Keep 'em dumb, keep 'em scared

FOR SOME REASON, the BBC sometimes airs a news bulletin from ABC on its 24-hour news service late at night. This may be safe enough, as most impressionable young Brits will be long asleep before the programme airs, but you wonder whether this might be seen as an endorsement of the news service from the venerable Beeb when viewed in other time zones.

Mostly the phenomenon is informative - in a back-handed sort of way. And we can giggle and squirm at the false sincerity of it all, as Bob hands over to 'Libby' who introduces 'Brad' and they all seem to indulge in some aural mutual masturbation.

Like news in the best kingdoms, the bulletin last night opened on what George W had been up to that day, before turning to the central story, the fact that 'untraceable' cell phones were on sale in some places and that some folks had actually bought some.

Of course, this is scary because those buying up these phones in bulk were almost certainly terrorists. You can buy these phones with cash and just disappear with them, warned our on-the-spot reporter from outside a Wal-Mart, or something like it -- it was late, so forgive my recall.

Then on-the-spot Brad (let's call him) hands back to gleaming (w)anchorman Bob, who utters something to the effect of: "Wow Brad, that sure is scary."

Scary indeed. Scary that some purported independent news service can serve up such drivel.

First up, let's point out that the cell phones themselves aren't untraceable. The calls can be listened to and monitored like those on any other cell phone, and the location of the caller traced to an individual cell. It's just the owner of the phone who is untraceable since he does not have to prove his identity to the vendor when buying the handset.

So these folk can chat away to their mates all day long and the snoops won't actually know who it is who is doing the talking. How scary is that?

And a word or two on the war on terror. It's a myth. In reality the war is between George and his mates and what he calls the 'American People'. Keep 'em dumb, keep 'em scared and keep 'em down, could be his motto.

And, while we're at it, America is a continent, as my Mexican mate used to tell me. So Mexicans, Peruvians Guatemalans and Brazilians are all Americans. So stick that in your rolled up dollar bill and snort it. ยต

I think this may actually refer to criminal gangs (and groups related to Al Qaida) who use either mobile phones or computer chips in what is (un)commonly known as Carousel Fraud. It's a very effective way of making a lot of money in a very short space of time, by several companies who are set up for the purpose of the fraud buying the phones (or chips) from each other, and claiming back the VAT on each purchase. The purchase price rises with each company the product is sold to, until the goods are sold back to the company who originally sold them. The process then starts all over again, until the authorities find out, then the companies disappear virtually overnight.

If it wasn't about this at all, never mind.
The groups that run this sort of scam are usually also involved in other illegal activity...anything from illegally importing tobacco, to human trafficking, to terrorist activities.
