I was at the Letterman taping yesterday and after watching the performance last night on TV, I realized why the Beastie Boys redubbed some of Mike D’s and MCA’s lines:

It all starts with Adrock switching his, “So Michael tell them all why,” to “Sweet Lou tell them why.”

Maybe a bit thrown off, or just simply trying to run with the ‘Sweet Lou’ line, Mike D accidentally begins the second verse, “Well you know I’m Sweet Lou and I’m a married man.” Since Mike D went into the second verse, MCA automatically kicks in with his second verse lyrics, “But like a dream I’m flowing without no stopping…”

Following the show I’m guessing the Beasties redubbed the correct lyrics, however, the proof in the pudding lays within Adrock’s backing vocals. If you listen to the song over again, even though the Beasties are on their first verse, you’ll hear Adrock coming in on “Metropolitician,” “stoppin’,” and “toppin’.” And if you listen really closely, the Beasties prematurely go into, “Well it’s WACK, when you’re JACKED, in the BACK of a RIDE.” Also, during MCA’s “ride and glide” re-dubbed lyrics, you’ll notice that the microphone is no where near his mouth.

The only reason I bring this up, is because I thought I was going crazy when I viewed the televised performance last night. I thought, “Why does this seem a bit different?” In defense of the Beasties, even though they repeated some of their lyrics, their live performance had an amazing vibe. I almost wish they would have kept the original vocals. Their imperfections are what makes them so special!

As you can see, it’s a very boring day at work—hence me breaking down the game footage like this.

While I really dislike Fabolous, and the lyrics on the track, "Breathe" has a great beat, and it was a treat to hear it in the background of one of my favorite Beastie Boys songs.

I believe you're absolutely correct on this one. I hadn't thought about all that, I did say in the toher thread though that I'd noticed Adrock seemingly playing the wrong MCA verse in his head!

Then I was thinking about that and it just didn't seem like an easy mistake to make...then I read about the dubbing thing in the other thread and was close to putting 2 and 2 together...but you've done an excellent job of pointing it out.

Either way, it's a good performance to say the least, and hey at least you got to witness something everyone else didn't see. I also agree about the mess up's making it more special, I love them, but you've no need to convince me of the vibe. They looked off the hook (y)

I like it when they change it up a little, it gives a whole new feeling to the song

Mr. Juice is correct.

I thought I saw the mismatched lyrics/sound/lip motion...but haven't had the chance to check it out on tape since watching it live.

Mr. Juice is on the inside..... ;)
