I have a real weakness for songs that define the downers in life. So many great songs out there that seem happy to some people actually make me sad.

What songs got you through a bad breakup; songs to get drunk to (but only by yourself in a darkened room); songs with great emotional memories attached, songs that make you tear up when you hear them on the radio — you get the picture.

Here are some of my emotional wreckage favorite songs,

GhostTown - the Specials
The Impression That I Get - the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Downbound Train tied Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen
50% of anything by the Eels
Girlfriend in a Coma - the Smiths*
Photograph - the Cure
A Fond Farewell - Elliot Smith
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
Fairytale of New York - the Pogues
What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie
Easy to be Hard - from the soundtrack for "Hair"
Major Tom - David Bowie
Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
Bob Dylan - All of Time Out of Mind + Lay Lady Lay + scads of others.
Be my Baby - the Ronnettes
The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
Don't Forget To Dance - the Kinks (about his breakup with Chrissie Hynde)
Here Comes a Regular - the Replacements

That's my shortlist, I have a thousand of them but I'd sure would like you to share the misery so I can have some more.

*P.S. The Smiths take win, place and show in the "self-pity-driven crying jag whilst drunk and depressed in a dark room" derby. But only by the sheer numbers, plus usually they are equally as hilarious as sad.

Yeah I agree with most of those, particularly the smiths, bowie's major tom and joy division...but the mighty mighty bosstones is a pump up, uplifting sorta song for me.

Downbound Train tied Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen

I believe it's Downtown Train, and I would rather listen to the Tom Waits version.

"Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)" - White Stripes

...I haven't gone through a breakup since that song came out, but as soon as I heard it, I was like, "Sigh." :(

GMA']I believe it's Downtown Train, and I would rather listen to the Tom Waits version.

Two similiar titles is all Bruce (http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/DownboundTrain.html), I like Tom's song as well, equal but different in IMHO,
Tom Waits has many qualifiers in the sad song categories;

(a) Drunks
(b) Breakups
(c) Loneliness
(d) Tenderness

Tom Waits in an interview said that the best way to hear music is when your walking down say, Sunset Blvd, and some cat is walking toward you with a transistor radio to his ear listening to the Ronnettes it just opens the imagination. The days when cats like Phil Spector were producing hits to fire your imagination with a 6 transistor radio.

Accidently Like a Martyr - Warren Zevon
The Boxer - Paul Simon
Nowhere Man - the Beatles

No list of sad things is complete without Hank Williams!! Practically every song he performed. ;)

"Accident Prone" by Jawbreaker really gives me a lump in the throat, as well. :(

It's so stupid, but "Chocolate Salty Balls" from South Park was played at my best friend's funeral and it still makes me feel a bit weepy.
