John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) has hit out at Green Day calling them "plonk" and accusing them of stealing the term 'punk'.

The former Sex Pistols front man says the US trio are a watered down version of the true punk ethos according to contactmusic.

He said: "Don't try and tell me Green Day are punk. They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phony."

He added on the subject of the Sex Pistols battle with the establishment: "The government's against you, the police are on you. So there we are fending off all that and it pisses me off that years later a wank outfit like Green Day hop in and nick all that and attach it to themselves.”

"They didn't earn their wings to do that and if they were true punk they wouldn't look anything like they do."

The Pistols had some questionable punk credentials, too. Really, who hasn't?

While Green Day is definitely overrated, they don't seem deserving of the scorn that gets heaped on them. Leave that to Good Charlotte.

And as DS pointed out, the Sex Pistols had a questionable origin. I think they were a lot like The Monkees--except they were calculated to shock rather than charm.

I'll admit; I own American Idiot and thoroughly ENJOY it. But, I am very much embarrassed admitting this to the public (offline).

Dunno.. Twelvies sporting the American Idiot album art across their chests irks me. What's worse are the American Idiot wrist bands I spotted today in Spencer's. Sell out much?

As for the Sex Pistols, YES, they had a questionable origin. I was one to thrash upon them years back, until getting into The Clash (heh, heh). Now I sort of dig their stuff. It's vintage.

As far as music goes I like the Sex Pistols a trillion billion times more than Green Day.

But really now, isn't it a bit trite to harp on them, I say compliment Green Day on their commercial success. They have a swell business going.

I dunno. PiL had two or three good albums, but then they degenerated into the bad 80's dance scene and became faceless. And the Pistols had maybe one good song and a bunch of shock value and designer clothes. so, you could say Green Day are more punk than the pistols, because they actually formed their own band and foraged a career based on substance over image. but actually typing the words "y is more punk than x" makes my fingers hurt.

"disapointed" is 80's dance in a bad, bad way.

I agree with you on the "unappreciated in their time" sentament. One of my favorite albums is The Cure's "Seventeen Seconds", and that albums was almost universially panned as being inpenatrable and unfeeling. the first three PiL albums are amazing, but I don't attribute that exclusively to Lydon, nor anything he's done do I attribute solely to him, as he seems to do often.

Really? I always find him giving equal credit to bandmates for whatever song and whatever album. He got it so the other Pistols got their share in profits, which would never of happened if he hadn't brought McLaren to court.

I find that he repeadedly puts down Wobble in the press, and says that the Public Image limited albums were mostly, if not all, his creation. I've only once heard him give anyone any credit, and it was almost forced from him.

The walking contradiction comment was to tie-in with the Green Dayness as they have a song called Walking Contradiction which is pretty tight.

Anyway, punk died with Refused.

Everyone knows punk was from the middle classes. University students trying to rebel against their backgrounds. The same went for hippies.

It was the mods and the teddies that were from the working classes. They were trying to look good rather than tatty.

I think it's fitting to quote Jawbreaker's "Boxcar" here:

You're not punk,
and I'm telling everyone.
Save your breath,
I never was one.
You don't know what I'm all about.
Like killing cops and reading Kerouac.
My enemies are all too familiar.
They're the ones who used to call me friend.
I'm coloring outside your guidelines.
I was passing out when you were passing out your rules.
One, two, three, four.
Who's punk? What's the score?
Got a friend.
Her name is Boxcar.
Cigarettes and beer in El Sob.
Her hair was blue,
Now it's green.
I like her mind.
She hates the scene.
You're on your own.
You're all alone.

It's true. Whether he's right or wrong about any given opinion, I'm not all that interested in hearing who he hates, especially since it's apparently everyone in the world (Steve Albini is similar that way, but he seems to be more entertaining about that). When it comes to bands I like, I much prefer hearing about something they admire, if they're inclined to spout off opinions endlessly.

I just scanned thru the Grammy's I recorded the other night and I saw that Green Day won a Grammy for "Record of the Year" for 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams' which seemed semi-reasonable considering the competition in the category.

But as far as "Punk", Bruce Springsteen's Devils and Dust performance was more "Punk" than any of their schtick, plus he added a nice holla of "Bring 'em Home" after his song. He took advantage of his moment.

While Green Days handlers yelled "Green Day Rules" when they accepted the Record of the Year award.

I don't know about Johnny Rotten, but I know about me....I give plenty of bands a tip of my hat....something about Green Day just bugs the shit out of me. Can't stand 'em.

When he does interviews (especially recently to promote Mega Bugs, his Best of John Lydon CD and DVD collection, and upcoming album), people ask for his opinion on bands like Green Day, Rancid and all those other "punk" bands. It's normal. He just tells his opinion. It's not like he hires people to give interviews so he can go and bash these bands. It's just a number of small questions that come up.

He does quite a lot now. Just turning 50, he guest stars on a radio station in California (where he lives), working and finishing up his new solo album, toying with the idea of a Sex Pistols final reunion in Japan, writing a new book (this time focusing on his PiL years), doing tv shows (a recent one for Berlin TV about Britain...it was a short series with some other guy as co-host), helping out charities, getting a number of awards lately, and so much more. It's not like he sits around doing nothing. He's quite an active person.

For his "rotten" attitude...blame the nuns at a Catholic school.

He was in a skate video called 'Sorry'. He did the intros for each of the skaters, and guess what? He put them down. It's just a routine for him to cash in on.

How punk rock is that?
