View Full Version : The Muslim case in the West is not being helped.

There is already a stereotype and predjudice against Muslims in Europe/USA. The recent violent protests/torching of Danish embassies hardly helps promote the message that Islam is a peaceful relgion. Discuss.

I don't understand the Moslems going so mad. If they don't like it,
nobody forces them to look at that caricature. They should take
it easy, 'cause if their religion's the right one, the danish guy who
drew that stuff will go to hell, not them...

Ace42X

Its stigmatism. These people are labeled, and simply "not complaining" won't help matters. Anti-Jewish stereotypes persist without them all being covetous, etc. Likewise, the stereotypes ascribed to the Muslims will persist even if they don't do anything.

So, considering that they have been, and are, and will be stereotyped ANYWAY, what is the incentive for them *not* to?

They're copping the grief from prejudice, whether they are guilty of the charges laid against them or not, so what's to stop them?

If they speak out and take action and get themselves heard, the racists will do what, exactly? Continue to racially abuse them? They don't need an excuse to, and will do anyway.

I don't understand the Moslems going so mad. If they don't like it,
nobody forces them to look at that caricature.

Could say that about people burning flags...

So you are saying that when someone is stereotyped it is their prerogative to act up to this stereotype, somehow in order to dispel the stereotype?

It's called "labeling theory" - volumes of sociological research have been done into it. When someone is labeled, there are strong social pressures to conform to that role.

Honestly, I don't care if they burn a German flag. I don't like
the colors anyway ;) I just hate the agression - on both sides.

From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4676632.stm

Dr Lam Akol is the Sudanese foreign minister. Sudan called for a boycott of Danish goods and called off the visit of a Danish minister

There is a problem in that you need to be mindful of what other people think and believe and feel. The world is becoming like a village, you can't suppress what is being published in the West from the Third World.

It is very important when people want to promote religious dialogue and co-existence to avoid such issues.

In the Third World they hardly separate between what is a journalist and what is the Danish government's point of view.

Once a Danish paper has published something then it is concluded that this is the opinion of everybody in Denmark. So that is the kind of feeling that should have been understood from the beginning.

If the Islamic world believes that "once a Danish paper has published something then it is concluded that this is the opinion of everybody in Denmark" then surely that means that the people burning down embassies will realise that what they are doing will be taken for the actions and consensus of an entire religion... swings and roundabouts... what a mess.

However:

Has Muslim reaction to the cartoons been uniform?

Not at all - some Muslims have accused protesters of overreacting.

A weekly newspaper in Jordan reprinted some of the cartoons and urged Muslims to "be reasonable".

Websites produced by and for Muslims have shown the cartoons or linked to them. One liberal website said Muslims were making a mountain out of a molehill.

Some Muslims, mainly in Europe, have supported the re-publication of the images so that individual Muslims can make their own minds up and welcomed the debate on the issues that that cartoons have raised.

It has also been pointed out that cartoons in the Arab and Islamic press "demonising" Jews and Israelis are common.

You know, when one of my gorgeous little 14-year-old ASBO kids tells me "Yeah miss I fuckin stole it, them lot wuz lookin at me like they wuz finkin I were gonna nick it anyways so I fuckin done it innit," I don't really accept that as an excuse from them, either.

I just think that they don't even have a clue as to what religion they are or what it is to support their religion. The only true Muslim I've ever seen were the older/middle class generation.

The younger ones are surely lost in what they believe in. Especially the ones that were raised in the wealthy oil rich countries. They weren't raised by their parents. They were raised by their maids. If I had a dollar for everytime that my wife and I walked anywhere in public and they whistled or made kissy noises to her and made comments such as, "massage", to her which means they're looking for a hooker. Most of these comments were made while they were in traditional dress and had their prayer beads in hand..

That and the fact that I'm wearing my tasmanian devil underoos and I farted and it sounded just like, "Allah eats bacon for breakfast" not to mention the shape of the skid mark it left behind.. It kinda resembled muhammed wanking one off.
