so, I say to this girl, "hey, I like your shirt." and she says, "oh thanks, but I just got it at H&M, I didn't make it like you made your outfit." and I said, "well, I'm poor and I just look in magazines and try to make stuff, if I could buy it, I would." she says, "well, I just buy things."

okay.

it was a nice shirt. that's alls I'm sayin. chicks man.

She probably thought you were attempting to step to her or something. Or maybe she was tryin' to step to you, man. Either way, it sounds like she was offended by something... so screw that.

i did sort of the same thing when a friend of mine complimented this awesome never worn swiss army sweater i got for $5 at a thrift stop. He said "nice sweater" and I responded, "got it for $5 at a thrift shop." i think i felt sort of fancy to be wearing this like $100 sweater and had to point out that im not really that fancy. i would be if i had more than $5

I think in her way she was just trying to give you a compliment in return. My guess is that she thinks it rather skilled and clever of you to have the ability to make your own stuff, something which doesn't know how to do, but it just came out sounding funny.

Even if I had Bill Gates money I wouldn't spend 75 bucks on a sweater.

Who the hell shops at H&M anyway?? Or who the hell wants to for that matter. Its like the same shirt in every color....pick one.

Sarky....keep making your clothes. She's just a snobby biotch who wishes she had as much sassyness as you to pull off wearing her own creations.

H&M in the US must be vastly different from H&M in London then. I go there LOTS; they usually have loads of good stuff, and 'cheap as chips' as they say over 'ere.

Photos are up. I'm not an alias.

You should know though that the biggest scam on the internet is posting pics of people that aren't you, but pretending that they are you... People will still be skeptical...

I do

H&M is my favourite shop. it's cheap and the clothes are very nice! There are a lot shirts with prints too. and a blanco shirt is nice too in my opinion.

A lot of people can't take compliments, period, and make apologies or get self-deprecating or just deflect the compliment altogether. I find myself doing it, sometimes, and am trying to train myself to just say "thanks" and let it go at that.

There's a pretty good story about that sort of thing.

I think H&M has some alright clothes. I got a lovely dress there. the shirt the girl was wearing was a very cute black blouse with lacy bits. I can't recall exactly. the stuff they have at the smaller store downtown is crap, you have to go to the one with 3 floors on michigan ave to find anything worthwhile.

ms. peachy is probably right. the girl probably just can't take a compliment. I used to be like that, but now I just say, "thank you". unless I feel the need to compliment them on something that I specifically like....otherwise it's meaningless.

like one time, in the bathroom at a bar, Cort says to some girl, "hey, I like your outift" and the girl said, "oh, umm, thanks, I like your outfit too." and acted all awkward. she didn't really like cort's outfit, she just felt like she had to say it.

unless that's just basic manners...I don't know. it makes me not want to say anything at all! jerks.

i don't think the girl was a snob, i think she probably felt sarky was a snob. lots of people think it's probably more expensive and quite indulgent to make your own clothes.

not me personally yo, but hey, that's the way i know a lot of people think towards art-school-types-who-make-their-clothes-and-drink-herbal-tea around here. cos there is a shatload of them in the west end of glasgow. i'm not putting you in this category s, of course, just reporting from my vast knowledge when i was on campus

I don't know how to make clothes really. I just alter things I get from the thrift store. they usually only involve cutting, pinning and tying, with minimal sewing.

anyway, I don't think she was being a snob either, I think she just has low self-esteem.

This could be it. When you paid her the compliment, were you giving her the crazy eyes? Did you say it without opening your mouth, just sort of through your teeth? Were you rolling your shoulders back and cracking your neck to each side?

I have this weird thing where if someone compliments me on something I'm wearing and asks if it's new, I always say no. Even if it's my first time wearing it. Something about people knowing I'm wearing something brand new makes me feel kinda awkward.

or that you only look good in new shit. i do the same thing.

I do the same thing, and I say "I just don't wear it often."

I assume that if someone is watching me that closely, then she must really think that I need new clothes.

ahhh, fuck it you know? Men are the same way.

I was in the public restroom taking a piss and there was a man next to me that was perfectly straight that said, "hey man, nice dick." I told him thanks, I'm part salamander and that my other one was chopped off during a skateboarding incident and that I'm glad that it actually happened cause it minimized these conversations to about 3 seconds.

Well, good to my luck, he had already left the bathroom when I mentioned I was part salamander.

I give compliments a lot out to other girls when I like their clothes or something. They are always happy, give a big (seemingly genuine) smile and say thank you to me. I guess that's a good thing?
