Not sure if this has been posted yet.... Anyway, I emailed one of the guys at THINKFilm asking him about release dates and cities and this was the response I got....
The movie will be in select cities starting March 31st. but on March
23rd we're doing a one night only screening in 150-200 cities. so you
can see it then as well.
The DVD will be out in the summer.
Looks like it will, indeed, be in just a few large markets for an extended period of time. Still, the one night only screening is encouraging. Here's to hoping Indianapolis makes one of the cuts.

...There also was edgy fare, such as Stay, which was in such demand that even the press screening was sold out, and Awesome: I F****n' Shot That!, by director Nathanial Hornblower. While some didn't appreciate the shaky camera effects of the Beastie Boy doc, Michael Ferraro of Film Threat.com gave it a five-star rating. I sat next to Justin Marciano and Nick Taussig of Revolver Entertainment. They loved film and bought the rights to distribute it in England. The Beastie Boys concert at the festival gave the doc extra value.
While at a press party, I spoke with Tamra Davis, whose short film A Conversation with Basquiat was selected for the Shorts Program. Davis and her husband (Beastie Boy Mike D) had to take turns minding their two toddlers while the other attended his or her film screenings. While commercialism surrounds Sundance, Sundance still recognizes real people we can all relate to who make indie films.

If I had the pleasure of meeting Tamra Davis I would quiz her on her choice of shots in Crossroads. Because that was truely an unforgetable movie for all the wrong reasons
But I would try to tell her about the advantages of this (http://www.andreascahling.com/images%5Cbot812392868.jpg) and that (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0001KCFPC.01-A11SOKGM9EN2N2._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg)

I have no experience in the film industry, but this is difficult to understand. How and why would they show the film for just one day in 150 places at once, and prior to the theatrical release of the movie? And on a Thursday? Is there some significance to that date? Does this mean that they will be playing crappy copies of the movie? Because it seems like it would cost a lot to distribute good copies for just one showing. What sort of theaters play the movie for one day when it's not a sneak preview for a theatrical release? Are there 150 cities with indie/revival houses?

You know, I'd say Sydney and Melbourne both have more chance than any other Australian city of getting a screening (unless I missed something about the Beastie Boys hating Australia and deciding not to screen it here).
Melbourne's got much more hope than Tehran, too, which is almost certainly out of the running.

I'm not sure about the timing of the one night screening, but I think overall its just an attempt to get the movie out in front of the public as much as possible.....promotion if you will. A lot of the indie theatres in smaller markets/cities most likely wouldnt commit to an extended run. On the other hand, a one night only screening is far less of a risk. As much as I like the beastie boys I realize that there may not be enough interest in my particular city to viably support an extended run. Afterall, theaters are in the interest of making money.
Also... if the movie does very well in some of the smaller cities I'm sure those cities may be extended the option of picking it up on a limited run. Maybe that's why they're showing it in these cities before the theatrical release.... so that if it does really well, some of those smaller cities will pick it up for an extended run.
all just a guess...
I have been told that my city is included in the one night screening so I'm happy about that.

If I were they, I would get a grassroots effort going with the fans in the cities they plan to show the film. In the DIY spirit that the film was made, they could get fans to promote the film by hanging flyers about town and talking to local newspapers, radio, and other media about the one-off showing. I've been involved in such "street team" efforts for other artists and they were tremendously successful.
What a great idea. There was a lot of discussion of a street team leading up to the release of TT5B. I think the admins even said that it might happen...there was a long-ass thread on here with people volunteering to cover their respective cities. But it fizzled.

Again, I don't understand how indie movie companies are run. I don't get how the release of films or publicity is financed. But if you were going to show the movie for one night in my town, and if you told me about it with sufficient notice, I would plan on going and I would tell a lot of people about it. I think you would want the schedule posted on this website and on the Think Films website. If you don't tell people when and where the movie will be played, I don't know how you expect people to find out about it and go. We really don't have the network of indie theaters and revival houses that we once had so I never look at the local film schedule anymore.
I know it's early days yet and they're probably rehashing what happened at Sundance and the publicity it got there, so the silence now might not mean anything. I hope they release some real info here at some point.

Co-Sign Doc. (y)
If it were a matter of playing the film one night only in a bunch of random cities, it would either be a part of a 'Features' month at an indie theatre, showcasing various festival films; or it would specifically be a screening of A;IFST for one night only.
In Perth at least, I see the former as being more viable. We have a chain of indie-theatres that will screen fesatival films on limited runs. This would be perfect.
I don't know any people outside of the net, but given a few pointers I could rustle up support. As Doc said, reasonable notice would have to be given. Most cities would have at least 2 MBers who could attempt a concerted effort in raising awareness. And we're not talking politics, so people won't have such closed minds.
In Australia at least, the name Beastie Boys is sure to excite people. For the longest time anything to do with the band has been seen as the coolest, most relevant thing one could be associated with. Mentioning the name will spark people to be part of some next shit for sure.
"Oh, Beastie Boys? For Sure!" :D
If this 'grass-roots' movement is going to start, then people are going to have to express their support for the project. And that is what I am doing. If there's even a slight chance it will get the film shown on the big screen; count me in.

I wonder what the ratings will be like when it does come to the big screen? I mean us Beasties fans will go & view it at the cinema, but will other cinema go'ers watch it!? I suppose then on what the marketing is like, how they will promote it especially here in the UK.
Anyway, it's a first in history for a music concert coming to the big screens, so that it may well just have that edge & really work!!....I hope it does!

I think it's cool that people who haven't seen the film yet are willing to promote it. That's devotion. :) What if I told you that I thought you weren't going to like the film, Kid P?
Nah, I'd never say that to anyone. That would be mean. I think you're going to love the film, Kid P. You'll probably say it's better than "Star Wars."
Re volunteering to be on a street team: I would like to see the list of cities they're planning to show the film before I volunteer to do anything. If I am going to volunteer to do anything, it'll be to help coordinate fan efforts. I'll volunteer to provide the goats too.
I question if there's enough of us to be a proper street team. Because of the band's inactivity over the last year and the complete removal of news and info on the web site, the band has lost a lot of fans -- not permanently lost them, but lost contact with them. The deadness of this board is proof of that fact. Communication is the most important thing in any relationship, including the band-fan one, and they haven't been doing it. They're lucky we all don't leave them for another band -- one who gives us a little attention now and then.
First up; haha.
Secondly, I agree. If this board were an accurate indicator of an active fan-base, the Bboys would have roughly 300 fans in the world.
If you're lurking; please register.
Yes, you will be directed to a million old threads regarding the band. Yes, you will have to sink or swim in political or other music. But do it.
