Have you seen that short lived show Undeclared that he did? I never saw it but its out on DVD now (or soon) and am wondering if its worth a rental.

Steve Carell is making a sequel to Bruce Almighty entitled 'Evan Almighty' starring his character from the first one.

*disappointed sigh*

I haven't seen it either. Can you watch it for me too? Please? I also like to have a cherry coke, kit kat, and popcorn when I watch a movie, if could throw that in, that would be a major bonus.

what a fatty

So Netflix only had the "unrated" version, and I didn't notice. I waited and waited for it and it finally came. I've tried watching it, but it's waaaay too long for a comedy. I can't stand extended versions. I've heard that the theatrical version was much better. I guess I'll never know.

anchorman is also super good.

the ending wasn't great!? that was fuckin' stupidly pointless! they shoulda just ended it after the whole "1 minute later" thing. (y)

but yeah, pretty good movie.. i woulda said it dragged on but i'm glad it didn't just fly through the movie like all comedies do.

The unrated version was 2 hour 15 minutes. I wonder how long the theatrical version was? Parts of it were funny, but it needed serious editing.

Docu,

It seems the unrated version added nearly 20 minutes to the movie. I wonder what they included? I'm not necessarily into the phenomenon of "unrated" versions of comedies. What they initially cut out of the movie they did so for a reason...

actually, i don't think the there was really anything extra in the movie itself.

i saw the movie in in the theatre and on the unrated DVD....i didn't notice any extra scenes.

the label "unrated" is being used rather freely nowadays.

it doesn't necessarily mean more swearing or more boobs...it could just mean extra footage (like a directors cut).
and may not even mean that.
sometimes, the "unrated" part refers to the DVD extras...which don't have to go through screen ratings. now, distributors aren't required to put "unrated" on the DVD in that case...but they do so for marketing reasons....
that's the new trend now...put out a "unrated" version so people think they're getting more tits and swearing.

and that movie was not too long.
and it made ALOT of people BEST MOVIE of the YEAR lists, believe it or not.
including some Academy voters...

I listened to a tiny bit of the commentary (which maybe better than the movie) and they mentioned which scenes were added to the theatrical run, so I'm pretty sure that the version I saw had quite a few extra scenes, and it did take 2:15 to watch. I had heard that this version sucked before I rented it, but it was the only version on Netflix (and apparently the only wide screen version available at all) and I wasn't paying close enough attention. Alas.

I heard that the unrated version sucked from people who adored the movie in theaters, btw, so I'm willing to believe that the theatrical version was terrific. I thought all the actors were fine.

i really have no idea what scenes they are then.
they obviously weren't apparent enough to stick out...
so anyone saying that editing in the theatrical version was so differant that it produced a totally differant viewing experiance than the DVD... is full of shit.
don't believe the hype.

and that's that.

Well, if you didn't notice 15-20 extra minutes and enjoyed it as much, that's fine. I don't think it was extra boobs for the most part -- I think it was extra talking between the male characters for the most part, which slowed the movie down. I guess that much of the bits between the guys were ad libbed and they wanted to give the comedians more screen time.

I've had director's cuts ruin movies that I loved (Aliens) but also improve the movie (Almost Famous). I just wish that when they do the extras, they give you the option of watching the theatrical version instead. Even super low buck DVDs often do that.

On a related note, I rented another DVD that unbeknownst to me had Mr. Will Ferrell in a small part. I wouldn't have rented that movie if I had known. So it was a shitty weekend for Netflix and me. I don't hate Mr. Ferrell nearly as much as Robin Williams or Martin Short, but he's getting there.

What?!?!?! the directors cut was ACE!
that's one of my favorite movies of all time...and that extra footage gave important detail in the early stages of the moon base's infestation....and more screen time for Ripley and Newt bonding....AND the suspensful "robot guns" scene...
you're crazy, Doc...

Ah, I do have excellent taste in movies, and I pretty much always have. :)

The extra scenes with nothing really happening added to my enjoyment of Almost Famous because the point of the movie for me was spending time with the characters and I liked the characters. I'll never know with 40 Year Old Virgin because I didn't get to see the shorter version, but I laughed out loud in some spots as it was -- it's just that I kept wondering when it would end as well.

the Aliens DVD i have gives both options.
Mine doesn't. And I bought the stupid thing not realizing it! My T2 gives me the choice of watching the original.

The original Aliens movie was about as perfect as a big budget action movie can be. The added scenes ruined the suspense. It's scarier to not understand exactly what's happened before you got there (it also puts you in the shoes of the characters exploring the base who don't know what in the hell they're seeing). Good movies sometimes let the viewer fill in missing parts and speculate.
