I cant wait for this..

Ive heard 3 songs...
"Be Easy" top notch..Pete Rock. yadda yadda. But is it gonna be on it?
"Back Like That" cant make my mind up bout this. Its pretty good. Someone described it as a much better "Never been the same again". Could do without the pretty boy rap-n-bullshit.
"Charlie Brown" (MF Doom prod.) HOLY FUCK. only heard a wee snipped..but fuck me. Top class.

and the cover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/kris_stivers/ghostface.jpg)
is brilliant.

i nicked this from mickills post in the "kilo's" thread...

Fishscale's uncut raw coke.

No, weight's just large quantities, like when it's sold or bought by the key. You're talking about cut powder, though. Raw coke is different, it's not the same texture. It's not even white. It actually looks like ground up fish scales. And it's usually not sold in that form.

Despite rarely being mentioned amid “best rappers alive” rumblings, Ghostface has yet to release anything but acclaimed hip-hop since his 1996 solo debut, Ironman. Even when Wu-Tang releases started failing to find an audience, Ghost put the Clan on his back and kept the crew relevant with 2000’s seminal disc Supreme Clientele. Possessing a unique pedigree of prose (i.e. “Ayo, this rappin’s like ziti, facin’ me real TV/Crash at high speeds, strawberry kiwi”) and unbridled lyrical passion, he is the reigning king of consistency. Inexplicably, though, the Staten Islander’s tunes tend to excite critics more than consumers. After treading more accessible waters with 2004’s kinder and gentler disc, The Pretty Toney Album, Starks takes it back to his Killah roots with his fifth solo platter, Fishscale.

Clan connoisseurs will find comfort in “9 Milli Bros.,” a colossal posse cut featuring all of the Clansmen—including ODB and the return of Ghost’s longtime partner in rhyme Raekwon, who appears four times here as opposed to not at all last time around. The duo rekindles that classic Cuban Linx chemistry on the cocaine instructional “Kilo” and “R.A.G.U.,” an intense crime saga heightened by chilling strings and bells. Bullet-ridden narratives continue on the captivating “Shakey Dog,” where Ghost stages a botched heist over Lewis Parker’s horn-heavy Blaxploitation soundtrack with scene-setting detail: “Three fuckin’ maricones on the couch, watching Sanford & Son/Passing they rum, fried plantains and rice/Big rounds of onions on the T-bone steak/My stomach growling, Yo, I want some!”

Surprisingly, Ghost’s return to a darker sound doesn’t include the RZA. In his place is a crop of subterranean track masters. The most prominent being underground poster boy MF Doom, whose avant-garde replacement of Bobby Digital’s sonic grit is triumphant. Collaborating on five cuts, Ghost and Doom mesh like dust brothers from another. Metal Face’s hypnotic flutes and wave sound effects anchor “Underwater,” Tony’s bugged-out aquatic fantasy, complete with “mermaids with Halle Berry haircuts” and “SpongeBob in the Bentley coupé, banging the Isleys.” Their combined excellence continues on the acid-trip symphony “Charlie Brown” and the body-dropping “Clips of Doom,” a murder-gram ripe with piercing electric guitars and Ghost’s vivid violence: “Put two cutter mirrors replacing the eyes/So when the cops come they’ll see themselves, they all gonna die.”

Lightening up for a moment, Toney turns his attention toward estrogen for “Big Girl,” where the Pretty One sweet-talks shorties with his signature peculiarity. Later he waxes parental atop J Dilla’s subdued guitar lift on “Strap,” a candid reflection about today’s wayward parental discipline. “Nowadays kids don’t get beat/They get big treats, fresh pair of sneaks/Punishments is like, Here, have a seat.”
Unfortunately, Ghost Deini succumbs to commercial pressure. Amid the shadowy production scope of the album, the love-gone-bad R&B number “Back Like That” featuring Ne-Yo feels out of place. Equally confusing is the head-scratching “3 Bricks,” which awkwardly combines Ghost and Rae with Notorious B.I.G.’s “Somebody’s Gotta Die” vocals. Produced by Cool & Dre, the track seems better suited for Biggie’s slapdash Duets.
With a few forced collaborations being its only flaw, Fishscale is Ghost’s most addictive dosage post Supreme Clientele. Packed with vivid street tales, comic relief and straight spittin’, the album continues his standard of excellence. Now if only consistency equaled power. If it did, Ghostface would be king. —MATT BARONE

i know it's the next step in the cherchez (sp?) la ghost ladder but it doesn't touch it for me, but you're right it's still really good, homo erotic imagery and all

okay so after listening to the entire retail the Ghostface album order is as follows:

Ironman
Supreme Clientele
Fishscale
Bulletproof Wallets
Pretty Toney

yes thats right homos, Ironmans better than Supreme.

Ironman is just more consistant.

Supreme is Ghost at his lyrical apex. He hasn't sounded that good since. SC is a lot more consistent than Ironman, as well. Ironman is consistent, but doesn't have the same impact. His rhyme style was kinda underdeveloped at that point still. And I don't think there's one song on Ironman that's touching Nutmeg, Buck 50 or Childs Play. Daytona 500 comes close to doing so, I guess.

The only songs I really care about off Bulletproof Wallets are Theodore and Strawberry. The Forest is cool, but the lyrics are kinda...eh.

Pretty Toney was a lot better, mainly because Run is one of the best songs ever period.

Fishscale is his most consistent since SC, obviously.

The Watch, Good Times and The Drummer should have been on the respective albums they all didn't make the cut for, though.

Hold on, I'm confused...

Synethetic Substitution was the beat used on Ego Trippin by Ultragmagnetic, was it not?

Google says so at least.

And The Champ clearly has the same beat as Ego Trippin', therefore, the beat used in the Champ is Synthetic Substitution, not Funky President.

right then, i've checked the linear notes for Mighty healthy and it says samples funky president, thats obviously the break because there's no other part of funky president on there. It does sample a song called substitution, not synthetic substitution. I've listened to Ego trippin and i reckon thats the funky president break too

re addiction the only sample named on there is funny valentine by etta james and i don't hear any strings so i can't clarify that either way unless your version is different to mine. Also i don't hear anything on addiction that sounds remotely like June, unless it's layered underneath something else an my old ears just aren't picking it up

Ego Trippin, Might Healthy and The Champ all use Synthetic Substitution for the main drums. You'd probably most easily recognize Funky Pres from Kid 'N Play's Last Night, because it's virtually sampled wholesale on it. I don't think that Ego Trippin uses it at all. And I'm not sure where it is on Mighty Healthy.

For Synthetic Sub, think DWYCK.

Looks like first week sales for Fishscale are higher than any of Ghost's albums since Ironman. Over 100,000 sold. That's like half of the total sales of each of his last 3 albums. And that's also with it leaking a month before it dropped.

yet only 1/5 of a far inferior album's sales. TI's King

Ghostface
Sincerely Yours
He’s a founding member of the foundering Wu-Tang Clan, but he’s quietly put together one of the highest-quality solo portfolios in hip-hop history. In the face of slumping sales, shifting trends and a bad case of writer’s block, the inimitable Ghostface continues to astound. Go in, Tony!
Posted In: XXL Magazine, Features

With all due respect to the homie Paul Wall, on the reals, Ghostface has always been, and continues to be, the people’s champ. For 13 years, Wu-Tang’s masked avenger, born Dennis Coles in 1970, has been tickling the fancy of rap fans round the world with his vivid storytelling, unpredictable references and emphatic, even dire, flow. Unfortunately, in order to sell more than a couple hundred thousand units, you gotta enchant more than just rap fans—and that’s something Ghost’s stellar catalog of solo material (’96’s Ironman, 2000’s Supreme Clientele, ’01’s Bulletproof Wallets and ’04’s The Pretty Toney Album) has repeatedly failed to do. In fact, he’s moved fewer units with each release. However, thanks to his loyal core audience, and high regard among his peers, in a situation where a less credible artist would lose their spot on Def Jam’s roster, for Ghost, opportunity abounds. 2006 promises the release of his fifth LP, Fishscale, as well as a still-untitled EP with underground superhero MF Doom—and possibly even the highly anticipated sequel to Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, his devoutly revered 1995 collaboration with Wu-Tang rhyme partner Raekwon. (Though Ghost says the latter two projects are both in their infancy.) Ghostface caught up with XXL this winter to discuss his desire to win in ’06, writer’s block and how the Clan will definitely, maybe, reunite for another album. Possibly.

How long did it take you to realize your last album was a bust?
I knew right off the bat. It took but one week. And then we had a couple of niggas that was hating in the Def Jam building. Like my man Kevin Liles [company president at the time].

Really? How was he hating?
It’s like he wouldn’t respect our goals, and it was like he made one smart [comment] about, “I’m not the one who signed you.” [Former Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen did.] You could read between what niggas be saying and shit. Like, Oh all right, that’s how you really, really feel and shit.

Were you frustrated?
I mean, of course. Who wouldn’t be? You get frustrated because it’s like, Damn, I done took a year and some change out my time just to go ahead to try and build this shit, going through a writer’s block, wasting studio time, smoking weed, forgetting every fuckin’ thing I done fuckin’ wrote down, didn’t know what the fuck to do, too tired to go to the fuckin’ studio, sitting in the studio not doin’ nothing ’cause you can’t think of shit. Like, yo. And for it not to do nothing? You’re muthafuckin’ right, G. You start thinking that it’s you. What am I doing wrong? Am I making the wrong records? No, I can’t be, because it’s like, Yo, a lot of niggas love what I do. So to be going through it four times consecutively… Something just don’t seem right. So, yeah, a nigga was frustrated. Because now it’s like, Damn, you done did that and you sell 68,000 fuckin’ units the first week. You look at your SoundScan like, Come on. What the fuck is this shit?

Are you looking at this new album to boost your career?
[I’m looking at it to] put me back in the game, B! It’s like I’m in the game and shit. But it’s like, you know, I been had a lot of bad luck with record companies. I gave [Sony] like three bombs. They couldn’t do nothing with it. Those three bombs worked out my credibility, where people respect me. I came to Def Jam, gave them a nice album. It made a lot of headlines, but there was nothing behind it. I’m like, What the fuck is going to happen next? I’m already at the bottom of the barrel. I got a lot of talent in me that, maybe, if I was being exposed more, a lot more people would hear my album and feel like, Yo, this nigga write from the heart. It ain’t just something from the brain, trying to make something work. Nah, this nigga took dedication even putting the order together. I’m just here to sell some records and let Hov and LA Reid know like, Yo, I’m still that nigga.

Are things better for you at Def Jam since Jay-Z took over? What’s your relationship with him like?
Me and Hov is… We real cool. He gonna look me at my face and talk to me on some real-nigga-to-real-nigga. Not one nigga taking a thousand phone calls in front of my face, puffing on a big cigar and acting like he hearing me but he ain’t hearing me. There’s no pride there. If I bring my album to him and I be like, Yo, so what you need me to do, son? We are working together to help fix this, to make this something that we can move some units on. Ain’t no, Yo, nigga. I’m my own man. Come on, son. This nigga done run it. I follow in the footsteps of vets, regardless if they younger than me or older than me.
So the new album is called Fishscale. Sounds pretty self-explanatory. Is it a concept record, or is that just a title?
I had to go back a little bit and take these niggas on some real live black shit. You know, moving back in on the cocaine shit, because it seems like nowadays niggas is respecting a lot of that bullshit, that white-white. You know: cold drugs, sex, and money and all that. You know what I mean? That’s what’s moving right now, so I had to go back in on some real Tony Starks shit—paint a few pictures and shit.

Does it frustrate you as an artist to try and cater to the market?
Yeah. You know, the game is funny, because you never know which way to go with these people nowadays. So one minute they like this, next minute, they like that. So you know, trying to keep up with muthafuckas and shit, it’s like, Yo, if you want to go in here, I can go in there and ball on that. So I just said, Fuck it. I’m just gonna go with this Fishscale shit, paint my pictures and keep it moving.

Whats going with New York hip-hop
We’re no longer trendsetters. I guess we’re just tyring to keep up with the Joneses. I cant do that cause Im an originator. I invent a lot of shit, ill shit. Niggas will laugh at me if I was to try and go and dive into that other pool of water. My credibility is on the line. But niggas that go ahead and take on that sound? All right, I can’t knock it. But I do know for us as a people out here, we’re fucked up. Because you can look at the unity. Yo, you can take a bunch of South niggas and they love each other. Them niggas support each other. You check one video out, you got like four or five other different fuckin artist inside that one nigga video. We hate each other. There’s too much devilish men [in New York]. The devil all over our hearts, minds, body, soul everything. The [South] niggas? They happy and having fun, [like New York in the] 80’s.

Well, in the mid-90’s you’d see yourself and Rae with people like Nas and Mobb Deep….
I mean yeah. It was all right. It wasn’t never a cool, cool thing…..

What do you mean?
You know the era we came in was the “I don’t give a fuck” era. We came in not really giving a fuck about nobody really.

So you weren’t really that cool with other artists?
I mean we was so deep, we had a lot of niggas scared. We had a lot of niggas under pressure and shit. Niggas didn’t want to feel the wrath of neither one of us. But the reason why niggas hate each other now, it’s like… It’s the shit that we talk, man. Because everybody wants to be that livest nigga-the Scarface nigga. When we dropped Cuban Linx, we started a lot of that shit that come out they mouth. [Now they] coming in spitting that fly shit, coming in with that attitude.

So whats the answer? How do you fix this?
You know, through our music, man. We can make this game last forever, but we’re not being creative. You gotta remember, what you talk about today, these young people become programmed. So now you got the baby that’s coming up with the frowns now. You’re looking at your future.

But having said that, with Fishscale you said you were really going dig into the streets.
This is how I eat. I didn’t really, really want to, but I got to come to the people as the people and go in. And then, maybe when I got these niggas I can-slowly but surely, not trying to hit them with a full piece-but just give them a little slice. But I do come with a lot of different other styles and creative shit, like I got this song where I’m rhyming underwater. Mermaid snactehd me up and was taking me through mad shit under there. Spongebob was under there, some rocks from the Titanic. But that’s my imagination. I like to write stories. See what you gonna do when you’re 40? I’m still kick that same shit, nigga.

A lot of rappers seem to lose inspiration in their 30s, but I get the feeling you’ll be rhyming when you’re 80…
Of course!Of course! I could rhyme about different topics. I could rhyme about….With you sitting right there and me sitting right here….I could have you turn into Spider-Man right now interviewing me. You could have sipped your coffee and your face could have changed. Anything. It’s like using your imagination. Rapping is like….Let’s sxee, reading is fundamental. Rapping is fundamental, too man.

Since it’s all about imagination and inspiration, you mentioned getting writer’s block before. How do you get out or that?
I let it get out of me. You just got to wake up one morning and it’s gone. It’s like you can have that shit for weeks or months. But it happens to everybody, because you done rhymed about a lot of shit. I have a lot of things on my mind, and it makes it hard. It’s scary though ‘cause you start thinking you’re falling off and shit. It happened for a minute during all my albums [after Ironman ]. It happened on the later Wu-Tang ones, too.

What’s your take on those later Wu albums?
They was wack, totally wack. You could hear niggas got paid just to say whatever the fuck you wanted and leave the studio. But when you’re broke, everybody’s there. When money come into play, you got everything. You got bitches now that will take you to leave the studio instead of sitting there with your brother and helping your brother get through on that rap or whatever. Just putting the time in, you know what I mean? And that’s how them albums was treated. The W was a little too dark for me. It was gloomy. I didn’t really like those albums at all.

There was no passion…
Yeah, yeah. And once you got niggas just coming in and leaving and not making sure that the hook is right or making the right decision…Should that be the single? Or even skits. Like the “Killah Tape” skit on the first album. Come on, son. We sat there and we did that. Nowadays, niggas, you think too hard. What you gonna come up with next? I mean and that’s cool, cause you want to be…But it’s like, Yo G, anything. Just do it funny. Eat a bowl of cereal on a skit, nigga! [Laughs] Don’t take it so serious.

Will there ever be another Wu-Tang album?
With the Wu, there’s tension in the air. It’s a lot of things that we got to fix amongst ourselves. But so many holes already that been dug, you don’t know where to put the patch over. Everybody gotta be like, Whatever happened, it just happened and we gonna move on. I feel in my heart that, at least, that might be…That there will be one more Wu-Tang album, at least.

On a light note. I gotta ask why do you always rap about food?
Yeah, it’s true. But you know, I never think about it. I know I say a lot of crazy shit, but I never thought about that before. I don’t know. It’s just…food for thought

Who else is pissed that 3 of the 4 DOOM beats are recycled from his Special Herbs? -- 2 of which were used by the Monsta Island Czars already.

Here's how this place sometimes reaches into my life.

I'm at the music shop and I see this on a CD: Ghostface Killah Fishscale and I think, "That's what `The Ghostface Killah "Fish Scale" thread' thread means."

...a thread about a rap group or possibly two people who rap and the album that they made. It's not just a noun string.

So I bought it. :o

Update:

According to Ghost’s management he will NOT be on Jay-Z’s new album as rumors are saying. Jay-Z has, however, asked Ghost to drop a new album by the end of new year, 12th of December to be exact and it is currently entitled "More Fish".

in hindsight, Fishscale wasnt the CLASSIC everyone said it would be. I mean, its good and stuff but I listen to maybe three songs on occasion.
