I like this exchange quite a bit.

Letter to the editor, from a local magazine, called THE WAVE:

Well, there you go again. In your last issue, you took a few cheap shots at those lovable dogs called chihuahuas. [Volume 6, Issue 1, “Beware of (Tiny) Dog(s)”] This follows a story you ran a few months ago, wherein you took a few cheap shots at pitbulls. What do you guys have against dogs? I don’t know why you would want to adopt such an anti-animal stance as this, but I think it is unbecoming of your magazine.

Whether you want to admit it or not, dogs provide their owners with immeasurable joy and companionship. What may seem like a vicious beast to you is merely a loyal, devoted friend attempting to protect its owner from any harm. Do you really think that chihuahuas are dangerous? Do you really think that the public needs to be warned about chihuahuas? So, then, why would you print such an outrageous story that will only turn the public against these peaceful creatures.

I think you owe it to all dog owners everywhere to apologize to them for your continuous taunts and childish ridicule. Pets are people, too!

Judy Carson,
Santa Clara

First of all, pets are not people, too. They are pets. Pets don’t get their feelings hurt by jokes, people do. Pets don’t confuse lighthearted anecdotes in our magazine as personal attacks on their integrity, people do. And, finally, pets never try and justify their feelings by anthropomorphizing pets, people do. That said, we’re still not sure what you’re so upset about. The worst thing we said about chihuahuas was that they were “pint-sized” (oooh, burn). It was the animal hospital employee who called them “land sharks,” not us. Maybe you should take up your issues with them.

I'd be ashamed to get burned via print media.

...this magazine isn't always the best, but it's kind of guaranteed to be smart-ass in reply to things.

It's just always kind of funny when the reader, feeling righteous, has no clue how easily they can be taken apart.
