I have a real weakness for songs that define the downers in life. So many great songs out there that seem happy to some people actually make me sad.
What songs got you through a bad breakup; songs to get drunk to (but only by yourself in a darkened room); songs with great emotional memories attached, songs that make you tear up when you hear them on the radio — you get the picture.
Here are some of my emotional wreckage favorite songs,
GhostTown - the Specials
The Impression That I Get - the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Downbound Train tied Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen
50% of anything by the Eels
Girlfriend in a Coma - the Smiths*
Photograph - the Cure
A Fond Farewell - Elliot Smith
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
Fairytale of New York - the Pogues
What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie
Easy to be Hard - from the soundtrack for "Hair"
Major Tom - David Bowie
Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
Bob Dylan - All of Time Out of Mind + Lay Lady Lay + scads of others.
Be my Baby - the Ronnettes
The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
Don't Forget To Dance - the Kinks (about his breakup with Chrissie Hynde)
Here Comes a Regular - the Replacements
That's my shortlist, I have a thousand of them but I'd sure would like you to share the misery so I can have some more.
*P.S. The Smiths take win, place and show in the "self-pity-driven crying jag whilst drunk and depressed in a dark room" derby. But only by the sheer numbers, plus usually they are equally as hilarious as sad.
