I wonder how it makes the members of The Stones, The Pretty Things, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Sonics and even Sabbath, Zeppelin and The Stooges feel, knowing they never produced a song more obnoxious, loud, thick, abrasive and heavy than this, and that they were outdone by a dork like Paul McCartney, of all people.

Hendrix came very close with Voodoo Child (though it was actually released before Helter Skelter), but even that had moments where the noise let up for a few seconds here and there.

The song may be a little contrived and planned out, yeah. And I could also do without the third fade-in, but if it just doesn't do anything for you, you're either deaf or you're dead.

I'm sure this will shock a lot of you classic music lovers out there, but I've only heard the Oasis version (y)

it's a decent song but it undeservedly benefits from the myth surrounding it and the Beatles.

Yeah, but it's loud. Even if it just sucked, it'd still be loud.

I first heard it when I was 8 about 25 years ago and it scared the pants off me but i thought it was ace and i didnt know anything about the Manson stuff till i was a lot older . That myth takes something away from the song not the other way round.

I went looking for lyrics and found this nice Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helter_Skelter) summary.

I was immediately thinking Sonic Youth could do the duty, but even they let up on the gas here and there.

Plus the cool thing is Yer Blues is on the same side as that tune. I just watched the Rolling Stones Circus DVD last week and John Lennon plays 'Yer Blues with Keith Richards on Bass, Mitch Mitchell on Drums and Eric Clapton on Lead Guitar..... (y) :D ....it's pretty, pretty, good.

Motley Crue covered it. U2 covered it.

Both bands couldn't outdo the original.

I don't like the white album, but I love that song. It is funny that it was written by the mastermind behind Michelle (worst beatles song/maybe worst song of the 60s).

Is that any good? I've only seen The Who's part in a Who movie. I've had that DVD in my hand about five times. I used to be such a Stones freak.

From Wiki;
During the July 18, 1968 sessions, a version of Helter Skelter lasting 27 minutes and 11 seconds was recorded, although this version is rather slow and hypnotic, differing greatly from the volume and rawness of the album version. That would be cool to hear.

I rate Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus a 7 out of 10. Wildly uneven, John Lennon's 'Yer blues is Brilliant. Watching Brian Jones is painful, knowing how devastated he is and that he would be out of the band and dead within a half of a year doesn't help.

Of course the Who have a great show, but it's Mick Jagger who pulls out the best performance with his possesed take on the not yet released "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and a manic "Sympathy for the Devil".

It's good enough to rent, (y) .

Helter Skelter is fuckin ace, and Paul McCartney is far from being a dork. He's done stuff in his life the rest of us can only dream of....

Hey, there's a tune I haven't listen to in quite a while. I should do that. Thanks, Mike.

No, Macca is a huge dork. Look no further than Honey Pie or Maxwell's Silver Hammer for further conclusive evidence of this fact.

Doc, I'd probably nominate Good Night or The Long And Winding Road for greatest Beatles atrocities over Michelle. Although, I can't stand that song either.

peachy, if you're gonna listen to it off of the White album, let it keep playing through to the next song. Long, Long, Long is such a perfect contrasting tune.

McCartney is ,technically, rubbish. One of the main reasons he worte such good tunes for the Beatles was that he was competing with Lennon, in some cases trying to sound like Lennon and they split up and what happened - thrity years of complete arse. The fuckin frog chorus being the ultimate travesty. I can only think of a couple of Wings tunes that are ok, Live and Let die is about the best thing he did after the beatles.

and Siouxsie and the Banshees covered it. And that is scary!!!

both U2's and Oasis versions are really boring compared to the original!

Technically, McCartney is excellent. His post-Beatles stuff could def be better. He had some clangers like the frog thing, but Lennon was pretty uninspired after 72 or so himself. McCartney's song Coming Up was said by Lennon to have influenced him back into recording Double Fantasy. He still had tonnes of great songs, and his last album has reached many end of year best-of polls. Its actually very good.

But y'know it doesn't have to be Lennon Vs. McCartney, they both influenced each other. I just happen to think McCartney is underrated and Lennon is overrated, but they're pretty close.

my gay roommate went to an aerosmith concert where they covered this song. he's a big aerosmith fan but he hates the beatles, so he'd never heard it before, he thought he'd heard a new aerosmith song, he was all excited. then he got crushed. sweet

Every single cover of it sucks ass. It just doesn't work. It's like trying to cover Rebel Without A Pause.
