On that songs that suck thread me and Ally got babbling about the stone roses. just wondered what everyone thought about them, got anythin interestin to say about them, what your favorite track is, do you think they are the most overrated/underrated band ever?
I think they were the dogs bollocks. I'm kinda glad they split up though and didnt go really shit. Best track is This Is The One and if you think they were overrated you are wrong! :D

i wish they'd dropped the 2nd album around fools gold/ what the world is waiting for time, two fucking fantastic records and very different at the same time, said hey you don't live today. stop the world, stop the world i'm gettin off
such a shame they got tied up in record company bollocks, one love was a class track from that period as well
when the album first dropped both the NME and Q wrote it off, both more or less said it was just retro pyshcadelic crap, and by the summer they were sucking their dicks big time

The Stone Roses are definitely one of the Top 5 bands of all time. The Stone Roses is a perfect rock album. The band themselves are a great representation of the Manc rebel attitude. My brother met Mani in the supermarket the other day. He's going to one of my brother's band's gigs next week.
Ian Brown also sent me a letter and loads of signed CDs and vinyl and shit when I passed my GCSEs cuz my brother knows people in his record company. That was amazing. (y)

That's my favorite song of theirs as well.
I don't think they're overrated at all. They're hardly even ever mentioned in North America. Not in the media, I mean.
I thought that Second Coming had its moments, but was overall a bit disappointment, as the general consensus seems to go. But I liked the direction they were going in; the harder, more riff-driven sound. They weren't just rehashing their debut. Driving South and Love Spreads were right up there with my favorites off the first album.
Where Angels Play is another favorite.

The Second Coming is a strange beast. It was obviously something that developed over time and they went in different directions whilst recording. Songs like Begging You,Good Times,Tightrope and Ten Storey Love Song are all so different. Its a good album but it was never gonna live up to over five years of hype. Its got some fuckin amazin tunes on it but its the sound of a band at odds with each other, at odds with how they wanted to sound.

tightrope is a great song. i remember pre the release of the second coming (in the days before internet leaks and whatnot) the press saying they were sounding like a led zep and thinking fuck me thats sounds interesting. Do you have ride on from the ten storey love song single ? thats an ace tune
on a side note beck said fools gold was a big influence on him, when he heard it, it totally changed the way he looked at music and it's boundaries

Fools Gold is an awesome song, the mp3 of it has been my ringtone on my phone for over a year now. The funk guitar on that song is ridiculously good.
This Is The One is definitely one of my favourite songs of all time. Man United play it in the stadium at the start of their matches to get the crowd hyped up. Quality. (y)

My favourite three are Fool's Gold, I wanna be adored and She Bangs the Drums.
Oddly, I really enjoy Love Spreads and Breaking into Heaven, but I couldn't put anything that's not off their first album down as one of the top 3.
The build up of I wanna Be adored, and how simple yet full of intent the lyrics and music are just make it so badass.

What's the last track off their debut album called?
That song is always used as the last song at The Mod Club and makes for a great finale to a night of clubbing. (y)

Thats a bold statement - your gonna have to name 5 bands from manchester better that the roses - I'd be hard pushed to name 5 bands from anywhere that i like more than the roses!
The 5 best bands from manchester in my opinion are:
The Stone Roses
The Smiths
New Order
Oasis
Happy Mondays

I will say this about the carpets though - this is how it feels is one of the best songs ever to come out of manchester. Saw them at glastonbury a coupla years ago and they finished "Joe" and then said "here's a new one we've just done" - massive groan from the crowd then the organ to this is how it feels comes in - crowd went narnaz.

It was with dude bein from oldham that i mentioned IC's, they were only ever ok to me, few good 12's but the album was proper disappointment. Joe was class tho, and i always dug/ digged (?) their version of gimme shelter, peel session sif i remember correctly

what GI said, and i reckon the only group in that list coming any where near are the smiths and thats only becaus they were a direct influence on the roses. i mean don't get me wrong, very good band and all that but it's the roses for me all the way

Hello folks, I'm back again. Sorry about the delay.
Here's my 5
1) Joy Division. Oh yes, Can you feel it- the tingle up your spine? Thats Hooky's bass. The cold shiver- thats Barney's super cool guitaring, The blood surging- thats Steve's hummingbird drumming. The feel as you leave the confines of your body and never wanna go back? Thats Ian Curtis tearing the fucking world apart.
2) The Fall. How do you some this group up. Paul Jones might give you some superlatives. Go listen to Suid Lord. Mark E. Smith is a legend.
3) New Order. Im gonna count them as a seperate band to JD. Went naff during the 90's but back on Track. Not much can top songs like Temptation, Perfect Kiss, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith and Blue Monday for giving you a buzz that shouldn't be legal, even in Holland.
4) The Smiths. Lest we not forget, Johnny Marr was one of the greatest guitarists ever. Downbeat but funny- bittersweet. People who don't like The Smiths just haven't givin em a chance.
5) Oasis. Woah, it's okay, I'm gonna add prefix- Oasis before they went shit. Definately Maybe and Whats the Story are banging albums, I don't care what any fucker says.
The Stone roses are in the 5- 10 region along with:
Yup, the Inspital Carpets, I Want You and Dragging Me Down being daddies, its Boony's organ tinkling that elevates it to being smart pop music- if such a thing exists.
Happy Mondays
Chameleons- Swamp Thing makes the world a better place.
Puressance
808 State- admittedly not an expert but the shit kicks arse.
I can give or take The Charlies.

No arguments with new order, smiths and joy division. Oasis just about but they took so much from the roses that you cant have them in the top 5 and not have the roses. The first two oasis albums are top, the third one is patchy - the fourth is awful , the fifth has some ok stuff and the new one is a proper return to form - really good. I have issues with The Fall , i dont get them- done some ok stuff but considerin they have been around for so long, I think they are defintley a case of quantity over quality.

Fair do's- I do like the Roses after all and Oasis only nick it cos I have really cool memories of oasis from my schooldays. I think its unfair to start saying how borrowed from who cos everyones influenced by someone. On The Fall, I see what you mean but I recently got the Fall Peel Sessions boxset- there 97 tracks and not many of them feel like fillers. Whatever happened to Paul Jones? Could do with his Fall input. The Carpets are still cool though. Chances of them getting back together I hear.
