Being in reference to gay in the club scene? Well, my friend is planning on opening his own club in New York and the name of it is called "The Blue Rhyno."

He's already got tons of money invested into it and a building where the club is and it's currently under construction I.E, putting the bar and dance floor and such in it.

Problem is, he's content on keeping the name but I've heard it a couple times that blue can mean gay. For instance, on Police Acadamy, the club was called, not the Green Oyster, but, the Blue Oyster and sure enough, there was a whole crowd of yard darts inside.

So should I try to persuade him into changing the name or is this just some random hearsay I've been picking up on?

If there's one thing I've learned it's that the police academy movies hold the answers to all of life's mysteries

"Where did you learn English?"

"College. And the Police Academy movies."

Anyway, I know that in Russian the word "goluboi" (which means blue) is sometimes used to refer to gay men. Sort of like the English "fruit".

I take it your friend is not familiar with the "blueboy" magazine market.

I say, let him go with it. Gay clubs are usually more fun, anyway.

Gives the song "Am I Blue?" a whole new twist.

But seriously, I've never heard of blue=gay.

But, speaking of Twist -- I wonder if "bottom" and "top" will now become "Jack" and "Ennis."

"Who do you want to be tonight?"

"I'll be Ennis."

"You're always Ennis!"

etc.

I've never heard of that.

It would ruin my e-name if this becomes widespread though.

If I encountered a bar/club called The Blue something, I would pretty much assume it was gay.

Or at least I would think it might well be gay so I would give it a miss.

Its not so much that blue=gay but a bar/club with that kind of name is assumed to be gay I think.

I would definately change that name! Unless thats the sort of place he wants

Yeah, even if Blue didn't mean gay club, "Blue Rhyno" sounds pretty god damn homo.

Anyway, aren't homos supposed to have rainbows? Fuck that, they don't get rainbows AND blue!

Hey, don't get me wrong. I also think the name of the bar is kinda gay sounding but, it wouldn't be too wise on my part to tell him. Rafael is a 6'4" black guy with kinda a short fuse..

if it were the Pink Rhino I might think it was gay...but blue doesn't really give me any sexual prefernce at all.

In Guernivelle, the gay captiol north of SF, we have a bar called the rainbow cattle company. that one is pretty obvious. I couldn't think of any gay clubs in SF with the word Blue in the name either.

HOWEVER.... I found this...

blue moon gay resort (http://www.bluemoonlv.com/)

and

blue door gay greeting cards (http://www.bluedoorcollection.com/2003/index.htm)

and...
straight from the Istanbul gay scene.... (http://www.istanbulgay.com/bluemovie.htm)

also I did find out that "blue movie" is a slang for porn...however it encompases all porn not just gay/bi porn.

Blue Velvet (1986) directed by David Lynch - starring Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern is a bizarre movie.
