...renting movies by mail.
They've got different plans, but basically, you pay a flat monthly fee and they send you movies and return envelopes.
So, I think I pay $15 a month, and I can rent as many movies as I want but I can have two at a time at most. When I finish a movie, I pop it in their prepaid envelope, drop it in the mail, and have the next movie on my want list in three days, usually. It's pretty cool.

Ooh we have those here as well, can't remember what they're called tho. I don't have a DVD player (except on my computer) so I've never bothered to check for any movies, don't like watching movies on a small screen.
Oh yeah and here they are actually cheaper, like $3-5 a month, and you can have at least three at home at the same time (the postage is the same up to three cd's I think). So actually I really should sign up as well, it is so cheap.

The Incredibles wasn't exactly incredible, but it was pretty good. It should be called The Pretty Goods.
I watched Broken Flowers last night. It was kinda slow, but amusing at points. I liked it overall. It reminded me of About Schmidt a little. You might like it.

God, I think they're just awful.
The Usual Suspects is okay, actually. I lump it in with LA Confidential when I'm being reflexive. It's an okay movie that people are nuts about, so that makes it seem worse than it is.
LA Confidential is just fucking awful, though. It's so, so trite, and full of plot developments that only happen in screenplays. By the time the good D.A. suddenly hops in bed with Basinger just to fulfill a plot requirement, COMPLETELY out of character, my crowd was laughing pretty hard in between groans.
The dialogue sounds like a first-year college student trying to crib from Chinatown or Force of Evil or something, with none of the poetry or wit.
Just awful.

I saw Where The Heart Is in theaters. I remember making that "I'm in extreme physical pain and this lemon wedge in my mouth isn't really helping" face at least 100 times over the course of what felt like 8 or 9 hours. I hadn't felt that sick since watching Waiting To Exhalew a few years before it.

Did you ever see How Stella Regained Her Groove (it was titled something like that)? Everybody had such long lists I couldn't get through all of them, but there's loads that I'd love to see if I had the time!
I still haven't watched through all the films I taped back in 96 when I was lying in bed for three months and got free cable film channel for that time, 24 hours of movies! Of course there's some that I've seen loads of times, I love Almodovar as well, and it's good for studying Spanish ;)
and the other week I accidently taped half an hour over Ghost World!
Over the weekend I was supposed to go to see a preview of Amir Chamdin's (from Infinite Mass / video director) first ever movie staring Nina Person from the Cardigans, but I was ill (I missed Foo Fighters as well on Saturday, couldn't even stand up for five minutes, was so ill, so not having any money made no difference) which I would've loved to see. Now I have to pay a whole cinema ticket to see it....

I am soooooo glad to see The Usual Suspects getting some hate. That was one of the most disappointing movies I ever saw in a theater. I also disliked Lost in Translation. But I loved Secretary and liked LA Confidential (except for the end). I thought 8 Mile was okay.
Oh, and The Insider is a great movie with great performances. Plus I'm a sucker for movies about journalists.

The Bicycle Thief - It was good, but I've never understood the worship--then, I'm not a film student
Reservoir Dogs - the good bits are really good, but it's not nearly as cool now that we all know who Quentin is
Blue Velvet - I suspect that you had to be there
Mulholland Drive - one of those special movies that I expected to hate but got completely sucked in
North by Northwest - OMG--nearly perfect
Igby Goes Down - I dragged a bunch of friends to it and I was the only one who liked it
The Believer - Bad movie with great performance
Pi: Faith in Chaos - I finally tried to watch this last week and got about 30 minutes in
The Battle of Algiers - I can't remember why this is on my list
Pulp Fiction - I think this one stands the test of time, even if you know Quentin now, but the bad bits are bad
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore I <3 70s movies! They wouldn't make this today.
Mr. Mom "220, 221, whatever it takes" -- one of those rare movies that wasn't great when it came out but it gets better every time you see it

....somebody has to come out with an undubbed version. I don't know if it would be any better -- Italian movies from this period are notorious for horrible dubbing, even in their native language -- but this one was unwatchable, to me.

I've enjoyed a few of Cameron Crowe movies, but there's always something too hokey about all of his films. Even the ones I've liked a lot. ...Open Your Eyes' lead guy has actual charisma, though. That makes his narcissism a lot easier to take than Cruise's, and kind of makes or breaks either film, I think. I thought it was a way better movie.

I thought the guy was ok.
But I personally don't mind Tommy boy. I know that that kinda goes against the hip popular consensus, but he knows how to carry a film. Even a really bad one. Ok, except MI2. But most of the rest of his resume sort of speaks for itself. And his presence on the screen, whether it lacks charisma or not, is what's always set him apart from his eighties and nineties counterparts. Which is why he never became an Emilio or a Charlie or a Patrick or a Rob and can still draw an audience and demand the big bucks.

I think he's been really good a few times -- Risky Business, Magnolia, and waaaayyyy underrated in carrying the ball on Rain Man. But when he's trying to act up a storm, I think he's pretty unwatchable. To wit: The Last Samurai.

03-08-2006, 12:21 PM
But even that performance was watchable, at least. I do think it started out horribly, but by the second act I wasn't really thinking about his acting anymore.
I agree with you on the other films. I also thought he played a more convincing vampire in "Interview..." than Brad Pitt. But when he's cast alongside vets such as Newman, Nicholson, Hackman and to a lesser degree, Hoffman it sort of magnifies his weaknesses and minimizes his strengths.

Vampirism+homoeroticism=too much for me; I never bothered with it.
But when he's cast alongside vets such as Newman, Nicholson, Hackman and to a lesser degree, Hoffman it sort of magnifies his weaknesses and minimizes his strengths.
...pretty much, yeah. except I disagree about him with Dustin Hoffman; I think he actually made Hoffman's performance work.
I think I've told the story about The Firm, but... when Hackman found out that Cruise was contractually getting top billing solo, Hackman said, fine -- don't use my name or likeness at all. That's why he's not on the poster or in the trailer. It was a surprise to me when he showed up and kept me in my seat for that piece of shit.

Blood Simple's up there. Intolerable Ctuelty is.... it's okay. It's got its moments.
If you can possibly find the original version of Blood Simple (NOT the director's cut), it's actually better. They cut out a bad actor pretty much, but with his stuff gone, the movie seems more mean-spirited, I think.

Blood Simple is my favorite Coen Brothers movie. I didn't like most of the Coen Brothers movies though. There are always a few things that work but many that I'd want to change.
I saw it when it was released, when it played in a local theater because the boys had raised a lot of local money to make it happen. Because it was so low budget, and because I had no idea who Frances McDormand was (or anyone other than M. Emmet Walsh), I probably had low expectations. I wound up getting really hooked by the story. It's nearly perfect for what it is and what it was trying to be. I saw it again on video when it first came out and I was disappointed that they had changed a song in it, but that was no big deal. I can't believe they would change it radically, and if as A-Z says they cut out the lead actor (who was bad but it works because it makes him more real) then I have no idea what it would be like.

Star Wars: Episode 2 was better than episode 1. But parts of it were like watching someone play a video game. Then I watched some of the special features and it was all about how they never could have done this when making the first series of movies, how they didn't have the technology, how it couldn't have been done because they didn't have the budget. I guess back then he was forced to actually make good movies, and make things that looked real.

Actually, it's just like Blockbuster Online, or vicey-versie.
You pay a flat rate for a certain plan (say, $19/month for three movies out at a time). They provide postage both ways -- you watch a movie, send it back, wait a couple (or few) days, and another has arrived.
Both places will screw with you if you try to rent "too many," even though they advertise "unlimited rentals." Netflix is still settling a class action suit about that one. They "throttle" cutsomers who return movies too quickly.

Also...i believe a major difference between blockbuster and netflix is that you can rate movies and see what your homeboys and homegirls got in their queue and what they rated. thats pretty neato. dude.

You can rate movies at Blockbuster (and use half-stars, too, which is cool), but I don't know if a buddy list is part of their redesign.
One thing I don't like about Blockbuster online is that even after you've rated movies (even rating them poorly), Blockbuster might still recommend them to you. That's messed up.

I didn't know they had that going on in the DVD. Honestly, I just like watching people die in weirdly elaborate ways. Which explains why I really liked the first two movies despite the pretty thin plot.
Plus I didn't get to see it in the theatres, so I want to see how awesome this rollercoaster beginning is.

I bet he bakes people into cookies, or somehow rolls them out like dough and cuts them up, or something that isn't physically possible except for his magic evilness making it happen, like what happens in the Leprechaun movies.
From IMDB
Plot Outline: An evil yet adorable Gingerbread man comes to life with the soul of a convicted killer - this real life cookie monster wreaks havoc on the girl who sent the killer to the electric chair
Goofs: Factual errors: The gun, which should only hold a very limited number of shots, is fired roughly twenty or more times through out the movie, without being reloaded
That's the same plot from Child's Play! Sounds good to me.
Check out the Memorable Quotes page. This movie actually sounds pretty good.

From All Movie Guide:
Plot Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
A deranged psychopath returns from the grave in the form of a delicious but deadly treat in B-movie specialist Charles Band's bloody tale of baked goods gone bad. When psychotic killer Millard Findlemeyer (Gary Busey) entered a small-town diner and rained a shower of lead upon the Leigh family, the only family member to survive the horrifying ordeal was devoted daughter Sara Leigh (Robin Sydney). It was Sara's heartfelt testimony that sent Findlemeyer to fry in the electric chair, and also caused the killer's vengeful mother to cook up a diabolical plot for the ultimate revenge. After placing an ancient curse on her son's ashes, Mrs. Findlemeyer mixes the remains into a secret gingerbread cookie recipe and has the malicious mix sent to Sara Leigh's bakery. When bakery employee Brick Fields (Jonathon Chase) cuts himself while preparing the cookies and a drop of his blood spills into the mix, a twelve-inch tall terror emerges from the oven determined to finish the job that he failed to complete the first time around.
Review by Jeremy Wheeler
Anyone familiar with Charles Band and his Full Moon company knows not to expect too much from the modern-day Roger Corman, but one can't help but be disappointed by The Gingerdead Man, a brilliantly kitschy concept that's been shorted a few key ingredients on its ride to previously viewed DVD racks everywhere. The mere idea of Gary Busey as a killer gingerbread cookie is enough of a sell for most like-minded cheese-lovers to garner some interest, but the execution of the flick leaves much to be desired. First off, there's not enough Busey for your buck, and when he's eventually turned into the tasty killing machine on the cover, the audience is left with just plain dumb one-liners when the cookie puppet is finally let loose. Best not look for much gore or even a full running time in this sucker either; Gingerdead Man clocks in at a brisk 71 minutes -- and that's with end credits that give new meaning to the phrase "crawl."
