas refiniries can create, cheap as shit gas, why not cheaper than cheap as shit biodiesel. It would be insane, 40MPG cars and only cents for each gallon of biodiesel... Insane.

yeah, i mean the process isnt difficult, but i meant if you were to do it for yourself, it would be a pain...
i do believe it could be mass produced and sold for next to nothing. who wants to go into business and sell 40 gallon drums of this shit to people?

I think there is businesses that do that here. I've seen something on the telly about re-cycling cooking oil, but pity it's been quite a while since I saw it so can't remember what they did with it. It was quite clever anyway. Wish I'd remember...

You can use sea sponges, they can be boiled and used over and over again.
