I mean I know they're not a super-macho thing to do or anything, but when I do newspaper crosswords (which I do online to kill time as well) I often notice subtle (and some not so subtle) gay cultural references as clues. The other day one puzzle had Mae West's "Sextette", actor Rock Hudson and sheen fabric "Charmeuse", all three in a row. I couldn't help but wonder if it was a little shout out of sorts.
I also remember the gay waitron gathering around enthusiastically to do the crossword whenever I'd bust it out to pass the time between prep and service as a chef. (Maybe they just thought I looked hot in my whites). ;)
So now I have this image of the people who compose crossword puzzles for the papers as balding old hairpinned queens sipping tea and chuckling to themselves while their overweight tabby looks on from the windowseat.
I know, who cares, right?
-Funny misleading clue from todays Globe puzzle:
20 across: "Masseur's offering"
_ _ CK _ _ _
answer: BACKRUB
