Righto - sorry - am a bit lazy when it comes to reading threads before i joined. I just wanted to share with everyone the fact that i DL wonderwall by the beasties and thought it was bloody awful. Think i've got some reading to do before i start making threads! :) :o

I don't care if this is a rethread of another thread with a variant topic that coincides with multiple topics within the popular culture rappper message board medium, but this needs to be said,

Let's face it:

The all-time greatest cover version is probably Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect."

Even Otis Redding reportedly said, "Damn! That girl stole my song!"

I've never disliked his singing cos the musics too good and he only need to shout along with a lot of it cos his guitar was doing all sorts of mad shit!

I've heard Jesus Jones do Voodoo Chile - electronic style - took all the guitars out coz they did'nt have the bollocks to try and copy that solo but its still ok(for Jesus Jones!)

...yeah... his pitifully lazy singing has actually been a big hurdle for me. I can listen to some people with poor instruments sing if they can do it with conviction (Lou Reed, Bob Dylan); but I have a hard time with people -- good or bad pipes -- who just flat-out sing badly, even if their music is good (Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young)...

...actually Neil can sing a bit; I just can't take that voice.

I can imitate it really well, though. :D

I dont think it matters whether people can sing or not as long as they're not too out of tune and have an interesting voice - there's loads of voices that arent technically good but suit their songs really well and as long as the musics good i think that makes a good song.

Shaun ryder - Cant sing for shit - Happy Mondays have made some great records - STEP ON - great cover version

Ian Brown (Stone Roses) - Well produced voice - cracking tunes - awful singing live

David Byrne - Can sing but its his own style and thats what makes it interesting

There's loads more like Dylan etc

...are you a guitarist, by any chance? Just curious. The guy who was guitarist in my old band liked Jimi's singing, too; it's so throwaway that it doesn't compete with his guitar playing at all.

Thats the whole point - it doesnt compete with his guitar playing! Its just something to take you along for the ride whilst you listen to his guitar and the groove - A stronger voice might take the shine off some of his tunes - his voice was his guitar (pretentious>moi?) - at least he did sound like he meant what he was singing.

...see, I think so much of his singing wasn't convincing. Isn't that funny? Too completely different reads. To me, he sounded like he wanted to sound too cool to care about his singing or lyrics...

Eric Clapton sounds like that every now and again, but generally he carries it all right.

Both Clapton & Hendrix may have sounded like they didnt give a shit at times but I have a feelin that's got summat to do with substances inside them. Maby as well - the stuff they were doing on geetar was too much for the brain to cope with to be able to sing ok!

I have major issues with Clapton - I think he has pretty much under achieved for a long time - he has made some good stuff - but I think a man that talented could have done a lot better

I think so, too. Obviously, he's made more albums than I have, but...

Lou Reed did this, too. Dylan, too. Where they just kind of cranked out these day-job albums. Neil Young's done some kind of poor stuff, but I never had the impression he was phoning it in.

the thing with hendrix was he never thought he could sing, he didn't like doing it at all, very conscious of it so maybe thats why it comes across that way. it wasn't about sounding cool he just lacked confidence in his voice. i think despite all the guitar burning, amp fucking, teeth playing he was quite shy really :)

i love his voice tho, especially on have you ever been (to electric ladyland)
