View Full Version : what constitutes an alcoholic?
how many drinks do you have to have per day or week to be a fullblown lush?
If you are unsure ....... I recommend getting some help. Admitting you have a problem (even in this roundabout way you did) is the first step.
you fucking drunk.

this type of question can progress in many different ways.
For instance, socially. You can drink as much as a case of beer in one day while with your friends and not drink till the next week to not be considered as an alcoholic.
If you do that type of thing alone, for sure, you're an alcy.
I guess it's up to you on how you would catagorize it.
Me, I work long hours. 13 hours a day and when I come home, I drink 3 beers before I go to bed. On the weekends, I pretty much get drunk. Would you consider me as an alcy? I don't. I look at it like this, I spend more time at work than I do at home and in the duration, I'm more sober than drunk..
Well they say 2 drinks a day for a male and one drink a day for a female is healthy. So I guess anything over that is unhealthy? But does unhealthy really make you an alcoholic? i dunno.
And I guess how you are in life adds to it as well. Meaning, if you have a few beers a night for a week and still make it to school and work and then go a month without thinking about a drink means you are aok.
But if you go a few drinks a night for a week and don't drink for a day or two and get the DTs you are in trouble.
actually...im sort of drunk right now so I don't think any of this is making sense.

I had a couple of Oak Barrel Stouts and some Oak Barrell Mileniums for lunch. That shit makes me feel funny.
As far as my usual intake...it varies.
Sometimes I go a couple of weeks with just a couple of drinks.
Sometimes I don't drink anything until the weekend and have a lot of drinks in one night.
But at least once a year...I have a week that I spend every night plastered. Its never planned, but just happens that way.
And counting how many drinks you have is for nancy boys.

My answer is this...
If you feel that you can't function through normal life without having a drink..
If your job has you stressed to the point that when you come home, you have to have a drink to erase the memories of work...
If your relationship with your wife/ husband concludes you to having a drink to find the answers...
If you find yourself drinking while having memories of the past...
It goes on and on and yeah, go ahead and consider yourself an alcolholic just as like 80 percent of all America's population.

I drink probably 2 nights during the week on average and usually both weekend nights. Of those 4 nights of drinking I probably get drunk on one of them. I usually drink 2-3 well drinks or glasses of wine (the 42 oz margarita I had with dinner on tuesday notwithstanding.)

It's not about quantity, it's about desire.
You can be an alcoholic purely because you have to have a drink every morning or you feel you can't make it through the day.

multiple personalities is also a sign of alcoholism

I believe alcholism begins when someone decides that they need alcohol to function properly. I think alcoholism can also have different forms... some which are serious and some which aren't so serious.
I'd like to generalize that if you have a drink every single day that would make you an alocholic, but for some reason I just can't do it. Maybe it's because I'm in college and I know several people who drink on a daily basis... However, I do know that if they weren't in college, I think it would be cause for some concern.
That's just me though.

I think if you "have to" or "need to" then there is a problem. See how long your friend ;) can go without drinking.
i have no idea. he, i mean she, hasn't said.
I don't drink enough according to my friends.

Yeah. Like eric and squirrel and some others have said, it's not so much about quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption so much as it is about your overall attitude towards life. If it's used as a coping mechanism of any sort, you've probably got a problem.

The judge made my mind up. I lived in my car down by the canal off and on for a few years. Blackouts became more normal than not. One became too many, a thousand not enough. I had no mailbox. I drank at the Blue Moon for 5 years straight and Everybody knew my name. I wasted my one phone call down at the King County jailhouse because, let's face it, everyboody had already heard the story before. I'll just sit it out. Court ordered treatment twice and I was still in denial. Quitting alcohol and drugs is the hardest thing I ever did in my life, I am indebted to AA and thousands upon thousands of people who became involved enough to tell me I was full of shit. I became an alcoholic the day I admitted I was an alcoholic, my life now KICKS ASS!
I drank to excess from age 13 until I was 26, on a daily basis progressively getting worse till I was chronic.
I'm not shy at saying I was all fucked up. And still am to some degree. Hey, but at least now I'm sober. Bitches.

What a story - congrats on recovery. I really enjoy drinking while I'm drinking but find the hungover feeling too damn painful to do it too often.

What constitutes an alcoholic ?
Someone who is out of toilet paper but buys more beer with their money and "pinches" a roll from the nearest fast food restroom on the way home - no kidding.

I've flirted with, slowdanced with and even fingerbanged alcholism in the past.
I haven't had a drink for a fortnight.
I don't miss it.

i probably have a drink 2-4 nights a week, but its usually 1 or 2 drinks and thats it.
it can take me up to an hour to top off a beer, and longer for something mixed. i drink slow, and nothing too heavy.
i've been drunk twice. once for my birthday, and the other at theonly frat party i've ever gone too.

I drink 2-3 nights per week. Like most university students, I'm a binge drinker. While I was living in a share house (we were housesitting for about 3 months) we pretty much drank 6-10 beers every night, and more on weekends. It built up my tollerance, but made me really unfit for a while.

Until you're drunk again!
I did the normal binge drinking university student thang until i found out that 5 few years of hard drinking gave me liver damage.
Too bad, i've always wanted an alcoholics big red pocked nose

for some reason, I can never finish a drink when I'm by myself. I've tried just to relax after work or school and I can never do it. I end up just switching to water and playing video games or something.
My Grandfathers wife was over years ago and at 7am, everyday, she'd crack open a beer, and keep drinking until it was bed time. She spaced them out enough that she didn't act ridiculous, but still.
I think that's pushing it a little.

a little?
alcoholism is being addicted to alcohol.
my dad's an alcoholic. booze turned him into a monster, but he just kept drinking and drinking. I think when you drink and don't even enjoy it and end up hurting other people, you're definitely an alcoholic.
myself, I drink about 3 nights a week. usually 3 drinks or more (5 last night). I drink to get drunk, and sometimes I do think I may have a substance abuse problem, because if I'm not drunk, I'm usually high. But I don't think I'm addicted because if I've got something important to do, I won't drink or smoke the night before and I can go for quite awhile without either. when I lost my job, I got really drunk the first night, but then played it straight until I got another job (about 3 weeks later).

my gram has 1 beer every day at 3pm while she watches guiding lite. and she has been doing this for as long as i can remember.
its also the reason why i met her on my 21st at 3pm and had a shot of tequila when i walked through the door

The way it seems to go for me... More Work = More Drinkin
It's definately a coping mechanism. A damn good one at that.
This evening I've had 2 Moscow Mules (http://www.drinkboy.com/Cocktails/recipes/MoscowMule.html) and I'm feelin a'ight. Think I'll mix up 1 more and sleep like no tomorrow.

Agreed. Example: Waking up and cracking open a beer or pouring some kind of alcholic beverage to get you started for the day....or the 'need' to have a drink every day.
I go through stages...every now and again I'll have weeks of drinking heavily each saturday night, or even fri and sat night.
Then I'll have weekends where I don't drink at all. I hardly ever drink during the week, unless my mates and I hit a club on a Wednesday night, and I have no work or study the next day...then I'll have a few. Apart from that, I've never really felt the 'need' to drink, unless I'm going through a hard time - then I may feel some kind of a need to have an alcoholic beverage just to calm me down a little.
I dislike the type that go out, purchase 2 or 3 drinks for themselves at the same time and skull them, just to get drunk. I drink because I find it enjoyable and relaxing.
