Bboys crotches in my face, up all night, girls giving us their place, Yauch givin's M the "whaaa?" face, Tom from MySpace, Rachel Dratch at the coat check, jesus christ.

It was amazing.

14 songs, I know M knows the exact set list so I'll let her post that.

At one point, we ended up realizing we were right next to some bbmbers, and then met another few who had come on here and signed up, looking for a way to get in. Just fuckin nuts, man, totally amazing. I got some great video.

I'm uploading some video right now. You guys are gonna shit yourselves when you realize how close we were. It was just crazy. I still don't believe it happened, I think it was really all a dream.

I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me get into the show, M and the others involved. I don't want to name names unless they let me, but someone was absolutely determined to get me into the show and they did and for that I am so truly grateful.

OKay here's the video guys - enjoy, from my point of view, some Body Movin'- please excuse me singing along, sadly you can hear it easier than the boys, I promise I wasn't that loud just...yeah.

You guys are truly blessed to have gone. I used to be such a die-hard
beastie fan to the point my old roomates nearly killed me for talking/listening/quoting them 24/7. I have boxes of 12 inches and bootleg videos from all over and ticket stubs from all over the country from these guys. Even have old cassettes traded from the nando/beastie irc/mailserver days in '94. Still see MMM every time he plays in the bay area.

This band influenced so much of who I am, what I listen to and how I grew
up I cant explain.

Unfortunatly I fell out of the loop on this SLC shit and am glad to see that some of you frequent posters got to see such an awesome event. I am totally psyched for you guys and girls and hope to see the boys again. And also glad you have a die-hard tight knit community here.

Not only did everyone from the BBMB Sundance posse get into the Gen Art/MySpace.com party, we all made it to the front of the stage. You guys are going to hate us sooo much for what we were incredibly privileged to experience last night. It was unfuckingbelievable!! Some might say it was AWESOME!!

The concert took place at Legacy Lodge, a resort in downtown Park City. The concert area was small, very much like a club.

Before the concert started, we were not against the stage; we were probably three rows back. Everyone pressed against the rail in front of the stage was female, and they all were drinking the free liquor like there was no tomorrow. I said to DandyFop, "Just you wait. They are going to ditch their position because they won't be able to handle the push when the show begins and/or they're going to need to use the toilet after all the drinks." Sure enough, once the show began, the girls directly in front of us felt the pressure and decided to hightail it. One of them who was directly dead center grabbed my arm and asked me if I wanted to be against the rail. DandyFop followed me, and we were upgraded to the best spots in the whole club! The rest of the posse filled in behind us so we were all together for the entire show. AWESOME!!

I'm not sure what time the show began. Probably around midnight. We saw the setlists being taped down and got excited when we could clearly tell it had more than three songs on it. (Someone want to explain why the Beastie Boys staff lied to fans at the NYC screening and said that only three songs were being performed at the show?)

I'm just so please for you two (and whoever the other fans were).

Yeah, there's luck involved, and I do a lot to keep my own good karma rolling by helping others out when I can. But with most lucky experiences, a big part of it is leaving the house, taking a chance, paying your dues, and reaching out to other people. Several people on this board have contributed without knowing it to some of the biggest fun I've had in the past 18 months.

The funny thing is that I'm not jealous that you saw a small show. There may be such a thing as too close for me. :p What I'm jealous of is being involved in the caper--the plotting, the camping, the anticipation, and the nerves. I know you might not want to post all the details, but post some, or please please PM me!

When you ladies are rested up, I'd love to know what the audience was like. Were there a lot of real fans, or was the crowd there to see and be seen?

And Dandy -- Have you seen Will? :o

Sundance Notebook: MySpace Beastie bash

The Salt Lake Tribune (http://www.sltrib.com/outdoors/ci_3435109)

The MySpace.com and Gen Art party Monday at Park City Mountain Resort was one of the hottest tickets of Sundance 2006 thanks to a performance by the Beastie Boys, and the trio did not disappoint.
An hourlong set of hits, accompanied by master turntablist Mixmaster Mike, got the invited guests in a frenzy, with folks literally kicking shins and throwing elbows to get close enough to MCA, King Ad-Rock and Mike D to take pictures with their camera phones. The men in the house weren't too well-behaved, either.
In addition to hearing songs ranging from early cuts like "Paul Revere" and "Brass Monkey" to newer tracks like "Ch-Check It Out" and "Triple Trouble," guests walked away with fat gift bags.

Among the contents: the Beastie Boys' recent "Solid Gold Hits" CD, a Johnny Walker golf shirt, a cosmetics set from Ecru New York, a Stella Artois glass, lipstick and eyeliner from Styli-Style, and gift certificates from Hoebel Fitness centers in New York and Los Angeles worth $400.

They were airing the winning video on TVs throughout the place...I didn't notice untill afterwards though, it's too bad they didn't screen it for the crowd, it looked pretty hilarious.

I didn't get a gift bag, who knows.

There were some girls up there next to us who were singing "Fight For Your Right", but when the band came out, did they know a fucking word? Of course not.

Fighting to get into Sundance parties
DEBBIE HUMMEL
Associated Press

PARK CITY, Utah - If Groucho Marx were at the Sundance Film Festival, he might be moved to say: "I wouldn't want to attend any party that would have me as a guest."

Park City is a place where publicists say that everyone invited to the plethora of parties is a VIP. But those in the know understand that VIP in this case means "Variety of Invited People."

The real VIPs are kept far away from the masses, ushered by security directly to a private area, while celebrity watchers and other often-unrecognizable folks are forced to wait outside in the cold for at least an hour, in the hope they might get inside to check out the hip and famous.

Despite the high number of parties that take place during the 11 days of the festival, the majority of them with celebrity access - mostly tossed by the movie companies - are small and exclusive. The larger parties, each generally with a combination of sponsors, allow for a little more room on the guest list.

Hitting a party at the film festival is all about who you are or who you know, but those who make it in can glimpse stars, sip free beverages and sometimes see a good show.

Monday night's MySpace.com/GenArt party was just such an occasion and featured a floor-shaking performance by the Beastie Boys.

According to organizers, 1,200 people were invited to the party. Invitees to major parties at the festival are generally a mix of entertainment industry and media people and whomever else organizers are able to get "on the list." Of course, big names are invited too, but they don't have to cool their heels outside where there are countless photographers eager for a moneymaking shot.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Gina Gershon were among stars attending the MySpace party at Park City Mountain Resort's Legacy Lodge. But all notables were shepherded from a press photo area to the exclusive top level of the room, which looked down on the stage.

In an hour-long set, the Beastie Boys and DJ Mix Master Mike powered through 12 songs and a one-song encore. An enthusiastic mob gathered around the stage jumping up and down so hard the floor of the room, which is probably usually used for meetings and company retreats, was shaking violently. The show was a success, especially when you consider that it's not uncommon at Sundance parties for a major artist to be performing before a crowd of industry-types more interested in networking than listening to the music.

That's been the case on more than one occasion over the years at Harry O's, the largest club in Park City, which serves as a hub for Sundance parties.

The first five days of this year's festival, Blender Magazine transformed the space to resemble Tao Nightclub, a Las Vegas club in the Venetian Hotel.

Blender's parties have been a staple at the festival for the past four years and have featured performances by Beck, Snoop Dogg and Liz Phair.

This year, each of the five nights of parties the magazine presented were hosted by a big name: actor Gael Garcia Bernal, socialite Paris Hilton and actor Wilmer Valderama, to name a few. Musical performances included Metal Skool, Broken Social Scene and reggae artist Damien Marley.

"We want to do it differently every year and keep it new and fresh," said William Gaseperoni, Blender's marketing director. "Last year was Snoop Dogg. This year was Damien Marley and next year we'll look for the right theme and who's hip."

The Blender parties are invitation only. Gyllenhaal, rocker-turned-reality-TV-star Tommy Lee and Nick Nolte were among those who partied in Blender party's VIP section - also located upstairs in the club.

Planning for next year's events will begin almost immediately, Gaseperoni said.

Sounds like a cool show (y) but the beastie boys have played that SAME setlist since like '97. Time to change it up a bit!!!!!

leisure
01-25-2006, 06:45 PM
Well shit, I had SUCH a good time at this show that I don't even know where I should start my story. I guess I'll start at the end.

During the last song (so whacha want) I got kicked out by a security guard because I was smoking a bowl of weed. The dude who kicked me out was on some macho agression trip and really manhandled me unnesessarily. We had all seen the setlist, I knew that we had reached the end of the show, so I wasn't fighting him at all, I was leaving peacefully. I kept saying "chill out man, I'm cool to leave" but he kept twisting my arm behind my back and shit. During the process of being forcefully ejected, I ended up dropping (and therefore losing) my glass pipe, which was brand new. I was upset about this for a whole 5 minutes before I realized that the side door I had just been thrown out of was right next to the back door MCA and Mike D happened to be walking out of. Talk about being at the right place at the right time, I got to say what's up to both of them, and they were both cool to me. Adrock though, ignored me when he came out 3 or 4 minutes later, but shit, if I was Adrock I'd ignore me too. :D

I kind of regret not asking them for an autograph, I had a flyer someone gave me and a pen in my coat pocket. I mean come on, how many times in a person's life are all three Beastie Boys going to walk by them in quick succession? But in the heat of the moment, I thought it would be tacky to ask. I could tell by their body language and other non-verbals (especially Adrock's) that they didn't want to be bothered, for real, they must have JUST gotten off stage.

Missed opertunities and lost parafanalia aside, I'm grateful as hell I got to go to this show. The Beasties were in fine form and I met a ton of cool people, several of which post on this board regularly, what up peeps?

Sounds like a cool show (y) but the beastie boys have played that SAME setlist since like '97. Time to change it up a bit!!!!!

I agree
the beasties shouldn’t be afraid to bring out some songs they haven’t played in awhile, and songs they only play once and awhile

instead of brass monkey, why not slow and low or rhyming and stealing

instead of shake your rump, why not Johnny ryall or sounds of science, car thief, hello Brooklyn

instead of so what'cha want, why not stand together, or the maestro
instead of gratitude, why not live at pj's, time for livin or the maestro
why not the maestro, its such a good live song

instead of root down or sure shot, why not all right hear this, get it together with a guest mc, do it, flute loop

instead of intergalactic or body movin, why not the move, putting shake in your game, negotiation limerick file, grasshopper unit, unite!

instead of triple trouble, why not that it, thats all, the bruhaha, time to build, rhyme the rhyme well

all these songs I have mentioned they have played live before

it would also be nice to play songs they have never played live before

would be nice to see them drop the greatest hits setlist and bring in some surprises

I agree. But I'm sure they didn't spend a lot of time rehearsing for this show, so they went with the stuff they've been doing.

I think for the Pageant they did a decent job of throwing some various stuff in. They had their old-faithful set list then would spot a song or two here or there.

Miramanee have you got a recorder in your brain? Unbelievable that you can remember all that stuff! I guess if I'd write them down straight away I might remember things, but like back in 98 the round tour when the Beasties ran to the stage (here in Sthlm) Yauch gave me low five on the way up to the stage and I can't remember anything else from then on from that gig!

Thanks for sharing all the stories and photos! Man, a club tour would be great, I'm so glad I got to see them the last time here, a promo gig at a small club, being right at the front in the middle, loads of butterflies in my stomach so I can totally relate your feelings!
And I like the way Barbs follows the guys on the video, at least you know it's a fan filming when she knows exactly who's singing which part!

Well since I got official approval, I'm gonna tell yall how my Monday night went down. I snuck in to the show! Hairdu said he was determined to get me into this show, so he and his friends copied their wristbands and let me have one (they didn't pass them around or anything, just used it to get me and one friend in). It wasn't a big deal at all, the security guards just glanced at it barely. Apparently there was quite a few people who snuck in, some with no wristbands at all, just kinda flashed their wrist real quick.

So I have to say THANKS SO MUCH to hairdu for really putting himself out there and making sure that I got in to the show. It was really the experience of a lifetime and I owe him a lot. He's a great guy, folks!! Not to mention I was obssessed with the NY accents I was hearing.

from http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/2006/01/26/ap/entertainment/d8fbva781.txt

Alright, the thread is miles long and you may not read this. But, I've been down for a very long time and I've had a similar experience. True True. That was in the pageant tour in Ft. Laudy Dodi! If you have the DVD files from the thread a bit back, I can actually point out the whole incident on film!!!!!!!

So, it was two front row shows in about 2 months time. But the Crobar show was so much better (even with the short set) because of the size of the stage/club and our proximity to the boys.

I guess I should put my 2 cents in here. First and foremost, it was great to meet all of you at the show. I had a total blast hanging out and having fun.

Yes, before I left NYC, and heard that Dandy did not have a way into the show, I was determined to get her in, being a local and all. As M pointed out everyone backstage/upstairs was a total "hanger on-er", so I only felt right trying to get Utah's B-Girl into the show, knowing the crowd/douche factor.

My friend Rockstar and I already had GenArt passes. We pick up our credentials on Sunday afternoon for Monday night's show. They were wristbands, and Rockstar is into a little of the 'ol graphic design. No sooner did we walk out the door of getting our shit, he just turns and says "Dude....get me to the nearsest Kinko's and we're all in." In all actuality, we didn't do shit about it until sometime on Monday afternoon. So, low and behold, we were able to help out Dandy and other friends from NYC. Miramanee had her thing worked out, so all was looking good. As Dandy said, security was a joke, so I totally could have taped the show, but I didn't even bring gear out there with me. (That was a public response to a PM.) I'm glad that I didn't because taping is a huge pain in the ass and limits your fun.

So, anyway, I really think the best part about it was meeting some cool people such as Miramanee, Dandyfop, Mris (I hope I got that right), and those that I am forgetting. I hope that we all can do it again sometime....sooner than later. In the words of Rockstar..... "Rock On"

Am I just imagining this: Is it fair to say that where Yauch could have 'undone' the band in the fan's eyes circa 2003, Adrock is now the holder of this title? Or am I an internet loony?

In 2003, many speculated that Yauch seemed to be the least interested of the trio in maintaining the group. On the boards it was considered by a few that he could 'undo' the group, by dictating what they would do in regards to politics, performance and content.

Not entirely the same is this present situation, but it seems that Adrock is the one who could 'undo' the band. Posts like this probably don't help, but doesn't anybody else see him itching to do something other than be a Beastie Boy? Or maybe it's just BS2000 residue.

Just a thought, and a pretty dumb one at that.

I hope they're all in it together for another album. But more power if they're not.

Actually that's one thing this film has overshadowed: when could we realistically expect another record?

i think this film will rejuvinate their spirits as a band.

check out the moviephone interview that youngremy posted. their confidence is palpable.

sort of off subject, but i think a great move would be to do the next album with mario caldato or to do one with lots of different producers.

Also, it would've been interesting for them to release a new track with this DVD, as it's going to have a CD album version of the concert with it. This way they could get up and perform on the interview shows like letterman and conan and get interviewed about the film, or in reverse order. or not.

I didn't get that impression. It's true that you could see a lack of enthusiasm in interviews around SGH release. But I think that the clips that Dandy posted show that he's enjoying it as always.
The fact that he does other things probably means only that the other two are engaged in other stuff and that they're not working on the next album. He has to do something, he cannot sit on his ass all day.

It's normal for members of various bands to engage in other projects.
And as Bionic said about the unscripted interview

... all three were in good form at the same time for once!

This is the first I'm hearing of a CD version of the show.. where'd you hear this or have I been sleeping the past few months?

Also, it would've been interesting for them to release a new track with this DVD, as it's going to have a CD album version of the concert with it. This way they could get up and perform on the interview shows like letterman and conan and get interviewed about the film, or in reverse order. or not.

Someone asked at the film if they would release a CD of it and they seemed like the answer was no because of all the sampling rights.

Adrocks testified the unity within the band (as in they all have to agree on something) as the reason for their longetivity. he's not about to ''undo' the beastie boys, none of them are. crazy talk!

^^I agree....that's crazytalk.

I think part of the secret to their longevity is that they take long breaks in between records and do stuff at their own pace. No rush...

Hahaha, nobody famous I don't think. They were trying to get pics with the Bboys in back of them - once AdRock stood right behind her when he was singing for a photo though, that was cool of him.

from http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/cl-et-hiphop28jan28,0,6613239.story?coll=cl-movies

The Beastie Boys concert was notable on a visual level in that it highlighted the overlap between "urban" fashions and snowboard culture. Apparently, the parka, wool skully cap and baggy jeans look can take you from Utah (even when a film festival isn't into town) to Brooklyn with no questions asked.

New York import DJ Stretch Armstrong warmed up the crowd with classic rap from Just Ice, Ultramagnetic MCs and the Jungle Brothers. And as the Beastie Boys took the stage, the aroma of marijuana hung thick in the air.

"Must be the altitude," quipped Beastie Boy Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz).

"We don't really get a lot of rappers up here," said Bill Malcolm, 22, of Salt Lake City, who temporarily abandoned his job handing out an event sponsor's bottled water to watch the group's show. "Eminem came up to Salt Lake [City]. But you almost never see hip-hop here [in Park City]."

Malcolm commented that the Beastie Boys appeared "old" — the youngest member is 39 — but amended his opinion somewhat after they bounced across the stage, whipping the crowd into a frenzy for 45 minutes. "Even though they're old, they still rock," he said.

There must have been ten of them that I had never heard before.

Well, Not that anyone cares but its been almost a week and I am still excited, so I will post my sundance story....

Well... the Sundance Film Awesome: IFST was long since sold out, but they have a standby line incase some peeps don't show. So I got there 4 and 1/2 hours early to wait in line to see if I could get in. Well I was first in line but only by a few minutes, but nonetheless, I got in with ease, and I am glad I did, because not only was the concert video on the big screen awesome, the Beastie Boys were there to introduce the Video and do a Q and A afterwards to get feed back on it. Beasties hilarous as usual.

This was an awesome experiance, and I was so glad I went, but for some reason I still wasn't satisfied... And so the story continues...

As it turns out the following monday after the premiere of the film (last monday) there was going to be this private concert of the Beastie Boys to promote the movie in a ski lodge. No tickets sold, you had to get a special invite from somebody to get in. And of course I had no connections... But this was the Beastie Boys we were talking about. So I decided to venture to see if there was some way, just some way I might could possibly get in to this private concert.

One friend said I should go for it, another not so sure, and my brother in law (yeah Andrea is actually married, wierd huh) gave it a one in a billion odds.

None the less I figured I had to try. So I couldn't sleep the preceding night literally dreaming of possible ways to get, ranging anywhere from making up a name and hope its on the bouncers list, to locking myself in the Janitor's Closet till it starts. I took it as a sign I had to atleast try.

So with no real definitive plan I head up to park city after my college classes. I arrive at the Lodge 4 to 5 hours before the party/ concert was scheduled to start (it was a Djed party till the B-Boys went on stage) having never been to that lodge before (at least to my recolection. So I just walk directly to the upstairs where the party was going to be like I knew what I was doing, and began to just hope for the best.

Tons of people were just everywhere putting together the decor and the lighting and everything for the event. So my first reaction was to go up to one of the guys and say, "so do you need help moving that furniture?"

He responded "yeah, maybe, who were you with?"

I said," Oh I am a volenteer here at the lodge."

He said," oh ok, so is this for like an internship or something?"

I said," Sort of, I am going into events promotion. I am using it as a resume builder."
(I am not sure that is a real major, but I'll be a toliet scrubbing major if it will get me into a Beastie Boys concert!)

After that he never questioned it. He kind of took me under his wing, so I just followed him around and he gave me stuff to do to help set up the party. And I am guessing the people from the Lodge setting up never said anything becuase they must have assumed I was with this Decor and Lighting company. Things started to look brighter, but it wasn't over yet...

So as it was getting closer to the party starting, more security guards start showing up (ha ha but I was already in the venue!) But panic started when they started doing security sweeps, covering the whole floor checking every ones passes... I talked my way out of the first one saying I was going to get mine right now, but it was apparent that wouldn't work for the second sweep...

I sat in one of the lounges by a fireplace next to this random girl thinking that maybe if I made conversation I would look like I was supposed to be there and not get checked. To my great luck it turns out this girl and a few others that showed up afterwards were working for Aquifina bottle water, and none of them had passes yet so they were told to stick in this area to avoid getting the boot, untill they could get them aquifina T-shirts to wear to double as their pass.

So I thought, well I'll just chill with these guys for a bit to avoid getting checked. Well as it turns out every one just assumed I was there to work for aquifina, but a few q's were raised when nobody knew who I was. So a conversation of one of the Aquifina guys in charge to the main Lady in charge goes + or - as follows.

Af guy- "I thought there was only supposed to be for working here tonight, (to me ) what was your name again..."

Me- "Ryan"

af- "his name is Ryan... oh ok... (to me) sorry for the mix up your actually not working tonight..." "who are you with any ways...?"

Me-"I am with the Volenteer Staff, they said you guys might need an extra person."

af-"(to head lady) he says he is with the Volenteer Staff.... do we need an extra person?" "oh ok... yeah, definately...then just bring an extra t-shirt..." (to all the workers including me....) Oh ok she'll be here in a few minutes with the T-shirts."

Mentally I said," YESSSSSSS!!!!" I was totally working for aquifina at that point. And can I say easy Job! They hooked me up with a t-shirt, which not only allowed me free access to and from the building, but also to the VIP lounge upstairs which I heard that (but didn't see) some mildly famous celebrities were in attendance ie. cory feldman (one of the guys from Goonies) you know those celebs get thirsty too!

So while every one was partying waiting for the concert to start all I had to do was walk around, sport my t-shirt and if some one was thirsty give them some bottled water. And then we were low on water a little bit before the show started (party started at 9, but b-boys at about 11:30ish, free drinks a food for all and dance club atmosphere till then) we were low on water so I was directed to just walk around, and look pretty. Who hoo!!!!! So of course what am I gonna do, how about enjoy the free private Beastie Boys Concert!!!

There were only about 1200 people in attendance so as I am sure you know that is a very small audience for major band. Naturally I worked my way towards the front of the intimately close stage, to have my wildest dreams come true when the music started!!! It was awesome, and I was so close!!! Most everybody was so close. At point I was close enough that one of the Beastie Boys reached out and Slapped me a high five!!! I am never washing that hand again!!!

They played Basically all the hits plus a few more (which is a lot, they are 6 albums deep) 15 songs in all. I got plenty of pictures on my disposable camera that I will try to post somewhere somehow when I figure it out!

I can now die a happy man!

I am not going to say the greatest part of all, but it was definately the Cherry on top... Not only did I see the greatest band in history at a private no tickets sold concert for FREE....... The Aquifina Lady ended up paying me 40 bucks for working the show!!!

I got paid 40 buck to watch my favorite band of all time!!!!!!!!!!

I left my house that morning with nothing much more than determination and High hopes, and came home with once in a lifetime memories and a pocket ful of cash. (Well I went back the next day to get the cash, but none the less)

So if any one else has any cool sundance story's, please share. i think I have read several already.

I forgot to tell about the t-shirts that they handed out at the show.

About an hour before the show started, someone in the balcony began to throw t-shirts to the audience below. They were long-sleeved, grey t-shirts that had the word "AWESOME" on the front (http://static.flickr.com/33/92298894_9b7bcf1f2b.jpg) and "I FUCKIN' SHOT THAT!" on the back (http://static.flickr.com/27/92298895_c0add40d25.jpg) in blue lettering. I scored one at the show. DandyFop got one earlier in the week.
