Good evening folks. Today I was fortunate enough to be one of the videographers for the Letterman performance. Many spoilers are below so you may want to stop reading if you want to be suprised..

Jon Doran (eternal thanks my friend) hit me up last night with the oppurtunity to reprise my role as a camera operator. I arrived at 2:00pm and got a chance to hangout with lyneday and youngremmy again. Quality peeps, your company and conversation is always enjoyed. I met with Jon at 3:00 and had the oppurtunity to meet MMM and his wife. They are such down to earth people. It was a nice conversation. MMM's wife was actually filming the dress rehearsals with her own video camera.

The beasties ran through their performance three times during rehearsal.. They perform thirty seconds of 3 MC's before going into So Whatcha Want. Mix Master cut into Fabolous's Breathe, Jadakiss's Knock Yourself Out, and a couple of basic break beats. I can't say he cut into those beats during the filmed performance because I was too busy filming.

For anyone who wants to know, tonights performance will be similiar to the brass monkey video, but with no post production effects, just cuts as there isn't time to add those in 4 hours. Letterman and Paul Shafer had their own video cameras and played with them in the beginning of the show as well as filmed the beasties. Dave really seemed to be a fan. There were a few other camera operators but they were all tied to the show. I would say their were 6 hi eight cameras total, plus the regular television cameras.

I got an oppurtunity to speak with yauch after the performance who actually knew my board name. He is such a stickler for detail he spent time after the performance making sure letterman's sound team had the sound up to par. Yauch was repping Oscilloscope with one of the studios t-shirts.

No couch time, and the chick they interview is a pretty boring time.

Jon, thanks for another great experience and definitely hope to see you around this summer. Remmy and Lyneday, I'm glad we had the oppurtunity to sit together. You guys are true fans..

I got like one millisecond of face time, which is great in my book... All the arial shots were mine as I was the only person on the balcony.. Great performance, sounded really tight on the recording too.. Editing was great, if you guys were wondering who the random girls are that are just sitting there, those shots are from daves camera at his staff.

Beastie Boys were great.

Dave's audience is horrid. I can't believe BBs can seem that into it when the audience isn't. I was impressed.

I'm officially over the handheld camera stuff. It still reminds me of the Bad Medicine video. :o

Sigur Ros on Conan any minute now. :) BBs need to go on Conan again.

It was AWESOME!! I'm glad they did the remix that they did and that MMM was there too! SWEET!
Anyone else notice the switch up on the words "fly" and "high?"
* rubs chin with index and thumb*
Oh and the audience looked like they all had a dose of thorazine..
I was at home happy and rockin' with ya..err.. although it's not live it's still pretty great.

Wow what a wonderful opportunity! I'm happy for you!
It's great to hear about it from someone who was there and participated in the show. I love hearing stories like this.
You're right that lady was pretty "zzzzzz."
Good Luck to you in the future :)

My bf is a local Dj and we were talking about MMM and a few other djz after the show. I'm not in the scene for scratch or anything like that. If it were not for the beasties I'd never have known about MMM.
MMM's influence brings good things to the music.

Here's my review. I fell asleep on my couch before Letterman even started. I woke up during whoever does the show after Letterman. That weird English or Scottish or Irish dude from the Drew Carey show. I am quite interested in when this will be replayed. Next time I definately have to do some speed to stay awake. Damn Damn Damn.

Chocowallet, I'm sure someone will have it scanned and on the internet by tommorow.

Shadbells, filming from the balcony was cool... I was right behind remmy and lyneday in the second row, by pure coincidence. I'm happy about it because I can easily tell which shots are mine.

For all the people that haven't been involved in the making of this but are excited to see the release of the film, I will give you this. The people involved in the film are fans, just like us. They love the beasties and have their concert memories or their memories involving listening to a beasties cd just like us. This is really a work of love, not some sort of commercial endeavor. From the producer down to the guys in charge of clearing the songs, they love the beasties just like you and I do.

I encourage you guys to see this film early and often when it is released. I promise you won't be dissappointed. Yauch, good talking to you sir and thank you for giving the fans the anthology dvd and now this movie.

I had to bother my parents to watch it since we have guests staying in my house and when it showed you I was like "hey I think that guy posts on the board" and it was strange and awkward.

Then my mom tried asking me what the song "So Watcha Want" is about and I had no explanation.

Anyway, nice job!!

Ponce De Leon
02-09-2006, 01:26 AM
Thanks for looking out for me! There is nothing wrong with "strange and akward" . This reminds of the premier, because the camera operators hadn't seen each other for nearly a year and a half. Before the movie was screened everyone at the bar inside tribeca cinemas were basically keeping to themselves. After it was over everyone came up to each other and talked like old friends. Its interesting how music can unite people like that. I think we can all take a page from that.

You just dont know Dave yet. The Beastie Boys love Dave, and vice versa. Dave shares the same crown that the Beastie Boys do. Look at the way the Beastie Boys shake Dave's hand, and vice versa. There is a lot of mutual respect. You may be a bit young, but you need to know that Dave is not boring, and Dave loves the Beastie Boys, and vice versa. So don't diss on Dave here. Please.

David Letterman has major respect for the Beastie Boys... David will drag it out for respect. Mike and Adam and Adam are good at coming across as real nice people. And that's not an act. They just rock and they're just real good folks.

I have to work at 5am so I went to bed @ 10pm last night with the alarm on my phone set for 1am. When I woke up and flipped on the tube they were in a commercial and I thought I'd missed it. Then they come back to dave w/ a Camera in his hand and out roll the BB's.

I thought it was dope how they started off with a bit of 3mc's. It struck me as an obvious nod to the skillz of MMM....a little bit of a "hey, our dj is a badass" type shout out. I can't help but think that RUN DMC influenced the BBs w/ the way they used to prop JMJ at all times.

So whatcha want was a great pick. MMM used multiple beats and the BBs mixed up the lyrics enough to make it nice and green.

Afterwards I tried to go back to sleep but it was tough.

It was appropriate to do the camera stuff with Letterman because he used to have the monkey cam and his dog bob's cam. And anything that draws attention to the movie is smart.

I was a Letterman fan in college (early 80s) but it's painful to watch now. He might be a better person but he's less interesting. With the size of the theater and his appeal to middle aged tourists from the midwest, it's a given that the audience is going to be lame.

P.S. I posted in the other thread on purpose! I wouldn't have mentioned my aversion to handheld concert footage in a thread created by a guy who helped shoot the movie. I've been careful not to do that. Makes me look shitty. Damn.

Whenever the Grammy's went to the commercial break, i must say that I got chills when David Lettermans commercial came on. "BEASTIE BOYS tonite!!" Everytime that part came on i smiled. My son (who digs Em/50cent) just looked over to me and shook his head....like i was his age.

I really enjoyed seeing the boys perform.

MMM :D is very talented. Which explains why he's a Beastie.

Adrock :p is ALWAYS ready to rock steady....
Mike D  in the place to be, so full of raw energy......
MCA  is here to stay no matter how much he gray.

I was rather disappointed in the crowd. I felt that they were'nt as worthy as you or I would have been. Other than that, thanks Dave....you are truly a fan.

Excellent Performance (y)

Adrock seemed a little confused on which verse MCA was doing though, which I found brilliant! (as in he added 'with topping' and 'no stopping' an MCA verse too early!)

edit: and great post above, it makes me smile seeing them 'still doin' it' so precisely, and having a real good time. I honestly think that's as good a tv appearence as there's ever been, and they seem to be loving it more than ever (y)

that was all edited in between taping and when it was aired... nice job J. Doran and Hornblower...

I really don't think there was much editing done. While they were performing I had one eye on the boys and one on the TV and for the most part, it looked the same. Ponce, I told you I saw you!! I think you can see the back of my head at one point too lol. I wanted to turn around and sing to the camera, but I didn't want to miss anything.

Good lookin' out, dave790! I watched and taped and re-watched the performance last night and this morning, but just watched it twice again here in the office with a co-worker. And I threw my mousepad and a pen and some Post-It Notes because I started getting hyped up again.

First I'd like to thank my mom for letting me use her as an excuse to get out of work earlier than I was supposed to so I was able to make it to the city early enough.

When I got to the theater around 2:30, Remy and Ponce were already there and there were about 20 or so people on line already. Since my brother couldn't make it Remy waited in line with me and we were going to try to get him in. Long story shot, as you already know, they let him in after one of the list guys checked with his supervisor. I don't know if it was the fact that I tried to tell everyone how important it was for us to see the show because we fuckin' shot that or that I kept telling the workers it was Remy's birthday (sorry if I embarrassed you at all, but something worked).

So we get our tickets and they write something on it and when we walk out the door the girl we had to meet goes "oh your one of my VIP's" I asked her what that entailed and she said we'd have the best seats in the house. When it was time to come back and line up as we were waiting to be seated in the theater, Remy and I are standing in a crowd and as I look around I’m saying in my head, wow we’re the youngest in this line by far. Something wasn’t right.

When they brought us into the lobby to prep us we were told that we would have the best seats in the house, so I’m automatically thing yes, front row finally. They guy goes “The first two rows of the balcony, no view obstructions”. I was hoping to be on the floor to maybe have the chance to get on camera if I was bopping around enough, but the view up there was awesome and like Pone said, Remy and I ended up sitting smack in front of him in the first row of the balcony which also happened to be dead center.
I asked the lady sitting next to me how she ended up with VIP tickets and they won them in a charity auction. A lot of people on line with us were out of towners and a bit older (no offense to anyone, but most were late 40’s and up). Anyways, we ended up speaking before the show started and I told her about the movie and she was either being really nice or was a bit interested in the whole concept. I noticed her clapping along and tapping her feet a bit during their performance.

It was funny that Dave and Paul had the cameras like Miramanee had said a few days ago. I was hoping that I wish Dave would say ‘the movie’s not this bad’ lol Dave was more into shooting his crew than the audience (which I guess was kind of hard to see with the lights and cameras in the way).

It would have been cool if the guys had those light sabers when they started in the triangle at the beginning.
I was so tempted to yell out Awesome or something since I was seated right in front of a mic, but I didn’t have the balls to carry it out =o/

After everyone filed out, I was standing in the lobby for a bit and one of the Letterman employees came out saying how phat it was to see the Beasties and Remy and I just kind of looked at each other and laughed then got to work "Well you know they have a movie coming out (he didn't) so we briefly explained how it was done and that it's being released on 3/31 but with a special showing on 3/23.

I had said to a few of the employees I wish that there could have been more fans there. I wish the balcony could have been people from the board and they would have showed our energy.

Then we went out to the stage door entrance and there were a few people standing there with stuff to be signed. Most of them had no clue about the film either, so we tried to fill them in and told them they should check in on the message board. (Someone really has to do something about putting a pop up page or SOMETHING on the front page to let people know. I honestly feel like the world outside of this board and people we speak with have NO clue about the movie.

Just watched the performance a few times on my home theater.. Mike D's first verse of so watcha want is redubbed, from a studio performance, other than that it was all live.. Lyneday, at least the back of your head made it on!

Mr. Juice
02-09-2006, 11:32 AM
My highlights of the performance:

Mike D wearing a sock cap (always love when they break 'em out).

MCA showing the beginning stages of a "billy goat" beard.

Adrock's lyric change, "Sweet Lou."

MMM, swithing up the beat after Fabolous' "Breathe." Those beats had some balls!

The Beastie Boys never cease to amaze me. They still freakin' got it!

Mr. Juice
02-09-2006, 11:37 AM
Ponce De Leon?

You say that Mike's first verse was a redub?

It makes sense now. I was at the taping and swore that I heard Mike reference Adrock's "Sweet Lou" line in his subsequent verse. When I watched later that night, I only caught one blast of "Sweet Lou."

Do you know why they did this?

"DONT BE AFFRAID TO BE YASELF". Seriously I have never had such a passion to people in my life.

I appreciated your comments! So sweet and sincere - would it be sexist of me to say "especially for a guy?" :p (you are a guy, keerect? :o ) For me too at some point they transcended simple entertainment to inspire the heck outta me. There's lots of talented entertainers out there but one in a million has the power to make you feel glad to be alive.

Thanks all for the reviews and the video. I missed the performance but I am excitedly off to check it out on youtube.

Mr Juice as I said , I got a chance to hangout with yauch in the sound studio after the performance and he listened to the recording mulitple times looking for every little nuance. Maybe MCA just felt that mikes verse wasn't tight enough and he wanted to make sure the performance was solid gold the whole way, but it was definitely redubbed. Notice they only show wide shots during that part.

BBoys are like, " Hey uncle Dave, we were just in the neigborhood and thought we could stop by and hang around for a while." Then Dave's all like, " Sure guys, you know you're always welcome!! I agree 100%. When I was talking to people outside after the show last nite, one of them said he was just ont he site and didn't see anything. I told him it's all over the boards.

But I'm sure if someone goes to just take a quick look at bb.com, they're not going to check each forum/thread.

If the front page isn't redone to incorporate the movie, it should at least be a splash/pop up. Same with Solid Gold Hits.. no wonder sales are so down, people don't KNOW about it.

Mmm, not so sure. When you can hear Yauch's voice and see that his lips aren't moving and the mic is nowhere near his mouth, it's pretty obvious that something's being forked with. Opens the Beasties up to charges of lip-synching, I think, and I really wish they hadn't futzed around with the re-dubbing.

Well according to Yauch...they've substituted quite a bit of AIFST with other concert audio and MMM beats.

Sure, there's something raw and cool about a "real bootleg"...and I have plenty and love 'em...but I'm glad they've put a lot of work into making the audio sound really tight for AIFST as well as the Letterman show. To me, it shows that Yauch is a stickler for detail and cares about the quality of the sound.

My favorite thing about the whole thing was seeing Letterman get into it. He seemed like he was digging the concept. It's unfortunate that his explanation of the film wasn't quite accurate. He referred to AIFST as a video, which kind of diminishes its magnitude. He did, however, correct his mistake as he introduced the band. It's also unfortunate that the band didn't get an opportunity to talk and clarify a few things. I wonder if an interview was planned and they ran out of time.

I asked afew of the Late Show employees as we were waiting to get into the theater if there was going to be an interview and they all said they think it's just a performance.

As for running out of time, these tapings are usually scripted and pretty on point.

It would have been nice to have them talk about it a bit, but maybe closer to the time of the theater release or dvd release they'll be on again (I can dream can't I). At least the theater release date was mentioned and hopefully it will be re-run closer to the time if they don't appear again since this show was on a bit later than normal due to the Grammy's and I'm sure most working people didn't stay up to watch it.

I just had a brain fart.. did Dave even mention that it was going to be on DVD also? If not that makes me think that they could be back in the early summer.

The quality is good but it's relatively quiet. I really appreciate that you shared this video and let me download it. (y)

Besides I didn't make the mp3 out of your version.

I'll try to do another one.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed this, but when Mike is about to get into the "illest muthafucka from here to Gardenia line," MMM cuts into a sample from the score to Kill Bill. It's significant because that noise is played throughout the movie wherever there's some element of danger. Putting it in just as Mike is about to use profanity is pretty witty stuff.

the beat in the end is how tt5b should've sounded

I love TT5B, but see what you're saying. There just seems to be a lot of potential if they were to go in that sort of direction beat-wise, but whatever...I'm happy with them making whatever beast they like however they like or returning to instruments etc

My next trick will be pulling some concerts out of a hat. Abracapocus! Hocus cadabra! Can you find some Quasar shows in that hat please?Hey, Horovitz was smokin' on Letterman, wasn't he? Yeah, but he's always smokin'!Some people don't know what they've got...Boy, you can say that again.I guess I should have been in the studio to tell them that they should have labeled the footage so viewers could distinguish between the cameras. You should be right by their side telling them everything Miramanee. You've, bar none, got some of the best ideas. It would've been cool for us on the board to see, for instance, the "Remy Cam". No one but us here would know that and it would be fun!My favorite thing about the whole thing was seeing Letterman get into it. You know, mine too. I watch Letterman almost every night. Dave's the best and I don't know if I was trippin or what but it sure seems like there's some mutual admiration between Dave and the Beastie Boys.I gleaned that he was calling Mike "Sweet Lou." Yeah, I felt it was Mike he called "Sweet Lou".

I guess I should have been in the studio to tell them that they should have labeled the footage so viewers could distinguish between the cameras. Camera 1 should have been Letterman, Camera 2 should have been Shaffer, Camera 3 should have been audience camera operator 1, etc. Viewers should have seen which footage was coming from a particular camera operator with labels. Not only would it have been interesting to know who was shooting what and how many people/cameras were involved, it also would have conveyed what a complex undertaking "Awesome, I Shot That!" (as Letterman called it) was.

I still hope they utilize this feature for the DVD release of Awesome I...Shot that

in all fairness, the night of the Letterman show it would have said "Ponce De Leon cam"

I wasnt upset that there wasnt an interview, I think Dave conveyed the concept of the film, and I think it was great that the entire program Wednesday night revolved around the DIY theme...

just the fact that he gave the audience and the viewers at home an idea of what happened in MSG on 10/9/04, "you can see it in a movie picture theater house" was good enough for me...

the crowd, although it was weak, was at least interested in the concept, and again, I believe this will be good for the release...

p.s. We ran into Alex after the show at the stage entrance and he said they will list each theater in the cities participating in the one-night release, he said it was something they were doing for the fans...

It's not from that film alone, it's an old sample from The Green Hornet I think. Nor is it RZA. By the same token, I'm not sure who it is, but check out the start of 30 minute massacre. It's on there.

I edited my shit, cause I believe the sample was played alone. And yeah, it was cool as.

It's from the theme song to "Ironsides" an old TV show with I think Raymond Burr in a wheelchair. The reason it was used in Kill Bill was it was an homage to it being used in 5 Fingers of Death aka King Boxer, an old kung fu flick. It was used there in similar situations as Kill Bill, with the screen going red and all that.

Ride around town like a Raymond Burr.
