haha! I use to be a bartender.

it's not all fun and games you know. Just wait until you get your first big rush and 20 people all want a drink from you immediately and they are pissing and moaning about it and you wish you had six hands. then it's not so fun anymore, cause you won't have time to chitty-chat-chat with the customers. and then you'll get to remake a bunch of drinks, because the bitch who asked for a martini without out vermooth (which isn't even a fucking martini, it's just vodka or gin shaken over ice) insists that there is vermoth in her drink when you know there isn't.

Sorry, don't mean to be a kill joy. most of the time Bartending is fun, but we'll see if it's still your dream job after you've been doing it for a year.

Cheers!

i'm guilty of it too, and it's not that i'm a cheapskate, it's that i can't afford it. i mean, the prices are so damn high to begin with, if i tipped generously on top of it i wouldn't have enough money to come back the next night. i usually just leave something after my last drink, just so i'm not the cheap asshole that doesn't tip at all

I understand and agree Bob. I didn't tip or I didn't tip well when i was a student either or when I was too broke. However, surprisingly most of the wealthy customers really don't tip well either. The bar I worked in was part of a moderate-high priced restaurant, and we bartenders often got the shaft on tips no matter how good of service we gave. Sometimes people who were eating at the bar would refuse to tip us because the food took too long, and we had nothing to do with that, it was the kitchen that was backed up and not geting food up in a reasonable fashion. It was mainly the faithful regulars who we made our tip profit from.

the best tippers in the world are people who have also worked in the industry as a bartender or server. they know how hard it can be and they tip accordingly. However, they are also the most unforgiving if you screw up.

I can totally respect the fact that students cant really afford to tip.

In my case, it would be rude not to tip because I make decent wages and my bills are very minimal.

My wife had a hard time adapting to the whole tipping scene because in China, they don't tip so I had to explain to her that their pay is very low becaues most of their income is dependant on tips.

i dunno about every campus, but on mine, it seems that chicks tip male bartenders, and drunk chicks tip very well.

even if i dont get tips, the ladies are worth it.

That is so true! I've got loads of friends who are bartenders on the ferries and they tip like mad!
I don't usually tip at bars (I'm too poor to do that), but at restaurants I do tip if the food is good and I'm satisfied with the service.
Someone said that when you're in a bar give a big tip when buying your first drink you'll get quicker service the whole evening...
Here the restaurant and bar people aren't relying on tips, they get paid enough anyway, but of course they put the prices to 49,-, 79.- or similar so you don't wanna grab the last krona but rather leave it there...

Ah, cultural differences.

I made about 20p tips on new years eve/day (I work 10pm till 3am) (y)

I hear its kind of mandatory to tip in the US. The bar I work at sometimes gets americans, theres a air base in the next city, and I think they now know they dont have to tip us. But when they do tip it can be quite alot.

Incidently there was this one time a guy asked me if I was gay so I said "are you interested?" He laughed and gave me all his spare change (about £8). I felt dirty afterwords though.

The only tipping I use to do after drinking at a nightclub was aiming my tip towards a urinal and then back to the dance floor and afterwards drink some more.

Thank god we dont tip in Australia. Bartenders, particularly casual ones, get a high pay rate as it is...which is what makes the drinks so expensive.

I loved being a bartender, it was great fun. I mean I'm sure it depends quite a lot on the environment and all, but I had a blast. Made lots of money, met lots of people, heard lots of great music, it was all good really (y)

Not a job that I'd want to do now that I'm all old and stuff, but at the time it was bloody brilliant.

yep. Before I was a server, I'd tip okay I guess, but now I tip at least 20% I almost never tip under that unless they were just awful i.e. super rude and didn't even try to be attentive, etc.
