well technically AIDS is just a syndrome. hiv is the virus. and the virus itself doesn't actually kill you. it could be something as common as a cold or flu that gets you and your system is so weakened you go kaput.

HIV is the virus, AIDS is the syndrome when your T-Cell count drops dramatically due to immunodepression thru opportunistic infections or poor lifestyle choices.

The minor infections your body would otherwise normally conquer or get under control are not able to be controlled. No one ever says "he died from an opportunistic infection of the CMV virus" because maybe 1 out of 1000 people would know what you're talking about...they say "due to complications from AIDS".
