I love that stuff made with spinach and cheese and filo dough; I can't remember what it is called though (y)
Many moons ago when I was at university I had a boyfriend from Greece and we used to go to Astoria in Queens NY where there's a big Greek community and eat at lovely little Greek cafes. Lovely food, even though I can't remember what most of it's called. Although one time at Orthodox Easter he gave me sheep brain to eat but didn't tell me what it was, I wasn't so keen on that even before I knew.

greek is god
spanikopita is the spinach dish
I adore a version of that except it has slab of salmon inside and it is cooked with grilled veggies and feta while wrapped in the philo dough
and type of chicken dish is always a keeper
greek lamb is the only way to eat it
greek lemony ribs are so so so sosososoossooso good
and from may-october I pretty much eat nothing but greek salad
goddamn I make a good at home version

the spinnach and cheese thing is spanacotiropita, very yummy (y)
and the lamb brain around orthodox easter was probly part of the magiritsa which is a soup made with lambs intestines/brains etc.

I have to get this off my chest: I've always hated lamb.
Every easter, we roast a lamb on the spit, but it's some machine used to cook the lamb. In Greece, they would kill the lamb themselves, then cook it over the spit. One time when I visited, my grandfather killed a baby lamb early in the morning, and I could hear it screaming...sounded just like a child crying. Quite sad.
My mom cooks Greek pita all the time, and when I mean pita, it's not pita bread, like the type they put gyro meat in, but it's made in various kinds of vegetables. There is pita made with onions, pumpkin, and another kind of vegetable which I am not sure what it's called in english, but in Romanian, it's pronounced as "praush". (accent on the r)
And yeah, spanikopita is good. So is Greek lasagna.
yeah i love the vegetable pita its really nice, yeah we dont kill it ourselves we go to the butcher, cant stand the thought of the poor thing strugling etc.to sad :( . but yea nah lamb tastes too good.
