i do shotokan, but im interested in hearing how karate helped or didnt help you and which styles you like, and also weather you have competed and whether you've seen kids getting pushed to hard in tournaments by parents or coaches.

i did shorin-ryu karate for six years. i loved it. i only went to a tournament and competed once - i wasn't really all that into it. and it was when i was a brown belt, so i waited a long time. my senseis had encouraged me to go. i went to a really friendly and family-oriented dojo, so i never felt any pressure to be some great competitor like you would at smaller dojos. i kind of choked at the tourney, though. all the women i was competing against were at least fourth-level black belt, and i was barely a brown/white belt. i got nervous and forgot a move in the middle of my black belt kata and it showed on my face. i came in fifth place...out of five :(

awww... thats ok. i also go to a friendly dojo its small but we all get along, our sensei does push us but only a little bit he never goes too hard. i've only competed twice the 1st time i ame last in kata and kumite, and the second time it was a comp only for kata and i came second! but it was kind of frightening bcoz the father of the boy who came last was swearing and harassing me bcoz his son did badly so yea i hate it wen parents are like that.

I took tae kwon do when I was four. Got my yellow belt and quit because my new instrucotr was a sexist pig. My mom quit that day too because of him. A few years later my parents started Hap Ki Do (I'm sure I got that wrong) and after a while the original instrucotr quit and my parents and a kickboxer named Benny took over. (y)

I taught myself karate by watching Karate Kid. I'm a 28th level black belt now.

I was able to do the crane kick or whatever the fuck it's called perfectly. I should practice it again.

haha, yea keep practicing! the one thing i dont get is everyone thinks that only girls who do karate have good self defense but its not that hard you kick em real hard in the balls and punch em it the face for good measure then you run like hell.

Third-degree blackbelt in Mortal Kombat, and a straight-up black belt in Street Fighter 2.

lol, unfortunatley for you were talking about real fighting.

have any of u guys ever actually used karate out of the dojo, to hurt someone for self defense or anything?
