i enjoyed aikido for a few short weeks before i codulnt aford it. its very different from other martial arts though. i dont know what you're looking for. aikido has no punches or kicks, its all blocks, holds, throws, and joint locks. its completely defensive, cant be used for offence. you could definetly hurt someone, but the point of it is to safely disable an attacker and get yourself out of immediate danger, assuming you ever had to actually use it. its good for learning balance and body control. the first thing we learned in my class was how to fall. we practiced falling for almost 2 hours. i have to admit i felt kind of silly when other people walked through the gym and there was a big group of us all rolling around on our backs like turtles. it was fun though. especially getting thrown. maybe thats just me though

it's difficult and very macho and the guys in it will do their best to make you cry. i wouldn't recommend it for you.
start off with something else, like aikido. that and ninjitus are both great for women. tai chi is something to think about to.
i took shorin-ryu karate (an okinawana study) but we had a lot of other influence and sometimes it'd be "jujitsu night" or "aikido night." and then we'd have "ninja night" for the little kids and they'd sleep over and we themselves all over the mat.

it not true what they say about you can use aikido effectivly no matter youre size or strength. i was the only girl in my class and some guys were so tall i coudlnt really throw them over me. i guess im pretty short though, and some of them were REALLY tall.
although it does turn out that i can lift someone over 250lbs on my back *flexes muscles*

aikido was nice and it is a good self defense
i also too tae kwon do, which does wonders for our flexibility, mainly in the legs

sweetie, you did it for a few weeks. of course you couldn't do it perfectly. i did it for six years, and i got reasonably good at it. i could throw boys and men much taller and stronger than myself over my shoulders, and take them down easily when they attacked.

I'm a 9th kup in tae kwon do. I enjoy it. There is all sorts of people in the class - fat, thin, weak, strong, black, white, yellow and even girls. yeah, take one up. It's given more loads more fitness and and is good for confidence and generally knowing how to disarm some1 within seconds.
www.liamtkd.com is my sisters boy friend site - kinda local but is pretty good if you wanna know a little more about it.

fuck martial arts unless you have a sincere interest/need to learn jujitsu grappling on the ground or something.
boxing or kickboxing.
just learn how to brawl in a realistic manner.
think back to ANY fucking fight you have EVER seen in the real world....you don't see people throwing crescent kicks or perfectly dodging a well placed straight punch and executing a hold or throw...
fuck...it's just people throwing fists and brawling, then falling on the floor.

i dont need to learn fighting techiques. as a matter of fact, i need to unlearn how to fight, cause im dirty fighter, and i will kick balls.
i want the discipline that comes with learning martial arts. i want to learn to be more in tune with my body in that respect. but i dont want a completely meditative sort of thing, otherwise i would just do yoga. i like the physicality of martial arts.
i considered krav maga, mostly cause i would love to be feared. hahaha. physically, im not very girly. ive been a tomboy most of my life, and ive almost never played team sports with girls. i kick ass and take names, yes i do. (actually, im just trying to become the next chuck norris.)

It's a Japanese form of MMA (mixed martial art). So it's kickboxing, ju-jitsu, greek-romanian wrestling etc, all put together.
There are several forms (organisations) of MMA.
Like UFC, Pride, Vale Tudo and more. Basicaly the same but with different rules. These are mostly for competition but you become pretty tough.

that's why i took karate. i wasn't a "karate geek." not too many people try to start fights with me. it's nice to have the confidence that i know my way around the human body well enough to inflict some serious pain quickly and efficiently, but the biggest benefit i got from karate truly was the discipline. i would be a very different person today if it wasn't for taking it for so many years when i was so young. i believe it's responsible for the strength of willpower i have today.
i mean, yes, i like kicking ass, but not in the brawl/fight sense of the word. i really enjoy sparring and grappling, where technique wins out, and it's more of a contest and display of skill than a FIGHT. if the opportunity came where i was cornered completely and had no other option but to fight for myself, i would feel sorry for the attacker. :) but the first thing you learn is to avoid situations like that before all else.

i want to do something in the new year martial arts-based. my brother is currently learning brazilian jujitsu and it looks pretty awesome, but i think i need something more, er.. studied. i like the weapon-based martial arts over the grappling/floor-based ones.
i'm seriously considering kendo. i think i would appreciate the footwork and the swordmanship. i have to decide soon because most of the beginners classes start in the new year.
so, any one do any martial arts here? what say you?
p.s. please do not take the piss. i'm no street fighting machine nor do i intend to become one. i just want to learn something new. AWRITE?
I've always wanted to do Kendo 'way of the sword' - but I've always done unarmed martial arts so it'd be different. Do it, I have a feelin sword play will be big in 2009 with the recession and all (lb)

I have taken Kenjutsu for a while since 2006 and its very disciplinary. And expensive, fortunately my grand father had equipment for me to use... A little outdated but still good. I just needed to buy the kendo and sparring gloves. After that I didnt have a lot of chances in joining the classes because I fly back to United States and back to Spain again and again, so I went to train solo by doing another discipline and this time I get use a REAL FUCKING COLD STEEL BLADE, that I still have in my room. So, my grand father became my instructor last year for tameshigiri. I like tameshigiri more than the kendo sparring mostly because I get to use a blade and cut down stuff with focus and furry.
Out of all of the martial arts, I think the best one is Karate. Even though I quit that one, the discipline was ultimately the best of all I have done compared to the one in Kenjutsu

the city i live in is not large enough to cater for every martial art on the planet. i just know i want something weapon-based to start with and there's a kendo dojo here.
yeah, there's money involved, but with my induction fee i get a shinai, so that's okay, i guess. if i continue to the club i'll have to buy the keiko-gi and hakama but that's about fifty bucks for clothing, i guess - not too bad. the bogu body armour costs about £200 upwards though so fuck that shit. i don't care if you look like vega.
i don't care if you look like vega.
surely thats a plus point?
Ok, I've done Karate (two types), random self defense seminars and Tae Kwon Do. I would say for fitness - Tae Kwon Do is by far the winner. Both the karates I've done (I forget the names cus it was years ago and only for a bit) was very undisciplined. Didn't like it at all but then that is not to say there is not some professional clubs out there.
I would do Tae Kwon Do again (no weapons), I'd do self defense seminars again (which does have some weapon training). I wouldn't do karate again. I'd do Kendo if I was you.

I was a brown belt in Wado Kai karate. My sensei gave me his black belt to compete in Japan but I went to Jamica for a mission trip instead.
I'm glad I didn't go to Japan...I heard they were quite the pussies
I still have the black belt too (y)

i'm not really as into the ones that go with weaponry. i've sstill been meaning to get back into tae kwon do, but its just so hard anymore to get into that mind set again. to get into that kind shape as well would be wonderful....
karate always looked so strange to be. it didnt seem as fluid as far as combining moves.
i thought about taking judo at one point too, but who knows if that'll ever happen!

Yeah karate can look choppy. I enjoyed it because it didn't include much grappling/wrestling.....tons of great technique still with the punching, kicking, sweeps, sparring, and kata
It was interesting to see how certain katas were given to different belts throughout the different types of karate

I have to say that, most practitioners in martial arts these days I see (at this town) are usually young kids. I think it will be awkward if an adult joins Karate these days, well in my area in this case. Some friends of mine take Muay Thai, but I wouldnt recommended this to anyone who is delicate or not looking forward to having bruised spots all over your face by the end of the day. Mauy Thai chick are fit :D
Anyways, for adults I would recommend taking a weaponry like kenjustu or a self defense class like judo. In fact, take Judo. Its just much cheaper than taking a weaponry class and not regretting over paying - if you are planning on quitting.

haha, no, looking like vega is pretty bad ass.
muay thai. an ex-colleague of mine was some scottish champ and dude was SERIOUS about training (er, as expected). i think that would be the one to go for if i wanted to get super fucking fit but at the moment i can't be fucked making like rocky each day. kudos to the muay thai people though. that shit takes dedication.

I took SanSu KungFu late last year and early this year. I absolutely hated it: I took it every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. That was one of the few times in my life when I could honestly say that I didn't mind Mondays. KungFu Jim also had classes every other Saturday. My Friday nights are pretty sacred to me so I was usually going to sleep by the time they were starting classes. I earned my Green Belt but that's enough for me. Basically you learn how to kick someones ass within 3 hits and the fights over. After you learn various combinations of those 1st 3 hits then lesson is over.
If you're looking to lose weight then religiously hit one of those walk machines(nothing crazy work up to 7 K's and 20 K's on a bike), push weights and quit drinking beer and you'll see results quick fast and in a hurry.
Yea, I know: Quit drinking Beer? That's crazy talk.

NO MERCY.
seriously, I wasnt even in a dojo. I was at the fucking mountains chopping off wet mattes in the middle of forest. My Grandfather is fucking crazy oldschool. I would do it again though. It was fun.
The only thing I want to know out fighting moves is just one simple thing. How to make some one go to sleep by gripping some part of the shoulder... Or is it just some fake thing used to often on TV?
in TKD its a Dojang - not a dojo.
Don't make that mistake too much round TKD enthusiasts ;)

There good to newcomers. Its mainly those who are just one art only and everything else sucks. 19-24 year old male black belts these who haven't been in a 'real' sparring session yet
